So how perfect is it that I started reading the whole story yesterday, and basically was completely on time for a new chapter when this one showed up?!

I have awesome timing.

Now, about something that was said back in the last thread -

I would never say that the jealous "NOT FOR YOU" from Sheldon to Leonard over Amy was the same as his "She's my friend and you're playing with her" from Sheldon to Leonard over Dr. Elizabeth. However, that was not, in any way, the point.

The only point to be made is that there is evidence that Sheldon was looking for a female companion, perhaps subconsciously interested in a romantic relationship, finding the female of his species, or at least craving an emotional and intimate connection with another women before Amy came along. That's buried very deep, of course, and on the surface of things it I think you could actually more often argue that Sheldon wasn't looking for one, and didn't jump at some opportunities that were presented to him.

However, on reflection, I do think you can see that he was upset when he found out Leonard had slept with Dr. Elizabeth, and he felt betrayed. He did let Ramona penetrate deeply into his life, and boss him around for a long time (more evidence to Meg's theory that Sheldon would respond well to a dominate woman in his life) before she crossed a line.

If you look at the women who did cross his path, and whom he did develop relationships with, you can see sometimes the set up for Amy. He was drawn to Ramona because she was smart and interested in his work. He was drawn to Dr. Elizabeth for the same reason. He liked having Dr. Stephanie around and respected her because, again, she was another doctor and very intelligent. His interest in Lalita Gropa was diminished after he spent time with her over dinner, and found her rather boring - she just lectured him on dental hygiene and didn't tell him anything he didn't already know.

Sheldon was always going to be attracted to someone who was smart, and I think that the opening from Amy, about coitus being strictly off the table, immediately meant from the beginning that she wouldn't be putting any sexual or romantic pressure on him. With that expectation off, with Sheldon knowing that there wouldn't be any pressure in that direction, he could have a relationship with her that was of the mind, and explore getting to know her without having to worry about romance or sex. And Amy turned out to be incredibly smart, interested in word play and socially awkward and all of the things that complimented him. He was free to be drawn to her, because going in sex wasn't going to be an issue, and he found in Amy all of the things that attracted to him to the women who had been in his life before without any of the negative aspects, like Ramona taking control of him and not letting him have any room for fun in his life, or being boring, or obviously being overtly sexualized already like Elizabeth, or interested and involved with other men, like both Elizabeth and Stephanie.

By the time we got to the "NOT FOR YOU" aspect of Sheldon's blow up on Leonard, Amy was very well established in his life. He was protective of much more, because much more than been built between them.

Anyway, my aim and my point is not that Sheldon was actually in romantic relationships with those other women, nor that he felt about them the same way he feels about Amy. My point is that Sheldon was more open to and interested in eventually finding a female member of his species, even if that's something I don't think he would ever have admitted, long before Amy came along.

I agree so much with Lio's post. Especially this.

This is exactly what I got from my thoughts about Plimpton, too - that the seed of wanting some kind of intelligent female companionship in his life was there all along, in Sheldon. This doesn't mean by any stretch that he had that kind of companionship with anyone before Amy.. but the development of his attachment to her wasn't out of the blue, as it were (as some Shamy critics claim).

In a more general sense, Sheldon never was 'completely rational and devoted to science', either, though he very much want(ed) to believe in that image of himself. We've seen him throughout having strong emotional needs, reactions and attachments. So we come again to the mind-heart disconnect which Meg explains so well.. the inaccuracy of Sheldon's self-portrait in his mind. The one which is gradually getting healed and filled out with truer colors now.. ? Because of Amy.

Then, she said that coitus and anything leading up to it was off the table. He offered to buy her a drink, and they go up to the counter and look sideways at each other. As soon as she took what makes him uncomfortable out of the cards, he allowed himself to have an interest in her, which he already was in the back of his mind, but he didn't want to chance it if the person was very interested in intimacy.
