Comments: Jackie is a complex character, which is a huge reason I enjoy writing her so much. She can be generous as well as selfish. Self-aware and self-deluded. Self-sacrificing and betraying, and these these seeming contradictions can exist in a person -- because her generosity is in certain areas, as is her selfishness. Her self-awareness doesn’t preclude her from having blind spots. As she grew (i.e. her romantic relationship with Hyde inspired her to grow and change), she lost that reflex to betray others to save herself -- because she finally had someone who treated her sacredly (when written consistently) instead of like an object to be used at one’s leisure (i.e. Kelso).

My preferred characterization of Jackie is the one full of insight (same with Fez and Hyde, as readers of Those ‘70s Comics and my fanfic likely recognize).

Note that Jackie’s heart beats faster in its last three panels than it does in its first two panels.

Comments: Jackie’s heart knows better than Jackie’s mind right now. Jackie is trying to rationalize her reasons for wanting Hyde to do well at the SATs, but the true answer is clear.

I accidentally left a capital E in Eric’s name in one panel. I would’ve corrected it, but since this is a .gif, that would take more work and time than just fixing a letter on a static comic. So in honor of Jackie’s faulty logic in this comic, I leave the text imperfect, as well (which is not the actual reason since I stated the actual reason above. And that’s how that works).

Comments: Eric’s dumbassery is fun to write and draw. Not the sexist dumbassery that crops up from time to time on the show but the silly mistakes he makes. The comics sometimes depict Eric as, well, cartoonish. But the show itself veers into that territory with him at times, especially during season 7. Certain traits of his are exaggerated (e.g., Eric being scared of sports balls; Eric trying to catch butterflies, tossing the whole net a them and being afraid he “made them mad,” etc.)

That canon-y cartoonishness lets me get extra silly and surreal with his character and even put meta dialogue in his mouth where he’s aware he’s in a comics series and that time works differently in Point Place.

Comments: By admitting Hyde has her heart, Jackie is admitting that she loves him. This is moment on the show can be considered her first, “I love you,” instead of the one in “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You” (5x14). The fact Hyde doesn’t react to Jackie’s admission in the episode is a serious omission and a failure in the writing.

This scene is a big character moment for Jackie and Hyde both, but the episode focuses on Jackie wanting Hyde to be rich without exploring the why of that desire beyond her being “accustomed to a certain lifestyle”. Yesterday’s classic comic delved into the true why, and real!Hyde was smart enough to understand Jackie’s admission of love,

If I were writing the season 5 comics today, the plot of Jackie and Hyde’s arc would’ve gone even differently than it already does in Those ‘70s Comics. Hyde’s insecurity about Jackie’s romantic feelings for him vs. Kelso would’ve had this moment to ground him in the truth and, perhaps, make him more confused -- confused enough not to break with Jackie but to question her closely. They might’ve fought, stopped talking (without ending the relationship), and in the end Jackie would’ve confessed directly, “I love you,” as she does in “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You”.
