That's what I find so amazing. I mean yeah there have been moments when Emma has shown emotion (thinking Henry died, her fight in the woods with August) but those are rare moments.

And when she called her mom those walls were still down and she was broken. She was practically hyperventalating because of it.

No one has ever really managed to break Emma's walls except for Neal because he's the first person she let all the way in.

Exactly.

I'm almost positive that Neal was her first love, and you never forget something of that nature.
Something that powerful stays with you.
Then you need to factor in that she has a child with him....yeah, that adds so much more into everything.

Letting Neal in was a huge thing for Emma, and when Neal left Emma's walls went up. It explains why she's so guarded and doesn't want to let love in.

I'm sure it still hurts her....
that when she saw Neal it felt like her heart was breaking all over again considering she hadn't seen him in so many years.

Yeah, she was like Katie in Safe Haven, building walls up to sequester her past, keeping it out of anyone's reach. When she called Snow to talk about it, she was panicked and hyperventilating, and neither of which was resulted by another sprint. This is fate, beyond her will to run away from. Among millions of men in US, Neal, one of a few from her land, happened to be her first love. When she tried to start over by hooking up with Graham, Regina prevented them from going further as she sent him to grave. There were just too many stars in alignment.
