On the hand holding ... it was nice, but I thought it was kind of funny that they justified it in the ep as some kind of physical need, that Simmons needed to be escorted around because she felt off balance due to gravity or oxygen or whatever. When I saw the pictures of the two of them before the ep, I assumed they were holding hands more for moral, emotional support. Interesting though that the only person who held her hand and escorted her around like that was Fitz.

I thought it was interesting too that Fitz, particularly at the beginning of the ep, was too fixated on her physical health, and was self-aware enough that she needed help with her mental health as well but he didn't know how to help. She'll recover physically relatively quickly, but it's going to be a long time before she's recovered mentally, and it'll be interesting to see how the two deal with that. I'm curious to see whether they'll still be holding hands once she is better physically.

Fitz was so adorable, he didn't expect anything from Jemma, he just wanted to be there for her

I actually think they made it look like the hand holding was done more for support and NOT as a physical need... I mean, we saw Simmons walking just fine when she got into the shower...The noise and the distractions bothered her. But I didn't see her struggling with actually walking as much.

And I didn't think he needed to hold her hand at the restaurant to be honest especially for any sort of physical help...I mean, the restaurant was empty. There was no light other than candles and no noise. So there was nothing to make her uncomfortable there. I think it has become a sort of second nature for them to hold hands. Also, from Fitz point of view, he has been separated from her for months...so perhaps holding her hand is also sort of comfort for him emotionally. Like a protective gesture...

I think she needs him near her. As we saw in the previous episode, she moved closer to sleep on his lap....so I feel like she needs the physical contact with him as a way to feel safe/secure and just to be around him. She easily could have just slept on the bed with him seating beside her...but she took the time to walk over to him and to touch him...to be as close to him as possible.

They looked so beautiful here. Both so gorgeous and mature. And the way he is holding her is amazing. And what I noticed is that they are also holding hands again in THIS particular moment. When he moves to hold her, she moves to him and they hold hands automatically in a way.

Some of us are human.

By the way, Luke Mitchell is like the biggest FitzSimmons shipper. He posted at least 3 separate tweets about them today. AND so did Ming/Chloe/Gregg...seems like all the cast members are loving them!

I think the hand holding was more supportive than anything else. The physical contact is like an assurance of safety, security and comfort for them both but for different reasons, if that makes sense.

It does make sense that they might hold hands for that reason, and you can infer that, but the stated reason in the ep had to do with her physical health. When they first appeared together in the lab holding hands, the first thing they talked about was that Jemma was still getting used to earth's lower gravity. And when they left the lab together, it was because Jemma claimed she felt disoriented due to "oxidative stress".

And within that scene when Jemma was startled a few times, she never reached out to Fitz for safety, in fact the only time they held hands was when Fitz reached out to her. And especially in that lab scene at the beginning, Fitz was focused on Jemma's physical health, that's mainly what he was talking with her about. I think at that point he hadn't fully appreciated how much being on that planet had affected her mental state. So from Fitz's point of view, at least for that scene, he was mostly holding her hand over concern for her health.

I mention all of this because I was actually surprised that in this ep, despite the way the last ep ended, we never saw any instances of Jemma seeking out Fitz for comfort. Not that she didn't find his presence comforting, but it was always him going to her.

As for what Fitz was feeling through the ep ... we know that he has very strong feelings for Jemma and was desperate to get her back, but compared to the last two eps he never showed any strong emotions in this ep. I was kind of surprised he didn't ever express how relieved he was to get her back, and the two times people brought up how big a deal it was that he saved her, Fitz shrugged it off. I get that at the moment this is about Jemma not him, and that whatever joy he feels getting her back is tempered by the fact that she's not okay, but again ... it wasn't quite what I was expecting.

I think to infer solely on the shower scene that she didn't have any need for physical support might be to look a bit too much into that one scene. It was really the most minor of things that threw Simmons' physical well-being completely out of whack in this episode

I'm sure that Simmons didn't mind the emotional support side of having Fitz there, but it didn't look to me like she remained physically stable long enough, except when in her bed to fully appreciate all the emotional support that the team is trying to pour her way.

I think it was both? We know she can handle walking on her own, but does Fitz? Also I got the feeling that the hand holding was just as much for Fitz's own comfort as Jemma's. Yes it was Fitz always going to her to offer comfort but he also seemed hyper attuned to her mental/emotional state. He didn't really give her much opportunity to seek him for comfort because he was usually already there.

Also, basically every scene with them in it had me -ing

Beautiful fan video.

From the reading the critics reviews for this episode, it seems a lot of them also think the hand holding was for more support/comfort rather than physical need. In my opinion, they held hands for BOTH of their own benefits. I'm sure Fitz doesn't want to leave her alone even for a second after only getting her back...and well, she feels safer when he is near...and holding her hand.

If you notice, they ALSO reached for each others' hands when they were seating at the restaurant, and he was holding her....He was already giving her full comfort...but she kind of leaned in for his hand too.

More lovely gifs here!

maybe there is

what else was i gonna do?

Again though, those are all just opinions. Whereas, for some reason, the writers felt a need to empasize in the dialog that Jemma was having physical problems during the scene where they first appeared holding hands.

I just thought it was unnecessary, instead they could have said nothing about it and everybody would just accept that it was for support or comfort or whatever. I wanted it to be about that, and the reason I'm pointing this out is that I thought it was weird for the writers to find a different reason to justify it.

And again, it will be interesting to see if they keep holding hands like that as she recovers physically. That's when we'll really know why they're doing it.

Could definetely be the case Rae

I guess future episodes will shine enough light upon how Simmons is feeling and what she is going through for us to be able to confirm or deny all of our pressing questions so far this season

Always happy to share the gifs.

Fan art is just phenomenal for them on tumblr. I'm always so impressed.

And the cast was honestly so adorable live tweeting their support for them. I haven't seen them do this for any of the other show pairings.

I'm in love with their scenes from episode 3....and I've lost count as to how many times I've re-watched them!
