About the Series

At once deeply observed and intriguingly elusive, THE AFFAIR explores the emotional effects of an extramarital relationship. Noah is a New York City schoolteacher and novelist who is happily married, but resents his dependence on his wealthy father-in-law. Alison is a young waitress trying to piece her life and marriage back together in the wake of a tragedy. Set in Montauk at the end of Long Island, the provocative drama unfolds separately from both the male and female perspectives, using the distinct memory biases of both to tell the story.

Thanks for the new thread ;)

I post my last two comments

Quote:

Why do you think Josh has been written out?
When Josh and the other actors finish filming their own scenes, the crew post pictures with them and say "that's a wrap with ruth wilson, dominic ecc..". They always say that because they never know if the show is renewed or not. I am sure this is the same for Josh. He said that because Sarah had 3 seasons planned.

Keep calm and read this :D. Sharrwhite is one of show writers ;)

Emily Duncan ‏@bakerbyaccident
@Sharrwhite With @VancityJax exiting the show at season's end, will that mean season 3 is it for you guys?

Sharrwhite @Sharrwhite
@bakerbyaccident @VancityJax Who said anything about anything?

Friendly reminder that tonight, they will air the second episode right after the first one. :woot:

Season 3 of 'The Affair' Continues with Fractured Points of View

Quote:

We will see in flashbacks what some of those consequences were, and where they took the characters. We will also meet at least one new major character, Juliette Le Gall (Irene Jacob), who comes into Noah’s life.

We know she’s important because Treem says she will be getting her own half-hour of perspective.

All Affair episodes are divided into two parts, with both parts recounting many of the same events from the perspective of two characters.

In the first season, that was only Noah and Alison, as their affair began and we saw that even then, they had very different perceptions on matters like who was the aggressor and who did what when.
In the second season, Cole’s and Helen’s viewpoints were added. (West with Tierney, right.)

Le Gall will be added in the third season and Treem says that down the line a third male character could also be included.

That may depend on how long The Affair runs, which Treem says it an open question at the moment.

“I always saw it running three years,” she says. “But that’s yet to be seen. I don’t have a definite idea right now where the characters will end up when we do finish. I did have some ideas that have already changed.”
---
Also, she suggests the characters protect themselves from “the dark side” by tailoring memories.

That’s the major point of the show, she says, that belief and faith can be the most important factors in shaping our feelings and actions.
So don’t expect The Affair ever to add some neutral third party who explains exactly what did happen with, say, that fatal accident.

“However much longer it runs,” says Treem, “we will continue telling the story through the perspective of the characters.”
If they get S4 and keep Juliette Le Gall as Noah´s new love and add another male character with his own POV, that could mean that Alison, Cole and their child might not be in S4. According to S.Treem Noah is the heart of this show (not Alison). So if the show comes back they might continue with Noah, Helen, their kids, Juliette and a new male character.

If Sarah says that there might be a third male character's POV, this means that there will probably be another male character other than Josh/Cole.

Anyway, i think there are many things Sarah can still write about Cole-Noah, Cole-Helen, Helen-Alison that she didn't explore yet, and i doubt she wouldn't know how to add new details to the main character's own storylines. She doesn't need to include other characters. Juliette is enough.

If they keep 4 original main characters with their POVs and add 2 more POVs- it will be 6 POVs - does anyone really want to watch such a show?

We will see what happen, but Ruth said that she had very little on-screen time with Noah this season. I just don´t really see how they can keep her and Cole in Noah´s life: Joanie is not Noah´s daughter, Alison lives now in Montauk, Noah has another potential love interest (plus Helen and his kids) and Alison seems busy with her kid and Cole this season.

Juliette Le Gall-character sounds like a replacement for Alison. And if Alison is gone so is Cole.

Josh´s IG post sounds like a goodbye to the character and the show. To be honest, I won´t be disappointed if he finds another project. I like D.West, but N.Solloway is not in my heart, so I won´t watch if Cole/Alison storyline is over after S3.

I'd agree with you except for the fact that Ruth made it sound like she'd be back for another season. It does sound like a final farewell from Josh. I'd not be sorry for him to move on except I'm afraid he might disappear from acting altogether.

I read a few articles, reviews, etc this morning and I wonder if Sarah Treem's I love Noah in her articles is a response to the reviews and fan dislike of Noah.

Either way, it seems premature to start deleting the show off in the future or whatever. We don't know what happens after the first three episodes in terms of focus. The cast, like us, might not know if there will be a 4th season, thus the more final nature of their comments. Or they're doing it for the PR.

Let's not forget a lot of the filming had to be shuffled around because Sarah's pregnancy delayed the start and Ruth and Maura had made other commitments.

Tracydeanne1 11-20-2016 06:55 AM

If Cole really has been written out of the show (who knows), that would be it for me, I wouldn't continue to watch.
And adding yet another point of view would just be getting ridiculous.

I also wouldn't anticipate it being a happy ending of Cole running off into the sunset as a loving family with Alison and Joanie. It's not that kind of show.

JJH85 11-20-2016 07:08 AM

At this point I think it is just a case of not knowing if they will be renewed for another season or perhaps they know they won't and aren't allowed to say anything in case it affects viewership for S3.

I don't know if the should could survive without the original four main characters, but that may one be because I'm not a Noah fan; however, there are a lot of folks out there that aren't either and it's still popular and is still getting picked up by other Countries.

I look forward to Josh doing another project and I hope something happens soon for him, so he doesn't go off the grid.

Thanks for the New Thread. I just realized that I never finished the OP in the last Thread, so I guess it will just have to stay that way now that we have a new Thread.

I likely wouldn't continue either. Yes, it was all about Josh for me, but I also found the Lockhart's more interesting than the Solloway's right from the beginning. However, I could see myself binge watching it after it was over just to see where the story went.

If the show moves forward without Cole then I can see Montauk being taken out of the picture all together because there really wouldn't be a reason to shoot there and we can assume that Cole and Luisa and the rest of the family continue on with their lives.

Did you read writer Sharrwhite's response on twitter, about Josh leaving the show? You know how josh loves being a bit "poetic" sometimes when he writes his posts
If i were in you i wouldn't read too much in Josh's words. Really.

Tracydeanne1 11-20-2016 07:54 AM

Honestly, I wouldn't be sad to never have to watch this show again. ;) I've tried getting a number of people into it, and they all come back with "too boring". I'm surprised it's popular.

Give Josh his own documentary/nature show on the environment. Perfect next project! ;)

I'm just going with the speculation, but I never take anything as fact until I get official confirmation.

Yes, I read it and it sounds like a bit of a non-answer. Maybe he's not saying goodbye forever to the role but in his IG post and the one from the other guy talking about the past 3 years with Josh, they sound pretty final.

Whatever - if Josh has some new projects I'd be very happy for him to finish with the show.
