It's not a law there that every property owner must shovel the sidewalk in front of their homes by 10 am after the snow falls? In BC, they kept reminding everyone, so ours don't look like that Dangerous!

The last picture looks like typical Swedish winter. We have it every year and I don't see anything wrong with it. I guess I'm so used to it.

It is a typical Montreal winter as well, and it is normal to have that here. I think, 15 years after the fact, I'm still getting used to the "heat" we get in winters here. It messes everything up. Like, I could handle tonnes of snow. It's not fun, but I know how to deal with that.

Snow that constantly melts into ice and then snows again and then ice again? There's nothing I can do about it.

And, Leanne, to answer you question, I don't think we have laws about shovelling our bits of sidewalks here. It's actually part of why the whole "Canada Post is stopping door-to-door delivery" that's not flying at all in Montreal. We're all living on top of each other.

Unless you're pretty well off, you don't have about three or four neighbours who could equally be held responsible for the same bit of sidewalk. The building owner usually lives nowehre near the building you live in. And, of course, you could "take care" of your bit of sidewalk till the cows come home, the second the owner of the two or three cars parked in front of it want to use their car, they're likely to dump any snow/ice they take off their car unto your bit of side walk.

Plus, from the look of the park meters in the picture I posted (which, by the way, may or may not actually be Montreal. I just looks like what my sidewalk looks like.), that sidewalk is in front of commercial buildings. So, again, who owns what is unsure.

We don't have Nordstrom here (yet, they're apparently trying to pierce the Canadian market). But, whenever I go shopping in the States, I do avoid those stores that charge you at least five times the price of the same basic shirt.

Mandie Here, we kinda give the side-eye to people who walk out in shoes in the winter. They offer no protection against the cold and, more importantly, slip and slide on the ice. But, you know, kids these days...

I have winter boots. Winter boots that are waterproof, offer traction on the ice (though there's only so much of that you can do with rubber), are warm and comfortable.

So, I get that the public transport organization is not responsible for every moron who tries to kill themselves by metro in the middle of the day, or for people who have whatever health emergency that causes them to interrupt the service on a given line and announce to communters that service has been interrupted because emergency services need to get to someone.

That's not their fault. Okay.

But, when I'm taking the metro a solid 1.5-2 hours after the fact, why has service not been returned to freaking normal? Why do I feel like the public transport are using the real incident as an excuse to run fewer trains and therefore have to pay fewer conductors?
