Thanks for the new thread! I'm excited about the upcoming start of our rewatch. As we're talking about other characters as well - in our case mostly in context of their relation to S/T - it will be interesting to look back and pick up things we've missed. For example, I'm looking forward to observe Violet better after the discussion about her (possible) history.

I'm also interested in observing Sybil before Tom arrives on the scene... I plan on breaking out the Blu-Ray on Sunday and watching then BTW - if anyone wants any updates/changes/additions to the OP just let me know! |

I keep watching all the Tom/Sybil scenes from S1/S2 in a loop and I assume the effect will be greater when I will bother to remember that there are other storylines in DA - and I keep being amazed at how much Sybil had changed and matured from the beginning. I don't think I realized it when I was just watching every week, but you can really see how she grew up from a young girl (I didn't remember her appearing that young after I initially watched S1, but watching back, it's obvious that she is) to a grown woman. And I have the embarrassing tendency of going all mushy in their early scenes, where she is being all youthful and excited about little things and he's obviously taken by her, and thinking "ooh! he doesn't really know it yet, but in a few years she's going to be his wife!" I also wonder - we keep talking about how much subtext there is in the S/T scenes. Is there the same amount of subtext also in the scenes we haven't re-watched that many times? I know a lot of people complain about JF's writing this series, but I feel like it's the sort of thing where people see the little that is flawed and not the better part, which is done well. He managed to write storylines that have many layers and characters that the more you re-watch them the more you realize about them. That takes some serious good writing. Re the OP: I am thinking maybe the other banner I made - the white one - should be the header, and not the green one? Although I think I should update it first and make a version that will include ep8? And in the reasons, it still says that "he is her ticket". Can someone with the DVD check the subtitles and decide once and for all of it's "you have my ticket" or "you are my ticket"? (And also: I think it's "losing his job", not "loosing his job"). __________________

Gosh! Such a lot to comment/reply on/to! I'm off out for the day now, so I can't give you all the responses you deserve at the moment. I'll have a think on it and see you all later!

The DVD subtitles say "You are my ticket". I think it's funny how many people make such a big deal of it and others think it's the most romantic line between the two
The OP says 7th instead of 9th thread but that's all I've noticed. I agree about using the header Shi suggested! You can use the last art I made too if you like, I don't mind either way. |

TFTNT! Brain was too tired to write yesterday, so I took a short break and we're on to another thread. My we can be chatty.
Count me in on being an AoGG fan. I live in Canada, so it's sort of obligatory to read and love Anne. lol. We went to PEI for our honeymoon and it's a huge cottage industry. Everything on the Island seems to be Anne, Anne, Anne. I've also visited the home in Ontario where L.M. Montgomery lived after she was married. It's nowhere near as touristy as PEI though. It's just a plaque stating it's her home and there were pamphlet's for you to take. I imagine that when my daughter gets a little older, I'll be reading Anne again. Don't know if any of you are familiar with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). It's a personality categorization based on Carl Jung's Psychological Types that has 16 types to help you understand what motivates people and characters because of their preference of one or the other in each of four categories. Anyway, i've read a lot about it over the years and I like to apply it to people I know and characters that I love to give me a better understanding of what makes them tick. (FWIW, I'm an ISTJ and we like to organize people into these types of buckets. lol) Anyway, I came across the following description and thought it applied nicely to Sybil: ISFJ Quiet, friendly, responsible, and conscientious. Committed and steady in meeting their obligations. Thorough, painstaking, and accurate. Loyal, considerate, notice and remember specifics about people who are important to them, concerned with how others feel. Strive to create an orderly and harmonious environment at work and at home. MBTI also categorizes likely professions that someone who is that type is suited for and not surprisingly, nursing is one of them. You may wonder how this personality type would fit into women's rights, but remember, she felt that women should have rights but she didn't do much more than help Gwen with her search for a job until Tom came along and gave her pamphlets and opened her world. This also explains how she stays out of frays between Mary and Edith and why she doesn't want to hurt her parents by running away, which was Tom's idea to begin with. Also, it took her years to come to her decision, so it was something she had to fight her own personality to get to. I've also been looking out for what Tom's personality is categorized as and can't decide if he's an ENTP or an ENTJ. ENTP Quick, ingenious, stimulating, alert, and outspoken. Resourceful in solving new and challenging problems. Adept at generating conceptual possibilities and then analyzing them strategically. Good at reading other people. Bored by routine, will seldom do the same thing the same way, apt to turn to one new interest after another. ENTJ Frank, decisive, assume leadership readily. Quickly see illogical and inefficient procedures and policies, develop and implement comprehensive systems to solve organizational problems. Enjoy long-term planning and goal setting. Usually well informed, well read, enjoy expanding their knowledge and passing it on to others. Forceful in presenting their ideas. I figured that he's an E (Extravert) because it's he who starts the conversation with Sybil in the car and he also likes to spend time in the Servants Hall rather than in his own cottage (as Taylor, the old chauffeur, liked to do). I also figured that he's an N (iNtuitive) because he said, "it all comes down to whether you love me or not. That's all. That's it. The rest is detail." A classic N sentence because the big idea triumphs over details. That conversation also illustrates why Sybil is an S (Sensing), who wants to know about the detail like his family, her family. He's a T because well 75% of men are Thinking types, but also because he seems to make decision based on logic rather than feelings. He's a socialist because he thinks that it's what's right and what's fair, not how things should be because of people's feelings and comfort. What I can't figure out is whether he's Perceiving or Judging. Js tend to be more organized where as Ps are more spur of the moment. The long term goal of getting Sybil to run away with him is a J type of thing, where as the protest soup is more of a P type of thing. Seems like he's almost a combination of the two. Thoughts? Shi_fs - yes I think we should use your banner, so just PM me the link to an updated version and I'll add it! do you want me to keep the green art below, or can I remove it? made the typo changes, and re-watched that scene where she says "you're my ticket"...
ScarletCourt - I'm very familiar with Myers-Briggs, having taken the test before and am also an ISTJ it's really fascinating when you start thinking about people and their personalities! I love how you broke down Tom's personality, and I think that he would ENTP just because he tends to do things without thinking about them or the consequences (you could even say he did that from the very beginning handing her those pamphlets and talking with her, when he shouldn't have)... so if you think about it, they really are perfect for each other! My parents honeymooned at PEI(mom was a Anne fan as well) and back then in the 1960s it was still rural and pretty unspoiled. Sounds like it's become more touristy in the interim.
There's a lovely video of Dan Stevens reading "In Flanders Fields" at Trafalger Square yesterday over on YouTube. Lovely and a nice tie in and advertisement for Downton Abbey. For the Christmas special, a portion must take place in London since this is where Bates trial should be-so perhaps we'll see more of Rosamund and the Grantham's London Townhouse. I'm assuming Anna would want to be closer to Bates and i'm sure Mary would take her there. I know their marriage is supposed to be secret but wouldn't Robert have an inkling since in the first episode Bates told him of Anna and was allowed to live in one of the cottages when they married? Or perhaps he forgot in the intervening years? I just hope that in Series 3 there's more lightheartedness and smiles. i don't think anyone cracked a smile all series, Tom, especially. i miss some fun. |

Well, Tom did smile a few times - when she said "us", when she told him he was her ticket, and you will need slow-mo for this, but in the living room scene when she says they will get married and looks at him, he smiles too, but only for a split second. #IAmNotReallyThatObsessiveIJustKnowBecauseIWasMakingScreencaps. Speaking of which, Sav - I will make an updated version of the banner later today - I'll probably attempt more art at some point, maybe even try to rescue that ugly thing I posted a few days ago and everyone had the sense to not comment on - but I think the banner probably suits the top of the OP better than the other thing I made. __________________

Shi - I hope that you add the cemetery scene to the banner. Sybil looked so happy with her decision there. SavannahHershey - ISTJ's unite. I think you might be right about Tom being more of a P than a J, but S1 saw him being more the cautious one than Sybil which is where I thought he was more of a J than a P. S2 has him being more damn the consequences type of guy. Will know more once I start doing the rewatch. |
