Cow-tipping in YA's unaired pilot

YA's unaired pilot, shot in autumn 1999, ends with Krudski's proposal that Bella, Calhoun and he all celebrate his being allowed to remain at Rawley by going cow-tipping, and with Bella's explanation to Calhoun of what cow-tipping is. It's from 11:30 to 12:00 minutes into this clip.

One cannot really tip cows. "Cow-tipping" is a myth, a joke widely told to city folks by rural folks. See Cow tipping - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ending of the unaired pilot therefore seems intended to indicate that Krudski's "going to Rawley" is not real, either, to indicate that YA is Krudski's dream of reliving an ideal youth. This seems to have been present even in the unaired pilot, although it was done far better in YA as aired.

Bad news & good

There's good news and bad news about online access to the unaired pilot (UP) episode of YA.

First the bad news: I've had to remove from the IckyGrub channel at YouTube one of the three clips into which I'd cut the UP for upload on to YouTube. I had to do that in order to pre-empt copyright enforcement actions which, cumulatively, might result in closure of the channel. So now the middle third of the UP is missing.

Now the good news: I've uploaded a whole-episode clip of the UP on Adrive.com. For information about how to download it, go to "Rawley Revisited," the website to which my signature below offers a link. The whole-episode UP clip is an "avi" format file of about 350 kilobytes.

I've also expanded the "Exegesis" section of "Rawley Revisited" to include copies of all the commentaries appended to all the YA clips on the IckyGrub channel at YouTube, including the now-deleted middle third of the UP. My commentaries on the UP chiefly describe how the UP differs from the drama as aired.

Down, girl, down.

It's nowhere near so good as the aired episodes. Antin worked for a whole year to make the thing better than the unaired pilot. For me, there's only one thing in the UP that's not in aired YA 1 that I liked alot, and it's an old vaudeville comedy gag that Moennig gets to enact. You'll notice it.

But it is interesting and instructive if one is interested in trying to figure out what Antin was trying to do in YA, and how he came to do it. Especially interesting is the cow-tipping at the end.
-- Cow-tipping is not real, it's in the UP to clue you in that YA is all a dream.
-- And the anachronisms are already there -- the antique gas pumps and trucks were moved from Georgia in autumn 1999 to Maryland in summer 2000, which says a lot about how important they were to Antin. Of course, they too are signals that it's all a dream.
But the "it's a dream" signals in the series as aired are a lot richer and more varied and subtler. Cow-tipping, frankly, is kinda crude.

Good move, ladies. A separate thread for each episode rewatch is likely to draw more participants. Some of the things, rewatches of which are normally discussed on the "live rewatches" thread, are so distantly related to YA that it's interesting only to a few folks. Note the rather low number of views for that thread.

Anyhow, I'll start the rewatch now. But I don't have much to say that I haven't already said.

Sheida: try not to be too disappointed. Antin stated publicly in May 2000 that he didn't like a lot of things about the unaired pilot, and knew he had to make it better. He spent about nine months doing that. And he made it a great deal better. The main interest of watching the UP is to see how much he improved it, how much better the aired series is than the UP.
