I'm not sure the WB can fix their "Smallville problem". That show has changed its tone a little, at least for the first few episodes. It's considerably "darker" than it was in its first two seasons. Ironically, that makes the show an almost ideal fit with AtS but they may have lost the "Dawson's Creek" crowd who tuned in just to watch Clark and Lana make googly eyes at each other.

"Smallville"'s ratings are still good - but they aren't running neck and neck with "Seventh Heaven" any more. I hope the WB decides to be happy with that and leave well enough alone.

There's no point worrying about counterprogramming on other networks. The other guys are going to do whatever they can to steal your viewers, that's how the business works. AtS is better equipped than most shows to survive that, because when all is said and done it has a ferociously loyal core audience that's going to tune in and watch no matter what else is on.

From www.comicscontinuum

"The WB Wednesday lineup of Smallville and Angel combined to give the network it's best ratings of the season in several demographics with last Wednesday's episode."

See the specific demos at the sight.

Also from Futon Critic it says that
Hellbound got a 3.2/5
I believe Unleashed got a 3.1

Not to sure about posting links here so if it's not allowed tell me and I'll edit my post.

According to mediaweek and zap2it.com they have reported that angel got a 4.4 for hellbound. not 3.2 there's no way they got that low especially on a new episode. I think the 4.4 is the right one. The futon critic is probably off by a bit.

The 3.2 is the preliminary final rating while the 4.4 is the overnight. Mediaweek reported the final ratings for both Smallville and Angel. While Smallville's viewers went up versus last week's episode, Angel lost viewers versus last week's episode.

WB

8:00 p.m. Smallville
HH: 4.4/ 7 (#5), Viewers: 6.92 million (#5),
A18-49: 2.9/ 8 (#3)

9:00 p.m. Angel
HH: 3.1/ 5 (#5), Viewers: 4.73 million (#5),
A18-49: 2.3/ 6 (#5)

You're right, both show hit season highs in the demographics, but Angel's final numbers were still down versus last week. So the episode came with both good and bad news.

I don't think they came down that much. Plus it was competing against the game, which IMO was an even greater accomplishment.

They haven't really been dropping every week. Maybe in comparison to Smallville's numbers. But if this is true...

5.01 - Conviction 4.4/7
5.02 - Just Rewards 4.7/7
5.03 - Unleashed 4.2/6
5.04 - Hell Bound 4.4/6

Then its stayed pretty much the same. Except for the 4.2 which was I *think* up against a game 6 or 7 of the Cubs playoffs.

Which rating really matter? Because there is two different ratings for one episode. Overnight ratings?

I'm sorry, I don't know much about ratings.

The overnight ratings don't matter. They are there just to give an idea on what the final number may be. The final numbers are what truly matter.
