I feel like the writers probably just put that in there to cause tension between Sherlock/Joan and Sherlock/Mycroft and I never felt like they had any real connection...

Exactly, which is really weird because the main relationships on the show have been perfectly crafted and have evolved smoothly. It is the only one I can't get behind!

The only explanation I could think of is Joan being drawn to him because he is Sherlock's brother, not that she thinks of Sherlock in the romantic sense, but because that aspect of Mycroft was interesting to her... Yeah I'm reaching

but otherwise I can't think of anything

I guess they could have bonded over 'knowing' Sherlock and sharing in that, although I am not quite convinced that Mycroft actually does understand Sherlock.

I don't think he does actually,I know he loves him and tries to protect him in his own way but he doesn't understand him at all.

I've been thinking about it and I think I know what bothers me with Mycroft/Joan: First, well it happened off-screen so it was a no choice in the matter kind of thing, Second, I suspect their relationship was just the trigger to Watson needing her space.

I suspect that you are right in that, her relationship with Mycroft did seem to be the thing that set her on to wanting her own space.

yes, I am curious as to whether they consider that relationship 'over' seeing as they broke up basically just because Mycroft had to leave. If Mycroft does come back, I wonder if they would try again?
