Gilmore Girls S&S #119 ~ Silent Sides, Holy Sides

Hi everyone. I’d like to remind you all that this is the main Gilmore Girls spoiler thread, and as such, posters from various shipper groups are free to post here, so if you see someone saying something that you don’t like about “your” favorite character or couple, don’t start fighting with them on this thread, and don’t go into a Gilmore Girls shipper thread if you don’t like the couple that the shipper thread is for. People are free to criticize upcoming events on Gilmore Girls as they read the upcoming spoilers, but don’t use this thread as a free-for-all to bash any characters or couples that you don’t like, or their fans, or you’ll find that you’ll be deprived of the privilege of reading and speculating about Gilmore Girls spoilers again here. Thanks in advance for your anticipated cooperation.

TV GUIDE PODCAST DECEMBER 15TH

DM = Daniel Manu
MA = Michael Ausiello
AC = Angel Cohn
MMcD = Maitland McDonagh

START 16.08

DM: So uh, Mike, let’s really get into this Gilmore stuff.
MA: Let’s get into it.
DM: Because, I mean, once again, you asked her about coming back to write the ending. Is that still a possibility?
MA: Well, let’s first talk about the fact that she’s not watching the show. If you remember from the last interview, Dan said emphatically that they would watch the show. And then now she’s changing her tune. Do you believe her?
MMcD: Well, she’s busy, she’s writing a new show
MA: She’s not that busy.
DM: I find that hard to believe. I mean, imagine if somebody took over your column, Mike, would you not wanna just at least check it out?
MA: Yeah, at least the first one I would check out.
AC: The curiosity factor would really get to me.
DM: Well, maybe she meant not watching it regularly, but she just checked it out.
MA: No, she was pretty clear that she didn’t watch it at all. I loved though how she found out about Luke and --- Lorelai and Christopher getting married when her TV Guide came in the mail.
DM: Yeah, it was spoilt on the cover, yes that is festive.
MA: [breathes in to start talking, DM is faster]
DM: But can-- Yeah, go ahead.
MA: I was just gonna say, whether you agree with her or not, whether you think she’s a genius; she is the most fun interview. I love talking to her.
DM: Well, yeah, well---
AC: Well she’s very honest. Like---
MA: And just some of the pull out quotes from that interview where hysterical.
DM: Well not to get too much into your journalism, but the reason you’re interviews with her are as good is because you allow her voice to actually show up in the words. A lot of people edit in her interviews, you know, to put it into a generic kind of tone. You actually let her slang and her tone and her rhythm come through in the article.
MA: Thanks Dan, for that.
AC: He just gave you a nice compliment.
MA: He did give me a nice compliment.
DM: It’s Christmas, everybody deserves one.

[blablabla]

DM: Mike, we got a letter from Isabella who begs to differ a little bit with Amy, uh, she says that uhh she says it was her baby for six years, and then she up and left her baby. What is that? Sound like they wouldn’t give her exactly what she wanted when she wanted it, the way she wanted it; and because of that she put the show’s future in someone else’s hands. Sounds like she’s stubborn or greedy to me.
MMcD: And a bad mother, apparently.
DM: Reaction, Michael Ausiello.
MA: You know what, no one will really ever know what happened between Amy, Dan and Warner Bros.
DM: I can’t remember what they were fighting about, was it money or? I can’t even remember.
AC: An extra season…
MA: Actually it was about money. Yeah, it was all about that second season. They wanted, Warner Bros. only wanted to extend it for one year, Amy and Dan wanted not a two year renewal for the show, but a two year deal for them, which meant if Gilmore Girls went off the air after one year, they’d still have to pay Amy and Dan.
AC: I want that deal.
DM: And, Mike, you are such a huge fan of Gilmore, everybody knows; and I get the sense in these interviews you do that, you know, you’re wanting something that they’re not able to give you. Like, you want them to come back and write that finale. It seems like they’re constantly disappointing you in that sense.
MA: I think that’s fair.
DM: And how do you feel about that? I mean, do you feel hurt in some way, do you feel disappointed in them?
MA: Well, she left the door open for, you know, for the possibility of a return. I think I would have been bummed if she flat out said ‘no, under no circumstances would I ever return’. But I think all the fans would want, if this is the last year, for Amy to come back and write that last episode. I mean, that’s just, it would be, it would really be sad if it did not happen.
AC: Wouldn’t it be hard on Dave Rosenthal who has, like, done all this season and gone through all this, like, but do you think it would be hard for him to, like, be like, ‘okay, here, you can have it back now’?
MA: Yeah, I think it would probably be difficult, but I think, you know, ultimately, it would be what’s best for the show. But Amy brings up a good point; what if she comes back and she doesn’t like any of the stories, where they are, I still don’t think regardless of what happened this year whether was Amy, whether Amy wrote it or Dave wrote it, if this is the last season, the last episode would probably look pretty similar.
DM: Right.
MA: It will have Rory graduating, and you know, possibly Lorelai, something with Lorelai and Luke.
DM: I just thought about those damn two words she’s always been talking about.
MA: Four. There was two, and then she upped it to four, and actually, I didn’t include that in the interview, but I reminded her in the interview---
DM: Do you know what they are? No? The last four words?
MA: Uhm, why don’t you let me finish what I was gonna say.
DM: Okay. Pardon me. I take back, I take back whatever I said. Go ahead.
MA: Uhm, I reminded her at the end of the interview that if she does not come back for the finale, that she promised to tell me those four words, exclusively.
DM: Sweet. Well, now I hope she doesn’t, because I wanna see those four words. Or she’ll put them on the finale. Either way--
MA: Either way, we’re gonna find out what those four words are.
DM: I’m as curious as hell. I hope it’s not something dopey like ‘see you later’.
MA: We gotta do, like, some sort of big push for that, when we find out those four words.
DM: That’s … don’t say that [???] though, Mike.
MA: We need to do something
AC: [???]
DM: And uh, we got sort of a random letter from Heather in Pennsylvania about Gilmore, totally different topic, she’s actually talking about what’s happened on screen, for a change.
AC: Really? Who talks about that?
DM: Talking about Luke and Anna; she’s kind of bringing up, I don’t know if this is totally insane or not, she thinks maybe Luke isn’t really Anna’s father.
MA: Yeah, I’m hearing that a lot too.
AC: Well, maybe that’s---
MA: Wait, Luke isn’t Anna’s father. Luke is April’s father.
DM: April’s father. Excuse me, April’s father.
AC: That, that … that young girl that did the paternity test.
DM: Exactly; exactly.
MA: But then, I kind of feel like that’s something we should have found out about last season.
DM: And is Luke so stupid not to, like, get a back-up test? Hey, by sides, someone says you’re my dad. What if some other dude walked by.
MA: Well, don’t you think April would get insulted?
DM: That’s true. That’s a good point.
MA: April was really hurt by that.
DM: Yeah.
MA: He could just pull a hair out of her head, you know, when she’s not---
AC: When she sleeps over.
MA/DM/MMcD: [yes, why not talk all at the same time?]
AC: When she sleeps over, it’s on the pillow.
DM: Just casually stick a q-tip in her mouth, and really […], just in case.

END 21.34

Too many titles, not enough threads? We're on a roll here.

Thanks for the new thread!
I was really intruiged by the Rory/Chris discussion in the last few pages...especially with Jungian and Freudian and whatever psychotherapy theories I have been thinking about it A LOT (well, a few months ago) so I just wanted to weigh in and say I really do think that Chris's unpresence in Rory's life had in impact on her. It was in 6.11 that I wondered if ASP's dialogue was deliberate subtext for these issues.

Someone quoted this from a website. The entire piece is significant, but it's that last line that is almost scary:
Quote:
"Roughly between the ages of 19 and 23, when girls begin to think seriously about committing themselves to a man, many seem to reconnect with the pain of their father's leaving," says Wallerstein. "At that point, the girl's fear of failure between men and women begins to emerge." The result is that many of these young women distrust men, fearing that they will abandon them as their fathers did.
6.11:
Quote:
RORY: I mean how fair is that? He's gone, and then he shows up out of the blue. (mimicking Logan's voice) "You can't live here. This place is a dump. And, by the way, I love you". (normal voice) "I love you"?! Is he serious?!

Dr.SHAPIRO: I don't know.

RORY: (getting all worked up and in the verge of tears) Nothing for weeks, and then he just decides that he loves me. So, what happens now? I get another Birkin bag? And how long until he doesn't love me again, huh?
Now, I bet that a lot of people will come back and say this had nothing to do with Christopher and everything to do with Jess. Yeah yeah, I've heard that theory many-a-time and I don't dispute that there was a lot of hinting towards Jess's behaviours. But open your eyes for a second to see the other possibility - That Dean (Mr. Dependable), Jess (Mr. Badboy), Logan (Mr. Like-Dad), and CHRISTOPHER (Aka Mr. Never-There Dad) were all factors in her current perceptions about boys and love.

After all, that last line she says...is just scarring. And I think it's way too deep for it to be only about Jess, who, as we know, never 'didn't love her again.' After all, she moved on after that disappointment in 4.21/4.22. Even as far as to get into a relationship with Dean, and get into a very sweet relationship with Logan.

I dunno...for me, that last line just had to be there for a reason. No boyfriend is obligated to love you forever. But a father is supposed to be your family, someone who loves you unconditionally...A father who just comes around when he feels like it, doesn't come around or call when he doesn't feel like it (which is more often), doesn't keep promises, runs off to be a dad to someone else AFTER promising he'll be around for his first daughter, and neglects to show his her that he thinks about her, is a father that would sow the seeds for a girl's psychological issues.

Cee-Lo owns a Frank the Bunny suit. That's awesome.

Look; I am not one to follow arbitrary rules enforced for no good reason except taxes and the TSA. Taxes and Sexual Harassment at airports is FANTASTIC! Nevertheless, the whole point of leaving thread titles early, stems from me putting them out there. If someone likes them, say Wayne, he can bring it forward. This has happened in the past without a stupid ****ing arbitrary rule. So, if no one brings them forward, ignore them. I will totally understand on my end. Since apparently, foreground and background computing, is too much of a hassle...WICKED BURN!

That aside; I feel Lorelai had a more negative effect on Rory than Chris even would. Yeah, please, site the Graduation Day speech. As a role model, a role model alone, Lorelai is pretty awesome. However, on friend level with her daughter all of her life, Lorelai has done nothing short of saddling her own daughter with all of her bad behaviours. Behaviours that have essentially made Lorelai a spinster. Okay, no one uses SPINSTER anymore, but IT's A Wonderful Life is on NBC to night. SO, I wanted to throw it in there, because that's my favourite part of the film. Due in large part to the ridiculousness of calling a still rather hot Donna Reed in an alternate universe...a spinster. Curse you, Clarence, and your chauvinistic ways!

This rant aside; Lorelai has bad behaviours that Rory now has in spades. If it were not for the way Logan was written from the go get. VOLTRON would have never worked. Since a watered down version of Logan, would have never been able to deal with the LORELAINESS of Rory. Since it's that damn bad.

While I am not totally exonerating Chris' bad parenting. Unlike Lorelai has all this year on THE GILMORE GIRLS on the NEW CW. A freakishly close bond can cause more detrement than no bond at all. Again, Lorelai is not a villian, but she's no FRIEND of the YEAR either. That bond has ****ed up both of their lives on countless occassions. Not knowing her father, I feel, hurt Rory a little less than the bond. Yet, a wound is a wound. No matter the way you got it.

Finally, Sandra, if you would like to discuss things with me, then do it with me. Whatever the **** your responding about dealing WITH ME has no ME in it. Seriously, all of that nonsense you are spewing, that apparently comes from my fingers. In no way represents anyway how I feel. So deal with me or deal with JSSSSWWWWWWJJJJJJK. That's the cloned version of my nickname from the expanded universe of Star Wars. You seem to be responding to the clone. Maybe I should start responding to your clone as well? That way, neither one of us, would be actually discussing anything with each other.

ETA: Mickey, for the love of Emily Gilmore Cabrini, LOGAN IS NOT LIKE CHRIS. CHRIS AND JESS ARE MORE A LIKE than Logan and Chris. Unless you are hung up on the whole MONEY thing like many of the JJs, but that's conjecture on my part. Since, I have been conjecturing for many years, and I understand what it means to conjecture. Yes, that's a shot.

Well, I am glad you understand what I was trying to say. Let's hope there is always, let's say, a Wayne around, would be a shame if your titles would go unnoticed

Jason, even though I understand what you are saying about Chris and Lorelai and their effect on Rory ... I do feel that is unfair. So if the parent is not around let's say, hypothetically at all, sure that parent can't directly *&^& up a kid, indirectly of course still some ... but sure, the one who is trying and is even putting her own life on hold can have also a bad influence, but at the same time there are many positive influences, like you did say (the role model and all), to gain from a parent who is actually there and trying the best she can. The one that actually takes things on is always the one who also takes the risks of some negative consequences happening along the way. But at least that one is giving it a true shot. And I must say that I have never seen or heard a parent state they did all right.

I feel my problem with this in general is that your reasoning sort of promotes taking no responsibilty, because well if you don't put yourself outthere that person can't mess up also ... or well according to you (okee a little without nuance) not as much as the one who has decided to try ...

Great insight Mickey....of course she is projecting her fear of abandonment onto her relationship with Logan; it had nothing to do with Jess as she isn't in love with Jess - she loves Logan. And the fact that she said those things during the same season that her father re-entered her life in a big way has to mean something.

Unfortunately, I have doubts it's going to explored in a satisfying or realistic way. When Amy was at the helm, she never got that deep - it was always about the clever dialogue and witty cultural references. And now DR loaded the season down with all this Lorelai/Christopher crap I don't think he has enough time to tackle Rory's Daddy Issues.

"We need a dance number." "Yes...yes we do."

Yes, great post, once again, comparing two characters that may have a common background, but absolutely NOTHING in common. Thank you JJs. You give me hope that in 20 to 25 years, that maybe people will appreciate Logan much more on NICK AT NITE!

I wasnt being funny Babs. Is there any funny there? I dont see any funny. All I see is my ****ing anger and complimenting the great job done by the TSA and the IRS. You guys and gals, ROCK! Ignore my ****ing titles. I will just begin starting the threads...and there will be no voting. Laugh with me henchman! HAHAHAHA! "Dude, I am on my 20." Damn it. Fine. You want to play MADDEN? "Without evil laughing and evil planning?" Yes... "Okay. We will play MADDEN."
