I totally agree with Marilyn. She knew him for ages, she knew his heart, his character. And still she acted the way she did. She even risked him being killed by Red... I think that's what she wanted. It would have crushed Red's soul.

Red was so stressed at the time. I was afraid he would hurt Dembe and then learn the truth.

He wouldn't have done that I believe. But Dembe feared the same and therefore left. He wanted to prove his innocence when facing Red again because he knew which stage he was in.

I know for sure that Red would have never hurt Dembe. I think he might have been prepared for the fact that somebody was going to try to set Dembe up against him. Somebody was attacking his business already and using Dembe would be a logical step for them.

I think he doubted Dembe for a second and I base that one this conversation between Red and Liz:

Liz: "Aram insists Dembe is innocent."
Red: "I need to be the judge of that."
Liz: "He is not the one hurting you. He was using Aram to find that person."
Red: "People run when they are scared and when they are guilty. You can afford to hope for the best but to survive in my world.. I assumed the worst."

I just finished re-watching The Apothecary and I still am struck on how shocked Red is when he finds out it was the Scotch that poisoned him.

And still I believe Red should be judge enough to know that Dembe really was afraid since Red went on killing every person he held dear. He even told Liz that he believes the only people he still cared about where Liz and Agnes. He didn't mention himself because he believed that the same fate would await him shall he betray Red.
Now seeing Red say that it must be of fear, he should have thought about it twice.

I think he knew that Dembe ran away out of fear. Maybe he doubted him for a second but after that I am sure Red knew Dembe had nothing to do with it.

It's funny that I re-watched this episode just last night and I really got the impression that Red thought Dembe might be guilty as well. Right after he voices this quote, he seems unsure again. I think in general, Red trusted Dembe but after all the betrayal that had happened he was being unsure.

You know, we can't really blame him if he doubted Dembe and I think Dembe wouldn't blame him for that either. Especially because of what was done to him.

Yes, that's true. The most important is that Dembe wouldn't blame him for it since he saw exactly what happened to Red over the past months. I'm glad though that Dembe was smart enough to leave at first to search for the person who did it on his own.
