Moving my last comment here because I still want to talk about the emmys

And honestly, you're right about the Emmys. Especially since they do honor a lot of good shows, writers, and people. I've been watching Veep, and JTV just doesn't compare at all. And while I love the actors, there's only so much they can do. There are equally good actors out there getting much better material and getting the recognition.
From the emmy nominated comedy shows I watch Black-ish, and Modern family. JTV doesn't go anywhere near those two shows when it comes to comedy. The thing I love about both of those two shows is that despite all the haha moments it always manages to touch a chord. I think just this season of Black-ish I teared up in at least 3 episodes. In one episode, the daughter loses her faith in god, and throughout the episode it is hilarious how the crazy religious grandmother and father try to get her back to believing in God. They have these intelligent discussions on God, faith, atheism. The episode had such a beautiful ending I was in tears. That is basically every episode of Black-ish. They deal with relationships, black lives matter, politics, same sex marriage, OH they dealt with how the wife wouldn't take her husband's name and he found it offensive. Everything is done is such a beautiful way, everything is balanced. So yeah giving JTV an emmy nomination and putting it up with these shows would be insulting these shows.

I didn't say anything about Modern Family, I love that show. That one doesn't make me cry as often but even the most boring modern family episode is funnier than the funniest JTV episode.

MF got old for me very fast. I loved the first season, but the second didn't do much for me. I should give it another chance.

I've never seen Black-ish, but it's definitely on my To Watch List.

I've seen people complain about how JTV, Gina, and Jaime aren't getting recognized. But their time is over. Gina and Jaime are both great, but they can only do so much. Like I said, I watch Veep and Gina doesn't come close to what Julia Louis Dreyfuss does. Gina just doesn't get the same material. And Jaime can't compete with someone like Andre Braugher, an excellent actor getting better material. I don't watch Brooklyn Nine Nine, but I'm guessing it's better written than JTV right now.

TYFTNT!!

Oh yeah, comparing the current JTV to the any of the Emmy nominated comedies would be an insult to the others. I think the first season of JTV could have been a contender but nothing after that. The first season of JTV was arguably as good as The Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt (which when it is funny is side splittingly funny but can often be a miss).

Blackish is am amazing show that can deal with tough subjects with sensitivity and comedy. Veep is a truly hilarious and smart show. Modern Family is still funny but it doesn't feel fresh.

I think JTV was coasting on being fresh in terms of execution (fast-paced, narrator, graphics, latina POV, magical realism) but that doesn't cut it anymore. Even the Golden Globes have caught on that this show sucks. Only the fanboy reviewers haven't.

I wonder if Gina is itching to get off this show. She might have a good future in acting and the show is holding her back at this point. With 22 episodes, she probably can't do any other project except in the summers.

Very true about JTV being fresh at the time. Now what made it fresh feels tired. And the quality is gone.

I think the whole JTV cast deserves better. But most of them are POC and/or ethnic types who are going to find it hard to find work in Hollywood. And that includes Gina, She's said as much. JTV might suck, but it's a paycheck.

Whenever we start a new thread, I fall in love with J/R all over again b/c of the gifs, and I go and watch all the music videos.

Fatima, can you add this music video: Moondust? It's a great one Kate found after the S2 finale aired.

Done! I know what you mean. The first page brings back all the memories. I want to go back and watch season 1 again but I don't want to fall in love with it again. I miss 1x03, 1x06.

I think we should do a list of top 10 J/R moments!! Let's see how many favorites we have and then we can choose the best ones.

That's a great idea. It's going to be hard to whittle it down to 10 though.

I guess the top one will the ep 6 kiss.

Those are all great.

I loved when Rafael swung by the house he was going to buy for them. And they both admitted they dreamed of living in a house like that.

I want to gouge my eyes out. How do compare this lame "sex" with GOT (the greatest show to ever exist)? The article is so terrible, oh my god!
Next they'll be comparing the Rose crime story to "Breaking Bad"!

Wanderer78--your posts are beautifully written! One reason I joined this forum is that all of you guys are so smart and eloquent and such good writers. Anyway, in response to what you wrote on the old thread--I'm positive that Jane and Michael did sexy stuff before marriage. There was the scene in the bed at Alba's house I mentioned, and remember the erotic fantasy letter she wrote for him that Raf got by mistake? ("Jane, this caramel situation is just not going to happen". LOL--one of the best lines in the show!) I also think there have been scenes where Jane and Michael are on the phone and about to have phone sex, but can't because Ro or Alba are nearby. Now, writing and talking about sex isn't the same as doing it. But if you're writing kinky sex scenes involving food substances, then you're pretty sophisticated sexually, even if it's just in your head. I have no problem with virgins having an erotic life with foreplay etc. And I always figured that Jane is a healthy, sexual person and good for her for finding a way to get around her virginity. But like you, what bothers me is that the show made such a big deal out of this being Jane's "identity". Really--a woman who writes about doing sexy things with caramel still has virginity as her identity? BAH!

I'm not surprised that Jane and Michael did other stuff before marriage. A lot of times those who are so hardcore about no sex before marriage are having it anyway, its just not vaginal sex. I find it hypocritical, but its not surprising. A lot of things about Jane are hypocritical. I don't mind that in characters when you feel like their judgement is justified, but with Jane I often roll my eyes.

I just can't see how JM are in it for the long haul when they keep depicting it as either boring or unromantic. It would have been one thing if they had just left it at JM finally getting the sex right, but no they had to show him asleep while she went to get champagne. That's just sad and Jane deserved better. There is no spinning that regardless of what those "reviewers" are saying. Now, Rafael is moving on but with Jane's cousin of all people? It just sounds like a way to keep them connected (and her bothered). Plus having a wedding halfway through a series is pretty much a death-knell for a couple.

Aww, thanks for the compliment. That means a lot to me, and right back at you!

The writing and talking about sex don't bother me. A virgin can have be sexually active in their heads. Actually the physical stuff doesn't bother me either. People can do whatever they want whenever they want before and after marriage. I actually knew someone who did everything but before marriage. But they didn't call themselves virgins or judge people. The hypocrisy doesn't even bother me, b/c it's realistic and common. It's the show wanting to have their cake and eat it too that bothers me. Off and on screen they keep calling Jane a fun, good, and honest person, when she's none of those things.

Mostly, it's the awful "the only real sex is penis in vagina sex between two cishet people" message that annoys the heck out of me. At best it's offensive, at worst it's kind of dangerous.

The scene in the bed was to fool us into thinking that Michael was really going down on Jane when it was just a dream (with Rafael coming up from under the covers). The reason Jane wrote the sexy letter in Chapter 4 was b/c she didn't have a physical means for "making up" with Michael. Xo's advice to her was to "bang him with gusto". If Jane had a sexual means for doing that, even if it was non penetrative why bother with a letter? Why the freakout with Jonathan in S2b? Why was she surprised at the twins having nudes on their phone in Chapter 6? I could go on and on.

Michael's comment in 3.03 just brings up a bunch of continuity issues. So I'll just choose to think of it as a bad retcon. It keeps me from hating Jane and the show.

Granted it's not the first (or the last) offensive thing they've done, but it's the most annoying IMO.

OMG, I never realized that he said "caramel situation." That's much more hilarious than the "carnal situation" I thought he said!

Yeah there's no spinning how insensitive that was. What kind of guy doesn't know that after a girl's first time she expects cuddles and kisses? Not to mention that said girl is his wife and she has waited 25 years to have sex. I hope it was a deliberate choice by the writers. But I have zero faith in them. Who knows they might have thought it was hilarious and "realistic." If that's there version of realistic, they need to find a better class of guy in their real lives.

Pia - you made me watch Moondust again and I'm sucked back in! I love that video and song so much.

Here are a few of my favorite moments in addition to the ones mentioned already:
  • her first glowing heart for Rafael in the hallway of the Marbella where she can't stop herself from touching him
  • "I know ... it's not a date ... (sly grin)"
  • when he slept on the floor beside her during their baby crisis
  • "living on a prayer? are you sure you don't want to rethink that?"
  • "well played" in response to Jane talking Rafael into going to see Luisa at the insane asylum
  • last name negotiation at the hospital
  • the first time they met bobby the clown in the flashback
  • their breakup when she doubles over in pain. she loved him so much.
On another note, do you guys think they are setting up parallel storylines between Alba/her sister and Jane/cousin-who-will-date-Rafael? Could the cousin be Alba's sister's daughter? It might be interesting especially if we find out that Alba and her sister became estranged over Mateo. I might be getting mixed up since I haven't watched and am relying on episode descriptions.

Yeah, I agree with everything you say here. Although part of me thinks Jane made her bed and now needs to lie in it, literally, with her drip of a husband.

I'm curious about the cousin connection. I don't think it's to connect Jane and Rafael, they have Mateo for that. But I'm looking forward to jealous Jane (via recap).

IA, that having a wedding in S2 is a death sentence for a couple, but this show seems so smugly satisfied in "subverting", and boring us in the process.

I hope so. I'm always hoping that Jane's writing leads her back to Rafael. But who knows at this point.

It popped up when I was watching YouTube last night, and I ended up watching it several times.
