It's a Firefly reference though, right?

Um, no? Its a River Phoenix reference which is really weird cause I've never actually seen any of his movies I've just had this fascination with him since I was a kid and his name is gorgeous so
I hadn't thought about how many other fandoms fit into it til now

I've never seen it, all I ever saw of him was a picture in a magazine I had and I cut it out cause he was so pretty and his name was so pretty and it was years later that I realized the sentence 'the late Mr Phoenix' meant that he was dead I should watch his movies one of these days

Ah, poor you! My Own Private Idaho is a Gus Van Sant movie, so it's definitely on my rewatch-list. We should watch it together

Here are some pictures from the first Young Americans Gathering in 2001.
I'm having trouble locating my pictures from the actual banquet
type dinner that we had, but here are some of the filming locations!

This is a banner that my co-organizer made! I believe his last sn on here was Johnneh101.

This is where they took all the exterior shots of Rawley Girls. This was our most difficult location to get photos,
the caretaker of the grounds came out and was not happy to see us.
And was even more unhappy that we were taking pictures!
We truly thought she was going to call the cops!

This was in the center, or square of Havre de Grace.
An antique shop that they turned into Friendly's restaurant.
As you can see the awning is still there.
We spoke with the shop owner and he showed
us a few things the crew left behind.

Here's Bella's gas station/house. It was a paint supply store when we visited in 2001.
While we were taking pictures, a very friendly woman
in the small cafe next door came out and welcomed us to her town.
She was excited to tell us about what it was like having the YA crew
and actors there. And she offered us ice cream.
All of the people were so warm and welcoming.

This is roughly where Scout and Bella, and then Scout and his dad,
were talking in "Winning Isn't Everything"

I can't remember the name of the place(I'm sure one of you knows it!)
but this is where all of the dock/water scenes took place.
The Rawley logo was still on the canoe and we were all super happy to see it!

A view of the dock that you see a lot in the show.
Most memorably when Will is late and jumps in with all of his clothes on.
(sorry about the finger in the shot, I was just a kid
and working with a disposable camera! haha)

The dock (at a different location than the previous photos) where Jake
and Hamilton stopped so Jake could change into her dress.

This is a picture of the bricks that were painted on
the road in the town square/center.

View down the road taken from in front of the gas station.

Screen cap of the area with the bricks and a view down the road.
The planter/flag pole were put in only for the show,
it was gone when we visited.

I really thought I had more photos but I haven't been able to find them.
I have a box somewhere with all of my YA stuff in it.
I have a couple reprints of scripts that I'd like to pass along to someone
who will appreciate them more. I'll have to find it all!

We also visited the drive-in movie theater featured in the show which was
really awesome. And we found the tracks they walked along in the finale.
Oh, and we went to the restaurant that Jake and Hamilton went to for their date.
We visited a bunch more places but it's been 11 years and my
memories aren't coming back so easily!

Thank you so much for sharing all of your pictures! I definitely remember the banner from the gatherings website that was still around waaay back in the day! and I remember Johnneh, he was still around when I started posting here. I got one of the YA fan book-thingies from him that were left over from the gathering (though I think that was the 2002 gathering?)

Did I mention the pictures are ridiculously pretty? I wish I could visit all those fantastic places. Stupid distance!

Let us know once you find your YA stuff! I should really start digging for my own YA box, there's probably so much in there that I've already forgotten about

OMG, thank you so much for sharing those pictures with us, simply looking at them felt surreal, I can only imagine how amazing it must have been to actually go to those places

Thank you!

YAfanatic,

Thank you very much for the lovely summer 2001 photos of Havre de Grace and Baltimore during the First YA Gathering. Sounds like a lot of fun. All kids? Or were there some adult fans there, too? (I ask because I'm in my late 50s, and fell in love with YA in my late 40s, when I watched it with my wife and kids.)

I particularly like the photo of the canoes with the Rawley crest stuck onto their bows. Those were at the Loch Raven Fishing Center, about 10 miles north of downtown Baltimore.

And Rawley Girls' is The Castle at Maryvale Prep School, also in the northern suburbs of Baltimore.

The marina where Hamilton tells Jake he loves her in episode 6 is the Middle Branch Marina, in Middle Branch Park, on the Patapsco River, about two miles south of downtown Baltimore. The bridge in the background during that scene is the Hanover Street Bridge, built c. 1915, across the middle branch of the Patapsco.

In return, permit me to refer you to this board's last "YA Pictures" thread, here, one which I posted more recent photos of many YA filming locations. For your particular amusement:

Pazza Luna, the restaurant where Jake and Hamilton dine (and Hamilton does his male chauvinist pig act) in episode 6.

The Tyrconnell Estate (Rawley Boys' exterior and grounds)

Tide Point, YA production HQ

"The Block" in downtown Havre de Grace at Christmas 2011

YAfanatic, I live in Washington, the next town down the road from all this. And there are still a lot of YA sites I haven't seen. All I've seen is Havre de Grace, nothing in Baltmore or its suburbs.

P.S.: Maybe I should take my wife to Bengie's drive-in ... Was it nice?

P.P.S.: Pazza Luna has changed hands since you dined there, but ... how was the food?

P.P.P.S: Reality can be almost as lovely as YA. Welcome to my little corner of Washington:

.

Bumping this back to page 1 so that YAfanatic can find my thank-you, immediately below.

YAfanatic - Please also see my post on this board's JaHammer thread, at http://www.fanforum.com/65129896-post65.html. I found the old YA Gatherings page of Nelle Horn's YA fansite preserved on archive.org.

I think it wasn't only teenagers, as far as I remember from seeing pictures on the board way back in the day.
