(On Rumplestiltskin's voice)“There’s no way I could speak in my normal voice while looking so extraordinary and while having this bizarre stuff to say,” the actor reasoned. “I tried many different types of voices and the thing that I landed on was completely by chance, really, thanks to my son. He was wandering though the house making these high-pitched voices and sounds I thought, ‘Rumpelstiltskin has a child-like quality to him, he kind of enjoys gleefully tricking people.’”

There's something about these performances in the past few years. In a slight sense it’s about age but without a doubt it has also given me what I used to call weight. I remember when I was in Scotland and I first started acting with these older actors and they had weight. They didn’t have to act. It was just there. I think I’m finally on that path to gravitas.“

The fact that you’re working harder on the surface seems more difficult, but you get into a way of working where if you’re not allowed to stop and breathe and think about it, you just go on instinctively, which is the way I prefer anyway. (about Mr Gold) “I try to keep him absolutely neutral,” he says. “I almost do [Mr. Gold] in slow motion. It’s the exact opposite of what I’m doing with Rumpelstiltskin. He resonates calm. There’s not many times as an actor you get to play the opposite ends of the scale.”

Many actors look at the costume before the part, and that seems crazy to me. It’s much more fun to be ugly. Not that I think I’m ugly, but I’ve never considered myself good-looking.”

It gave me the opportunity to define this character for a whole new generation… certain parts you play all you’re thinking about perhaps is oh… voice or maybe movement. This was a combination of everything. I had to think about how he was going to move, how he was going to look, how he was going to sound… my six year old son is always wandering about the house with a strange voice saying [random noises] and I was like…”

Can I just say how inspirational Bobby is? I read the quote from the Op and I gotta say that he inspire me to keep on moving. I like how he said that he just a wee guy from Glasgow but he made a career out of characters who are less than nothing or doesn't have a voice. It's truly amazing what he had done for Rumplestiltskin. The original tale has next to nothing about him but OUAT and Bobby has turned him into one of the most complex characters.

I just respect and adore Bobby to no end. Truly amazing actor

Both Bobby and the characters he's created on OUaT have inspired me tremendously. I am in awe of his talent and just about everything else about him. His personal qualities shine through Gold and Rumple making them both extremely complex, likeable and sympathetic even when they are acting in ways that should make us dislike them. The man is truly amazing.

I'm in awe of Bobby's talent. The one I compare him to is Michael Crawford, the original Phantom of the Opera. I fell head over heels for him because of his remarkable ability to do anything and to do it brilliantly. I honestly didn't think I'd have room in my heart for another love, but Bobby pushed himself there. He's an absolutely astonishing actor and a wonderful human being. Aside from personal feelings, I admire him tremendously. He is so comfortable in his own skin and doesn't take bull from anyone, yet he is also kind and warm and he is beloved to his fans because he truly appreciates them.
