Acclaimed country-music drama “Nashville” has returned for a fourth season—with more jaw-dropping, heartbreaking moments than ever before.

Season Three concluded with the ultimate cliffhanger—a flatline—as Deacon went under the knife to receive a liver transplant from his sister, Beverly. And when all is said and done, Rayna must learn to negotiate professional demands in the face of unthinkable personal tragedy. After the birth of her daughter Cadence, Juliette began to suffer from worsening postpartum depression and consequently recommitted to her music and movie careers—a choice that will cause her professional life to sizzle but her family life to fizzle. Her husband Avery, meanwhile, must determine how—and where—to raise their baby girl. Rayna’s teenage girls, Maddie and Daphne, grapple with growing pains of their own, knowing they have different fathers—one of whom (Deacon) may die in surgery and the other of whom (Teddy) is headed to prison.

Elsewhere, cowboy Luke Wheeler has recruited superstar Juliette Barnes to be on his record label—a timely boon, considering his biggest artist, Will Lexington, came out publicly at a press conference to the surprise of the whole industry. Scarlett and Gunnar, who together comprise musical duo The Exes, still remain exes as they embark on tour for their latest E.P., but their chemistry—both onstage and off—might soon be too powerful for them to deny. And Jeff Fordham, Rayna’s nemesis, continues to be romantically enmeshed with Highway-65 artist Layla Grant, the only person who can see the good in him but whom he always manages to hurt—whether he means to or not.

This season will see ”Nashville’s” singers, songwriters and superstars struggle to reconcile their public and private realities. Some will fight to climb to—or stay on—the top. Some will succumb to their own ambition. And all will learn how to survive in the wake of loss—proving that music may be at the heart of Music City, but drama always reigns.

“Nashville” stars Connie Britton as Rayna Jaymes, Hayden Panettiere as Juliette Barnes, Clare Bowen as Scarlett O’Connor, Chris Carmack as Will Lexington, Will Chase as Luke Wheeler, Charles Esten as Deacon Claybourne, Jonathan Jackson as Avery Barkley, Sam Palladio as Gunnar Scott, Maisy Stella as Daphne Conrad, Lennon Stella as Maddie Conrad and Aubrey Peeples as Layla Grant.

Dee Johnson (“Boss,” “The Good Wife”), “The War Room,” “A Perfect Candidate”), Callie Khouri (“Thelma & Louise”) and Steve Buchanan are executive producers of ““Nashville”.” The series is produced by Lionsgate, ABC Studios and Opry Entertainment

So does there seem to be any resolution between D/R before the end of the ep? I've been waiting for Rayna to take ownership of her end of their problems for a long time now. It can't just be Deacon apologizing all the time.

Yes, it can, and yes, it will be. The show will never have its picture perfect model of the Strong Independent Woman™ accepting personal responsibility for anything.

Yes. He comes home and sleeps in their bed. They want to work on the marriage. But of course Maddie is off in LA drinking...so smart for the daughter of an alcoholic who just brought up that her father got violent when he was drinking. Looks like they're going to end the season with Maddie on a bender.

That's good news, thanks TVFan! I've been expecting that with Maddie, frankly thought that and her desire to sing on her own would be the big things they dealt with in this half of the season. Never saw the emancipation stuff coming. Wonder if the season will end with them taking her somewhere to dry out?

As a dyed in the wool Avery fan for me there is one positive about this whole Layla/Avery business. Since the start of this show Avery has been, in one form or another, Mr. Juliette Barnes. Yet she has been the most unimaginable gf, wife, mother possible. At least with Layla if she becomes successful through his efforts he should get the recognition his skills deserve. Juliette, as far as I am concerned, has blown her chances with him many times over.

Is this at the end of the episode-- after everything was aired out in their counseling session? Or is it in the beginning and what leads them to counseling?

Any insight or clarity in these sides as to what exactly went down with Frankie/jail/Deacon being kicked out/Rayna leaving? As awful as that all sounds, I'm at least glad that Deacon and Rayna are committed to remaining together through it all.

I doubt Avery will ever again be recognized for his own skills on this show. It (his story) is always about the woman he is with. That isn't any better with Layla than it was with Juliette. In fact, the story really is all about Layla and Juliette, with Avery as collateral damage. This show has never done anything with Jonathan Jackson except waste his talent for the sake of propping everyone else.

Avery was with Scarlett s1-s2 (on-off) till end of s2B. With Juliette professional Avery got a CMA nom and the credit to Deacon's, Scarlett's and Sadie's album. She took a chance on him professionally when he had nothing left. Avery gets nothing from Layla professionally other than being used for publicity to get people to come to her shows. It has nothing to do with his efforts, all to do with Layla getting paps to get pics of them kissing to try to be more popular than Juliette who is so far being mom to Cadence while Avery is busy being duped.

Yes. I agree completely. I would love for Avery to be successful in his own right, not because of the person he's dating.

Also agree that Layla's plan isn't even about Avery. He just happened to be Juliette's ex. He could have been anybody. AND her plan isn't even about Jeff. This has nothing to do with getting "justice" for Jeff or correcting his death certificate or anything like that. If it were about him, she would have went to Juliette/Luke after she learned the truth and demanded they go public with the truth.

I thought the side said she was in NYC during the drinking scene. Seriously what a way to end the series if we end there. We are one of the 6 shows not to get any news yet. That is a huge gamble if they don't have some sort of ending.

Sorry, you're right, NY. I'm in LA and typed that by accident.

And the R/D scene in bed is at the end of the episode after the counseling, etc.

Does that mean the sides for the series finale are out?

*Edit* I think I misunderstood.

yeah I meant the last episode possibly being about whatever trouble Maddie gets in with alcohol at the end of 420.
