That could be it but I wonder why they would've set him up so much sooner if he was a throw away character? I think they realised later that they didn't know what to do with him or why they added him which made him easy to turn into a throw away character when they needed one to help write Abby out

Yep, and it makes sense to have one, in a way, in case they ever want a big death but don't want it to be a big character.
