I've seen the movie and This Is England '86. Haven't seen This is England '88 yet though. It's good, you should definitely check it out.

I recommend the film for sure and also enjoyed both series. I like some of Shane Meadows other work as well though.

I haven't ordered the DVD yet. I do want to see the BTS stuff too. It's just that the New Year has kicked off with several possible huge financial outgoings that I didn't expect. So I am holding off on stuff like that.

I'm 100% sure that Joe is genuine. He seemed it to me when I met him too and people who know him say that he is. One of his co stars said that he has no "side" to him at all - he is just always very candid. Probably too open sometimes, I think. Maybe part of his ADHD. It's why his publicist has to bite her nails whenever he gives interviews...

In fact he gives the impression of being a simple person, just what he seems to be .. But I certainly wouldn't want to be his publicist

I don't know if simple is the right word. I think he's actually an emotional and intelligent guy. He likes to have a laugh, but what I meant is that he will just open up emotionally to strangers. He's not very guarded and just tends to say what he thinks or feels.

He came across as a little bit vulnerable to me tbh. But that goes along with this loud jokey side. I guess he is a bit like Rudy there...

I read an interview with his mum once and she said he uses humour to mask his inadaquecies

He comes across very friendly and genuine in interviews. I've never met him though ut I've never heard a bad thing said by him, so.

I finally bought S3 on dvd and you're right, Joe is very funny behind the scenes. He'd be a pain in the neck if you were having a bad day though.

I noticed something in ep 1 with Rudy though. Maybe cos I watched on my laptop. I'd noticed before that he has lots of things to do with traveling in his room. A globe, map pillow, lots and lots of postcards etc. I also knew that Other Rudy put something in his bag before he was about to leave for Wales. I thought it was the photo of Alisha. It wasn't - it was a postcard from a motel in Holland. It must be supposed to mean something to Rudy for them to have him pack it. It's a dull postcard, not a sexy one. Is he a keen backpacker, or have his parents left him some time ago to go traveling the world? He mentioned going to stop at their place in ep 4, but that was an alternate world. I wondered if it might come up in S4.

I'm also curious as to what project Joe was auditioning for that was mentioned in the Guardian article and that radio interview. He seemed excited and said Stephen Graham was in it, but he couldn't say more because he might not get it anyway. I'd love if it was Boardwalk Empire, but I can't see that. I'd like to see him and Stephen on screen again in something though. Even though we've had TIE sequels, they've shared no screentime since halfway through the first film.

I've found the article that had the quote from his mum.

Typical... I was looking for that for a while some time ago and could not find it. I wasn't looking for it or anything like it today and it popped up on google.

It's from when he was 17: Boy who grew up on the Street (From Lancashire Telegraph)

I wonder what S4 will be like for him? It's already grim to lose so many beloved characters. It felt like Joe/Rudy won fans last year though. He got a lot of hate to start with and then won a lot of people over. Now it's playing on Hulu, it seems like all the hate is back.

A lot of it is nasty shallowness too. I wouldn't mind if it were intelligent criticism.

I never hated him, I decided to keep an open mind and boy was I pleasantly surprised. I loved Rudy this season.
