Reasons why we ship them
Because Allen Leech is the captain of the ship!
Because they are steadfast in their love
Because they defended their love to all those against them and won
Because they are confident in their love for one another
Because their love is based in friendship that has built up over many years
Because he couldn't help overhearing that she was interested in Women's rights
Because he looked through the window to see her new frock
Because she was grateful for the pamphlets
Because he brought her pamphlets to read
Because she hopes that he does go into politics
Because she doesn't want him to go to prison
Because she is glad he won't die or go to prison
Because he is her ticket
Because he knows that she loves him
Because she knows he'll make something of himself
Because he will stay at Downton until she wants to run away
Because she knows when he's angry and troubled
Because she stood up for him against her father
Because he was more scared she was hurt than at the prospect of losing his job
Because they held hands so naturally
Because she is always goes to the garage to seek him out
Because he has promised to devote every waking moment to her happiness
Because she touched his cheek
Because she wants to know if he will wait a bit longer
Because he would wait forever for her
Because he is always staring at her when no one is looking
Because he smiled when he saw her in the kitchen baking
Because he knows she is enjoying her work as a nurse
Because they can discuss things as equals
Because he touched her waist and she felt the connection
Because she is willing to give up her entire world to be with him
Because all that matters is that they love each other
Because she wanted to know why he made a promise to Carson and not to her
Because she said "us" and didn't deny it
Because she has feelings even though she's good at hiding them
Because he has waited all this time and still can't believe she said yes
Because she said he could kiss her
Because all he wants to do is kiss her
Because he slept on the chair and gave her the bed
Because he can pay his own way
Because she gave him her heart
Because she will be true to him
Because she has decided she is going to marry Tom!
Because all he wants is to make her happy
Because of the passion for their beliefs and each other.
Because convention is merely a hurdle to be overcome rather than an insurmountable barrier to their hopes and desires
Because he said she looked "very fine" and she didn't mind him checking her out
Because she wondered where he had been all day
Because they have their own theme music!
Because she told her father that if he was fired she would run away
Because he offered to teach her how an engine works
Because he said it was up to her
Because it cost him all he had to say those things to her
Because if she didn't care she would have told on him all those months ago
Because he's frightfully full of himself!
Because he risked a broken heart and didn't care a damn for his job, as he loved her
Because if Granny says Sybil's husband will tell her what her opinions are, then she must marry a man who shares the same opinions!
Because they are a modern love story
Because she knows her own mind
Because he wants to make her happy more than anything else in the world
Because she won't give him up!
Because he knows she'll come the moment he calls
Because even Granny admits he has many virtues
Because of the way she said "and then we will marry"
Because they were the only two people smiling and happy at the funeral
Because her father gave them his blessing in the end
Because he shook her father's hand
Because they walked into their future hand and hand
Because instead of saying Sybil/Branson, we can all say Sybil Branson
Because even Cora started to shipping them after the news she was gonna be a granny
Because "Ireland 2-Downton 0"
Because Branson would always choose Love against Political Activism
Because Allen wants Tom to say "Sybil, le permite desnudarse"
Because the new Chauffer Robert hired is old and ugly
Because they're married
Because there is a baby on the way!

Remember when we discussed the "Don't disappoint me" line? (That seems so forever ago.)

I wasn't off when I said this could be trouble to American television critics. Here's Salon's take on it:

Quote:

The other major proponent of change is, as ever, Tom Branson, who is so forward-thinking he gets Ruffied, like he’s actually a character on “Law & Order.” Last year, Tom exhibited a horrid know-it-all-ness toward his true love Sybil, constantly explaining that he knew her mind before she did, a little romantic, a lot condescending. This tendency was again on display this episode. After spending all of dinner fighting with her family about Ireland and the future, he tells her, “Don’t disappoint me Sybil, not now that we’re here.” Cuts both ways, Tommy boy! We’ll see if “Downton” knows how to take a forward-thinking young man, and turn him into a traditionalist.
“Downton Abbey” recap: A change is gonna come - Salon.com

Sadly, they were right with the last line. :(

Patano 01-07-2013 07:45 AM

I don't feel like discussing Tom hate, especially coming from people who clearly don't understand him, Sybil and the S/T dynamic at all. They display such a simplified view of what was happening in the 2nd season. They completely don't understand the nuances of their relationship - it hurts. I see no wrong in this line and I couldn't care less about those people. Plus, IMO Tom was very polite and patient in the dinner scene. Violet and Robert were rude, while Isobel and Matthew well-intentioned, but tactless and asking stupid questions. "Cuts both ways" - are watching the same show? Tom stays at a place where he is constantly patronized and attacked from many sides. But he bears it all with grace and politeness for Sybil's sake. Plus, he even saves her family's wedding of the century. He has every right to stay true to himself (khem.. khem). I'm sure that soon the same people will attack him for abandoning his beliefs.

Because it's how these recaps works. A bunch of people try to be sarcastic and cynical, while taking lines and scenes out of context and having a very superficial view of characters and their actions. Worst thing is that they think that they're funny.

Wonder whether they criticized Mary for calling Matt "disappointing" only because he does not want to compromise his beliefs to give money to her daddy (and the daddy lost money because of his own sheer stupidity)?

But yes, the sad thing is that they're 100% right when it comes to the last sentence in this otherwise pile of nonsense :(

That was such a huge double standard about the "disappointing" line. Selfish, cold Mary gets away with everything because people find her fascinating.

I just went on a big rant on TWoP about how sick I am of giving Mary the benefit of the doubt. She acts nice for one episode, then goes back to being a snobby cow. So one poster said that Mary was awful in 3.01 and I not only agreed with her, I finally laid out what I really think of Mary and how tired I am of being told she's really a great person deep down.

Sorry not sorry. I do feel badly about her losing her husband, but not nearly as much as I did for Tom. Mary didn't sacrifice anything for Matthew: she got him plus the house and everything else she wanted. And when people bemoan the fact that she will never get to be Countess, I saw "BOO EFFING HOO."

Mary still has her home and family and country. Tom lost everything. Cry me a river, Lady Mary.

I don't think Tom would ever get with Mary. Why would he, when he had her sister who is a hundred times better in every way? But if he does, I will stop liking him, respecting him, or caring about him.

Remember the Free Bates campaign? Can we have a Give Branson Back his Balls campaign? Please?

BTW Scarlet, thanks for the thread. Although for a title I would prefer: "I'm still the same man inside." Or "I will always be an Irish Mick at heart."

I'm curious what Americans will feel about Mary after 3x02. IMO she was at her worst in this episode. Not to mention her patronizing comments about Americans.

Can anyone help me with a good link to the CS? I found one earlier but can't seem to locate it again. I'd like to rewatch a few parts.

If sure there are, but its uncommon. My fiance and I have been together for 4 years.... I still have the honeymoon sex all day every day mentality, where his flame has simmered down a little bit.

Andorra 01-08-2013 01:41 PM

Patano,
they already watched 3.02. 3.01 was aired together with 3.02 as I understand.

Were they disappointed with Mary? Not so much. As far as I saw it they are mostly still gushing about the "perfect love" of Mary and Matthew.

And still saying Tom should shut up, he's in the Crawley's house so he should behave and dress like they want, Sybil doesn't really love him and he's a patronizing wanna be revolutionary who treats her like a child and wants her to be like he wants her to be.

I also wrote that I was a little bit angry about Sybil smiling about the Dowager's remark that they should invite the servants. I thought that wasn't nice because it was behind Tom's back and he was probably sitting upstairs being unhappy.

But no, that was obviously just funny and perfectly fine.

And it was absolutely okay from Sybil to demand from Tom not to talk about Ireland even if it was her family who started the discussion. He should just shut up and "hold his head down".

So the "disappoint" line was just awful in their opinion, because he is the only one who is in the wrong.

And their kiss and making up is just pretence. In reality they're a dysfunctional marriage.

Aaaaahrg! Sorry

I really must watch a different show with different characters!

Patano 01-08-2013 02:00 PM

I'm also angry that Violet so often gets away with everything. People just have it programmed that everything she says is "funny", though sometimes it is only rude and nothing more.

I don't know in what definition of marriage those people believe. In M/M marriage there were pointless disagreements all the time and they always ended with Mary getting what she wanted.

S/T were the only couple who always expressed and respected their differences and then always reached a compromise. Plus, their differences of opinion were always quickly solved and followed by kisses etc. It was an example of an EXTREMELY healthy and mature marriage. The most mature and most healthy one on this show.

Plus, IMO Mary and Matthew are incredibly cold in public. But then, some people claim that S/T are immature with their PDA, while M/M so dignified with their public restraint.

But I don't really want to discuss/be bothered with this. In other circumstances maybe I would be bothered, but as it is, I'm just not interested at all in what those people say. I have enough reasons for sadness.

I think that we dwelled too much on haters when he had so much to cherish. Now, when we have nothing, I'm even less willing to think about them :(.

ETA:
I know that it's not in good tone to speak bad about the dead, but Matthew really pissed me off with his recruiting Robert for Sinn Fein comment when HE started this topic during dinner. Really, Matthew.

But I think that Sybil meant not mentioning Ireland in general, not during that dinner. She wanted more to give Tom a tip for the future, not reproaching him for the dinner scene when she looked really pissed with her family if you ask me. Whatever, when I get to it, I will perhaps write an analysis of that bedroom scene in 3x01. Now I'm stuck at 2x02 and it's difficult to move forward. For me this bedroom scene perfectly shows how well S/T communicate without too many words and how well they know each other and are open to one anoher's POVs.

HarshBench 01-08-2013 06:31 PM

Well, it doesn't matter now, does it? By the end of the season Matthew will be dead and there will be no more M/M either. And both couples will be left with a vision of "perfect love" that ended with the birth of a baby.

Remember, attitudes toward Tom changed a lot after 3.05. Shame it had to be that way, but it is. Just like people thought Mary was horrible until something bad happened to her. No better way to get viewers to like a character than drumming up sympathy.

And whether they like it or not, next season Tom will be the main male upstairs aside from Robert and maybe Edith's guy. And he will act circles around Dan and look better shirtless and generally be awesome.

Sorry, I know not everyone will be watching next season but I will just for Tom. And all the hate Dan is getting (as opposed to Jessica who got almost none and was just sorely missed) is giving me tremendous schadenfreude.

And Baby Sybil is so much cuter than baby Crawley. I mean I am sure they will find a cute baby to play him later but come on, he can't be as cute as Baby Sybil.

Someone said this a few months ago: We have different ships, but we are all floating on the same ocean of pain. Well, I didn't buy it at the time, but I do now.

We all lost our OTP. Tom has haters, but Dan has just as many and it is certainly impacting the rear-view opinion of his character.

As for the US audience, I wouldn't mind them. The ones I know just watch for the costumes and Maggie's one-liners. My sister was the one who introduced me to the show, and she said the ONLY character she likes is Violet. She is a regular watcher but she doesn't even remember the names of half the characters or care.

We all know our couple was the best, and our fic writers are unparalleled.

I'm actually shocked by all the Dan hate. As I said earlier, I understand that they may be pissed with his behaviour/comments, but putting sole blame for Matthew's death on Dan? I say - blame JF's greed.

Ditto!
