I got the general impression, too (from Twitter, reviews, youtube comments), that the significance of Sheldon's gift was widely understood and appreciated, though it was definitely a subtle gesture and the subtext would be clear only to someone who gets the dynamics of their relationship. It pleasantly surprised me; in fact I'm often surprised by the broad appeal of this 'couple of weirdos'. They actually go high up on viewer polls of favorite couples, competing with vampires and suchlike. It certainly goes to show that they're powerful.

I like how they are still able to balance it between shippers and "noromos" (kudos to the X-files ). Everyone is getting something from those scenes and can make their own conclusion.
Shamyfans see the romance and the significance behind the EC, "normal" viewers like the weirdness of this present and are laughing because of Amy reaction.
So they keep everyone happy and people continue watching the show

I like that they keep them odd and quirky yet adorable. That's why I'm really adamant they keep Amy as far as possible from appearing like a "normal" girl. I think it's important to keep the balance in the couple of weirdos.

I think that Sheldon's intention with the Emergency Contact information was pretty clear and easy to understand - it was a gesture of commitment and a sign of her importance in his life. As he said, when something bad happens to him, who does he want to share that with? Who does he want to have there? The answer is Amy, and particularly for someone like Sheldon, who really has a deep need to have people around to take care of him, it's a particularly big gesture.

The other thing is that he came up with it on his own. Alex found a whole bunch of wonderful gifts most people would love as presents, but in the end Sheldon came up with a gesture all of his own that made her happy. From the way he delivered it to her, too, I think he knew it would make her happy. He was exceptionally pleased with himself when he gave it to her, and very sweet about the whole thing. The tone of his voice when he says, "read it" and "on the bottom" is both eager and tender. He was really looking forward to her seeing it, and looking forward to her reaction.

The hug is curious, and I've never put in my 2 cents about it, but I will now - I think that Sheldon still has issues with touch, obviously. The way Amy grabbed him and hugged him took him by surprise. He knew she'd be happy with it, but he wasn't expecting a hug. The way he puffed out his cheeks seemed to be a sign of self-reassurance to me, like he was saying, "it's okay, Cooper, you can handle this." It seemed like he was getting a grip and then getting used to it, while he rolled his eyes a bit at how demonstrative she was being. But I didn't get the feeling that he overtly disliked it. To me it was another mark of Sheldon's testing of himself, of bracing himself to deal with physical situations and then decide what he makes of them later, after he's gotten used to the idea and can process the experience.

I really like this take on the hug. I hadn't thought of it, (of course), but it makes perfect sense. Sheldon does not think in terms of physical demonstrations of affection, so even though he knows Amy pretty well, he wouldn't be expecting it because it's not something *he* thinks about - except in terms of trying to get over not liking it. But I agree, once it happened, he was surprised, and maybe it's not really a matter of whether he liked it or didn't; rather, as part of his efforts to "work on it", he had a little inner discussion with himself and determined to brace himself and deal with it - let it happen and see how it goes. Of course, there comes a point, he decides he's done good and that's when he says - and I still feel he was trying to do this is a humorous way - "Ok, stop ruining Valentine's day and order my pizza!".
