(On Rumplestiltskin's voice)“There’s no way I could speak in my normal voice while looking so extraordinary and while having this bizarre stuff to say,” the actor reasoned. “I tried many different types of voices and the thing that I landed on was completely by chance, really, thanks to my son. He was wandering though the house making these high-pitched voices and sounds I thought, ‘Rumpelstiltskin has a child-like quality to him, he kind of enjoys gleefully tricking people.’”

There's something about these performances in the past few years. In a slight sense it’s about age but without a doubt it has also given me what I used to call weight. This was a combination of everything. I had to think about how he was going to move, how he was going to look, how he was going to sound… my six year old son is always wandering about the house with a strange voice saying [random noises] and I was like…”

Wanted to comment on the link to the meta you posted in the old thread, ;; i've got an elastic heart {AUTOPLAY}.

Great analysis by the author of the meta. You always find really insightful discussions. I couldn't agree with this one more. I think, as she said, all the information has been laid out before us all along. It's just been in bits and pieces and you have to tie them all together. I also liked the distinction she made that Rumple has been the only villain who didn't choose to be one!

Haven't finished the meta yet (late, tired), but I seem to agree with all of it so far.

I just want to mention what seems to be another part of the Dark One's Curse. I think all of us have complained how no one in the town seems to remember the good things Rumple has done? It seems to have grown stronger this last season. I'm really wondering if the curse, especially as it begins to overwhelm its host, doesn't gain power to corrupt the people around the host, especially in how the host is perceived.

While I don't want to excuse what seems to be bad writing this season, it would make a lot of sense if the curse encouraged people to lose sight of the good man inside of Rumple. If you want someone to be consumed by darkness, you want to limit that person to a support group that sees that person as evil. People who see Rumple as good aren't helping from the curse's POV.

It could explain things like Regina grabbing the dagger at the end of last season to command Rumple and then keeping it--and everyone, including Emma (who grew up in the US where supporting slavery vies with dating siblings for the repulsive factor), seems to think this is OK.

No one says things like trauma, PTSD, or "Make an appointment with Archie. Now."

Anna, who can get over Ingrid freezing her for thirty years, putting a curse on her that made her lock Elsa in an urn for thirty years, and cast the same curse on an entire town for the purpose of mass murder, can be forgiven as soon as she finds a note her mother left.

Rumple, who turned someone into a mous and got her to stab him, is unforgivably evil in her eyes--even when she'd thought five seconds before knowing his name that he must be a very kind person and knowing thirty years have gone by, Anna tosses the conflicting evidence and immediately assumes there's no way Rumple could change and that he must be irredeemably evil.

Hook, who met Rumple before his curse and lived with Rumple's ex for years, seems to have forgotten that the poor spinner was not quite like the Dark One. He assumes he could kill Rumple and that the curse wouldn't really change him.

These and lots of other examples don't speak well of the collective IQ of Storybrooke. They also suggest that people are getting their vision clouded. It's gaining the power to impact people outside of Rumple, doing the same things it does inside of him. They don't think clearly. They don't see the moral consequences--or even the practical consequences--of their actions.

Not that it's likely, but my best case scenario for the show would be that Belle has figured this out. Belle seems to have the most resistance to the curse. She's able to see Rumple for who he is (usually) and has been able to get other people to do the right thing when the curse might have been effecting them.

So, for example, Regina gives the dagger to Belle after Belle goes to speak with her--and Belle returns it to Rumple.

My crazy, insane hope is that Belle has been studying the curse and realizes what is happening. Her lack of reaction when people like Hook discuss crazy plans (like killing Rumple) is because she's standing there realizing she's seeing the curse effect them, like a person in a horror movie who sees the warning signs other people in the room are possessed.

And, up until Regina stole her heart (or maybe even after), Belle has/had a plan.

Interesting theory however. It also "fit" with the BatB disney finale, with the village trying to kill the beast because to them it's just a beast.

Unfortunately, as you said, A&E hasn't shown Storybrooke people to have the highest IQ when concerning Rumple. At the end of 3B Regina gives the dagger to Belle and the charming name their son after Rumple's son (with Snow looking directly at him), and even Moe accepts their wedding (Archie doesn't count, he's always a sweetheart

). I remember at the end of 3B thinking "oh, right, Rumple (and Belle) are finally accepted in the cool kids club"

Then in 4A the charming come to him for business only, he's immediately accused whenever something happens and basically, it looks like we are back in season 2, with people asking Rumple to do stuff and pretending to be helped regardless of their personal relationship with him or accusing him first for whatever is going on. He's sort of back on being "the bad guy regardless" and that's not explained, this change of heart by the other characters.

I don't know. I hope your theory is closer to the truth than mine, because on this topic I do see it as lazy writing. Not bad, but basically, since Rumple must be a villain, it's easier for the main heroes to forget his good deeds

I am very careful on my blog. I want people to feel safe enough to vent, discuss and enjoy Rumbelle as a couple and as individuals. I blacklist hate and when I see it, I will tell people to tag it! and I will unfollow blogs that are filled with hate and negativity. I do my best and I am lucky to have found some intelligent and fun loving people to enjoy dissecting the show with. I am careful about what I bring here and consider if it will add to a discussion or detract from it and I am careful about letting people know if it is anti-insert character's name here. I don't want to upset people so I put an effort into finding and sharing discussions and uplifting metas. Thank you for appreciating them. it is my pleasure!
