I am assuming, like the other recurring characters, that Rhys Ifans is too busy to appear right now, but will probably be back eventually.

I don't know if it's the actor or is it only me, but whenever I see Raza in some show (Spooks, Mistresses, Smash, Homeland, and now Elementary) he plays such a boring characters...

I'm not invested in his storyline and I wouldn't cry if he didn't come back, tbh.

that is the problem with getting big name guest stars, they can't really 'tie them down' with a contract because they don't know when they will need them so they end up having to slot them into episodes just because it is the only time the actor is free.

yeah, I don't really care about him either. I guess his only real purpose is to show that Joan is living a 'normal' life outside of her work, which is what she wanted. I am happy for him to just stay as an off screen character that they occasionally mention.

I'm totally okay with him not coming back too, when I think about Mycroft/Sherlock relationship in Sherlock though, I feel like it's too bad, it would have been another plus to the show since it's so great with characters and relationships... Usually.

I think they made a mistake casting someone like Rhys Ifans, who is quite high profile and only available for guest roles. I think what makes the relationship work in Sherlock is that Mycroft is a background character but he is constantly recurring and didn't just have a short character arc. Also, I feel like pairing him with Watson, in Elementary, sort of ruined what the main focus of his storyline should have been, his relationship with Sherlock.

^ EXACTLY!!! We didn't get the time to appreciate and understand the brothers relationship that they became a trio with Watson in between them.

yes, and by the time they got round to trying to develop Sherlock and Mycroft's relationship(after he found out that Mycroft was MI6) we had already developed a distaste for the character!
