Regina’s actions are predicated on hate while Gold’s actions are predicated on love – it’s really as simple as that. Regina fans will defend her by arguing that Rumple/Gold fans have no leg to stand on because he has done terrible things as well. That’s true, but I can buy his redemption story because (a) he made a horrible choice in bringing the curse down on himself – out of love and desire to protect his son and (b) once the initial glee of being the DO wore off, I think Rumple became miserable and hated himself for what he became. Regina, on the other hand, relished being evil – it gave her joy – AND she was able to kill the things she loved most. In fact, she still relishes her power. Gold was willing to give it all up for his son. They both have things to repent for to say the least, but I don’t really find Regina a tormented soul whereas I find Rumple/Gold to be that and more.
