That's a good place to get history from.

How is his book?

The book is funny.

Have you ever heard Garry Marshall talk?

Because I think the book would still be interesting if I hadn't ever heard him speak.

It's written in an interesting way and it references TV shows (Happy Days) and movies (Pretty Woman) that I know, you know?

But because I know exactly how his voice sounds, and because it's written in exactly the way he talks, it's super funny.

Oh that sounds great.

I will have to see if the library has it, because I have heard him, too.

And I love all of his stuff that I've seen, from what I remember.

I'm so glad it's happy and funny for you, and that you're enjoying it so much!

He's very frank about his talents and what motivated his decisions.

It makes him very likeable.

He talks about how he kept producing TV shows longer than he could have because it was one way to make sure he could spend all the time he wanted with his kids.

Like, in terms of a work schedule, TV worked for him because his work week gave him weekends off to be with his family.

He talks about using the scripts from the original The Odd Couple TV shows (with Tony Randall), with Garry Marshall produced) 20 years later to do a remake with black actors.

He says it was a bad idea from the start because all the network wanted to do was do a show and save a buck by not hiring writers for it, and Mr Marshall says writers are essential to a show's success.

Anyway, the way he describes it is funny.

In says, "in a debate between artistic integrity and giving people jobs, I chose food."

I don't know. That's funny to me.

That's good that he was there for his kids.

That is funny.

Smart man.

Well, that's it.

He's funny in the way he tells the story, but he's also pretty smart.

The way he tells it, it's almost like he lucked into a successful career.

But it's easy enough to ready between the lines.

He worked hard enough to make up for whatever mistakes he made along the way.

He never left those mistakes stop him.

And he was smart enough to take advantage of the opportunities that came his way and to make choices that would give him the kind of life he wanted to have.

It's kind of inspiring, really.

I can believe he'd feel he lucked into it.

There was definitely enough work, in his case, and time, to make up for mistakes.

It's really inspiring.

It is just reading the bits you've told me.

To me, this is why Garry Marshall is awesome.

He's decent and hard working, but he still has his feet on the ground and he's humble.

And that's probably why he's been so successful.

Because he never acts as though he's got it in the bag.

Which allows him to do the work, you know?

That is a huge thing-to keep his feet on the ground.

And be humble.

It makes me like him even more.

That is great-working hard for what he wants.

And not feeling entitled, or expecting anything.

It really is a big thing for him to be so humble.

I hope that's how he was in real life.

I think it was.

But then this book was written by him.

I think he probably was like that in real life.

Writing a book, it seems like something with that much time and thought, would be hard to fake.

Plus, he is just an awesome person in the interviews I saw him in.

You may be cynical about TV shows, but you're not very cynical about books, are you?

I'm the opposite.

I think Garry Marshall is probably as humble and down-to-earth as he sounds.

And I think if it's not exactly the way he is, then it's probably just a matter of him being human and therefore not perfect.

But, because he wrote the book, and he writes for a living, I think he can make himself sound however he wants to.

That's how I feel.

Well, I don't read that much, so I think it's a plus to be a bit more cynical, with all the reading you do.

Mostly my reading is self help, and we've already discussed that we take what we need.

But autobiographies, I definitely tend to take them at face value.

I don't think there's anything wrong with taking things at face value.

In life, that's generally how I handle things.

If I'm feeling something, I say it.

And when people tell me stuff, I believe them.

But when I'm reading something that's not fiction, I do keep a little bit of a critical eye.

Because you're getting one person's view of things.

And I take at face value that they believe what they're saying.

But they can't tell you what the other guy was feeling at the time.

So it's always just one side of things, you know?
