(On Rumplestiltskin's voice)“There’s no way I could speak in my normal voice while looking so extraordinary and while having this bizarre stuff to say,” the actor reasoned. “I tried many different types of voices and the thing that I landed on was completely by chance, really, thanks to my son. He was wandering though the house making these high-pitched voices and sounds I thought, ‘Rumpelstiltskin has a child-like quality to him, he kind of enjoys gleefully tricking people.’”

There's something about these performances in the past few years. In a slight sense it’s about age but without a doubt it has also given me what I used to call weight. I remember when I was in Scotland and I first started acting with these older actors and they had weight. They didn’t have to act. It was just there. I think I’m finally on that path to gravitas.“

The fact that you’re working harder on the surface seems more difficult, but you get into a way of working where if you’re not allowed to stop and breathe and think about it, you just go on instinctively, which is the way I prefer anyway. (about Mr Gold) “I try to keep him absolutely neutral,” he says. “I almost do [Mr. Gold] in slow motion. It’s the exact opposite of what I’m doing with Rumpelstiltskin. He resonates calm. There’s not many times as an actor you get to play the opposite ends of the scale.”

Many actors look at the costume before the part, and that seems crazy to me. It’s much more fun to be ugly. Not that I think I’m ugly, but I’ve never considered myself good-looking.”

It gave me the opportunity to define this character for a whole new generation… certain parts you play all you’re thinking about perhaps is oh… voice or maybe movement. This was a combination of everything. I had to think about how he was going to move, how he was going to look, how he was going to sound… my six year old son is always wandering about the house with a strange voice saying [random noises] and I was like…”

Rumple really is a complex character. IMO the most complex. He was a good man that always wanted to do the right thing for those he loved. He was motivated by love, and because of his past abandonment and treatment by others he wants power so no harm can come to them.

I never understood the cowardice moniker either. Going aboard a pirate ship full of bad men that would do you harm in an instance was brave.
To go home and care for your young child and be both mother and father was brave.

But I can also see the the faults in him and acknowledge that. He's been selfish and closed off, but that is also from being bullied, kicked around, abandoned by father, wife, etc

In some of the characters I’ve played there’s little pieces of relevance to me, to my life. But they’re very, very little. I’ve got elements of wildness in me, there’s no doubt about that.

I think what defines him is too complex. A/E have written him that way. Nothing is ever straightforward. You can't say he did thigns because of power, or because of his fears, and issues. It's not really just one thing.

Like Rumple is not really just one person is he.

He's the spinner, the good man that tried to do right by his family, and loved them.

He's the man abused and beaten down by his father, wife, Hook, Hordor, etc.
He's the dark one, that was consumed by the darkness and did horrible things at the beckoning of the curse inside him.

He's the man that found some control of the darkness, and became a hero sacrifcing himself to save those he loved. the most any villain has done on the show. Though kudos to Regina for giving up Henry and giving Emma/Henry happy memories.

Now he's a man back from the dead, and we'll see what turmoil in residing inside him.

Mainly he''s a man so motivated by love and protecting those he loves when he was crippled and unable too that it blinds him.

Rumple was so abused in his life that in large part the mask he wears as the Dark One is so he won't be hurt again. I think Belle and Bae were the only ones who really believed in him ever and loved him. Although I would like to know more about the women who raised him.

His father was so hideous to him. I adore little boy Rumple. The whole character is just heartbreaking, and it's always amazing that he can still love.

I never though Rumple was a coward at all. I see his faults and don't make excuses except for the fact that he was cursed and I think a lot of what he did was heavily influenced by the dark one and not something Rumple would have done if he wasn't cursed, so I do tend to feel more forgiving of him than the other villains!

I never thought he was a coward, either. Except emotionally sometimes, but Imo that's totally understandable after everything he's been through.

And this is what makes him the most interesting character in the show, and my favorite. Plus, RC does such a great job portraying this complicated, emotionally damaged man.

did you read the commentary by Robert about the scene with the corn husk doll when Felix gives it to him?

He tells a story about his dad taking him to see the Aristocats when he was a kid, and it was the first time he saw a merchandise booth, and he wanted one of the stuffed cats of the character he liked. So his dad got it for him, even though they were “poorer than poor” and he held onto this stuffed cat for like 5 years. He took it everywhere with him.

so bittersweet. Robert had a rough childhood. Mother abandoning him, very poor.

no wonder he acts those emotional moments so well.

Yeah, I remember hearing that story.

He grew up in Glasgow, didn't he? I know many people who grew up quite rough there. But those who managed to get through it, many of those have become wonderful, strong people from the experience.
