I disagree. Even Tia admitted that dragging out Clark/Lana is what made a lot of fans leave the show. By season 6 it was boring fans to death. Besides, why was it even necessary to prolong Clark and Lana when you have Chloe Sullivan? If the idea was to delay Clark/Lois until season 7 or 8, then why not just get Clark and Chloe together after season 5? That would be preferable to having Chloe get involved in a useless relationship with Jimmy and having Clark pine for Lana for a sixth excruciating season. It made his character look pathetic, like he never left high school.


More than that. Try an entire season, season 6 into season 7.

Yes, but only because the writers were making him hold himself back. As long as they considered Kristen the female lead, they didn't want her to take a back seat to Alison, or Erica, or anyone, which is NOT how you're supposed to write a television show.

I agree, but this is the same WB who wouldn't let Smallville use Bruce Wayne because they didn't want their film division to have to compete with a TV show, even though Smallville and the planned Bruce Wayne spinoff show (similar to Gotham) would have been prequels telling a totally different story. They weren't going by Superman rules, they were going by The WB rules, and if Kirsten was second billed in the credits after Tom, the network figured she's the female lead and proper storytelling doesn't matter.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer had to move Angel to his own show before they got her involved with Spike or anyone else, or before Angel could move on with Cordelia or someone else. Look at Dawson's Creek. They had Dawson obsessing over Joey forever, even when she was with Pacey. But you can't write Smallville like it's any other WB/CW show because the audience already knows how Clark and Lana's story ends from episode 1. The fact that Clark doesn't end up with Lana is already predetermined, which is what made Lana's storyline so frustrating to both fans and critics. After high school ended in season 4, the show would've been a lot more interesting if they focused more on Clark and Chloe, and Clark and Lois, since Lana really doesn't have much to do in Clark's story after high school.

He did love Lana, but for far too long and far more than he should've. Like I said, Lana was never the love of Clark's life in the comics and was never as important to him as the show made her out to be. I think they made the mistake of trying to make Clark and Lana like a typical WB show couple while forgetting that they were always a doomed couple from the start. Audiences don't want to spend time watching a story about a couple whose outcome is already predetermined. That gets boring after a while. By season 5, Chloe and Lois were far more important to Clark's story and far more interesting characters.
