There's really no reason to be shy because "the only person you need permission from ... is yourself."

:Rules: We welcome all new fans, old fans, multi-shippers, and Dy/K-curious posters. However, bashing of any kind/posting on this thread as a means to collect evidence against our couple for another will not be accepted. Please read the official board rules for clarification on this and other matters, such as staying on topic and not double-posting. Normal criticism from those who love Dylan and Kelly together is of course an exception. We know they aren't infallible, but we love them. And they loved each other.

Weronika;
Your lover is your best friend, the person with whom you confide all your secrets and dreams. It’s a love that can lift you up and make you the best version of yourself. Dylan and Kelly are soulmates and lovers. He'll always have a piece of her soul. And Kelly will always be the love of his life.

Katherine;
When Dylan McKay and Kelly Taylor finally got together, I was the happiest teeny-bopper on earth! Even before the third season, I just knew that Dylan had a thing for Kelly and vice versa. Maybe it was the way they looked at each other in the hallways or just the incredible chemistry that Luke and Jennie had on the show. Whatever it was, I was hooked. Imagine my surprise and elation when Kelly revealed that she and Dylan had had a flirtation prior to the Walshes moving to Beverly Hills. I knew it hadn’t just been my fertile, adolescent, Harlequin Romance-induced imagination! And when the writers decided to hook them up in what I now affectionately dub as “The Summer of Love”, all was right in my teenage world again.

In the immortal words of Steve Sanders, Dylan and Kelly didn’t fit yet somehow they did fit. She started out as a superficial snob who only seemed to care about keeping up appearances and material things, while he was the quintessential poor little rich boy, an existentialist at a very young age who, ironically, didn’t care much for his wealthy, Beverly Hills trappings.

If it hadn’t been for their relationships with Brandon and Brenda, I don’t think that Dylan and Kelly would have fully learned to appreciate what they had with each other. They learned to accept who they were, what they had, and where they came from. And as hard as they tried to deny their connection by falling for other people, dating other people, even marrying other people, it was inevitable that they would end up together in the end. People say that opposites attract, but not in this case. Dylan and Kelly are two halves of one whole. All those years of searching ... little did they know that what they were searching for was right underneath their nose.

Rinaye;
It was 1990 when I first indulged on the show that is Beverly Hills 90210. That wouldn’t seem strange except … I was only about two years old at the time. I didn’t remember too much of the show, having the short attention span of a toddler, but oddly enough I did remember one event particular: the unification of Dylan McKay and Kelly Taylor.

As the show progressed, I watched, not fully understanding the depth of the young adult drama. When I came of age, I became more interested in understanding the show and the couple that was Kelly and Dylan. I began tuning in on marathons of reruns as well as the final season of the series. Episode after episode, I found myself becoming more captivated by them. I soon noticed an amazing love story was unfolding before my eyes.

Though I initially saw their summer affair as careless, I must admit it was undeniably romantic. I understood the situation the two were in and recognized how strong their feelings actually were. Over time, the couple experienced life and love. Most times, they were apart. But even when they weren’t together, the underlying emotions between them remained untouched. Dylan and Kelly had an unbreakable bond founded on friendship, passion and, most of all, love. It was believable because of the history they shared. They grew up together and ultimately grew in love. If you look beyond the surface, you can see the classic love story: boy meets girl, boy is torn between two, and finally boy and girl fall in love.

That was a lot to read. Why not take a music break?

S1 DVD Interviews w/ Luke Perry and Jennie Garth:

LP on Dylan: “He has a very strong sense of himself. […] Everyone thinks that when you’re a senior in high school, ‘That’s it, man. This is your last chance. You gotta …’ Everything that happens to you your senior year defines you as a person. That’s not true, and I think that my boy’s real aware of that. And I think that’s important. I think that allows him to look deeper into people, right away, and see them for WHO they are, not WHAT they are and what status symbol they represent in school. And thusly, that’s one of the things that separates him from people. He sees how people are separated from each other … whether they do or not.”

JG on Kelly: “She’s very complex. She has a lot of insecurities that deal with if people like her and whether or not she’s strong enough to handle everything that’s going on in her life. […] She tries to keep herself looking cool and looking together for everyone else’s benefit. But when she goes home, it’s her quiet time and she really tries to deal with her feelings.”

LP: “A lot of people tune in and they look at the title – it’s ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’. They think it’s all glamour and flash, you know? Cause we have beautiful girls like Jennie on the show. They think that. And that’s true – to some extent. But also, we get down and we look and we see what’s going on, and we try to address it. We want to raise the questions.”

S3 DVD Commentary w/ Charles and Karen Rosin:

CR: “It wasn’t the reason to go forward with this [making Dy/K a couple], of course. The reason was, though, um … Luke Perry came into my office. I always made it at the end of the season that the actors could come and tell me what they like or didn’t like, and he said, ‘Can’t I start doing stuff with [Jennie]?’ […] So I remember calling in Steve [Wasserman] and Jessica [Klein] and said, ‘Can we make this work? Can we change it up?’ And Steve Wasserman, who unfortunately has passed away, had, you know, great enthusiasm and just went, ‘YES! Let’s do it!’”

(Re: Dy/K talking at the Peach Pit in “Home and Away”)

CR: “And this is a beautiful – the theme of the abandoned father. And this was – this was also a third year episode called ‘Senior Poll’, written by Chip Johannessen, who has gone on to do some really terrific shows.”
KR: “He was a very good writer.”
CR: “He did the ‘Princeton Boys to Men’, he did the dance with the High School violence, and of course that wonderful scene.”

(Re: Dy/K in the pool, “Back In the High Life”)

CR: “Maybe the most – the sexiest scene we ever did.”

(Re: Dy/K hugging at Graduation, right after she sees her father, “Commencement”)

KR: “You always appreciated it when we could, um, sort of illuminate the underlying psychological make-up of a character without …”
CR: “Hitting it on the head.”
KR: “Yeah.”

E! True Hollywood Story, 2001:

Narrator, 52 min. in: “As in the previous year, FOX execs programmed new episodes of 90210 during the Summer of 1992. The plan kept viewers hooked on the kid’s vacation misadventures, including Brenda and Donna’s trip to Paris. But the juiciest news was that while Brenda had a fling in Europe, her on-again off-again sweetheart, Dylan, and best friend, Kelly, finally gave into temptation.”

TV Guide, 10/04/92, p.10:

“Cheers to the zip returning to one of TV’s better known zip codes, Beverly Hills, 90210. While the new season has spawned a haphazard host of 90210 knockoffs, none can compare to the original, now in its third year. Sure, the Fox hour went through some tepid times last season (the terrible twos), but now the tempest is back in the teen-pot, thanks mostly to the stormy romance between Dylan (Luke Perry) and Kelly (Jennie Garth).”

TV Guide, ‘Jennie Garth: From the Heart’, 4/08/95, Mary Murphy, p.13:

“We have a dynamic relationship. Either we get along famously or we hate each other’s guts. […] Today it was up and down: ‘I hate you’. ‘I love you’. ‘I hate you’.”

“Off-camera, Garth says that Perry is possessive of her attention. ‘Our relationship is stormy, to say the least’, she says. ‘Luke doesn’t like it when I do scenes with Jason. It’s that ego thing.’”

“He’s wonderful. Once you are kissing Luke (Perry, character Dylan), it is all you can think about.”

Sassy Magazine, 'Jennie Garth Rebuffed My Rice Krispies Advances', 4/?/95, p.44:

"I told her she and Luke seem to have really good chemistry. 'And we know it. And his girlfriend knows it and my boyfriend knows it. But we work together, you know ...'"

Our Favorite Moments, 1998:

JG: “I love working with Luke. He and I are like buddies."

Reunion Special, 2003:

LP: “Jennie and I have sent each other to the hospital on a fairly regular basis. And this is off-camera. Um … (Jennie laughs) I wanted to mention that. I ran her over with a jet-ski once. I hit her in the head, knocked her unconscious. Out, in the water, a bodyguard dove in, fished around … pulled Jennie up like a drowned cat. Paramedics came, the whole deal. She sprayed Binaca in my eye one time (Jennie laughs). … There were some bumps and bruises. I knocked her down. Again, someone had to go to the emergency room … “

LP: “And Jennie and I were in the swimming pool on top of the Bel Age Hotel, and we were supposed to be swimming and talking and kissing. I remember us being in the swimming pool and all the crew had on winter coats. So what I was doing was trying to hold her close to me, and stay, ya know, really warm (Jennie playfully smacks his arm), and … and, um …

JG: “What are you saying?!”

LP: “I’m just saying, it - that I’m warmer when you’re close to me than I am when you’re not (he playfully hugs her) [...]."

LP: “We were getting invited to the White House. Um, you know, crazy stuff. Fidel Castro got a satellite dish cause he had a crush on Jen …” (she playfully hits him).

OK! Magazine Blog for 'Dancing With The Stars', 10/23/07:

JG: “I would do anything for Tori and she would do anything for me in a heartbeat. You don’t have that bond with people very often. I have that with Tori and Luke Perry and Ian Ziering. Those are the people that I grew up with – they’re my soul siblings.”

New York Times, ‘Thank You, ZIP Code of My Dreams, For an Emotion-Packed Decade’, 5/?/00, Eleni N. Gage:

“From ‘Peyton Place’ to ‘Passions’, the tradition of soap opera is to have teenage conflicts rooted in class issues. But the entire 90210 gang, with the exception of the intellectual Andrea, was incredibly wealthy, making wrong-side-of-the-tracks issues moot. Dylan didn’t choose Kelly over Brenda because she had fancier clothes or a cabana closer to the sea at the beach club, but because they had sympatico psyches [...] I realize that 90210 is fictional, but occasionally I forget. A few weeks ago, Dylan said to Kelly, “This is the second time I’ve seen you in a wedding dress to marry a man who isn’t me.” Tears sprang to my eyes. I declared, ‘I want them to be together so much that I’d rather have them get married than meet my own soulmate.’ (A friend of mine instantly commanded, ‘Take it back.’)”

The View, 2000:

Lisa Ling: “So, I have to ask you – are Kelly and Dylan going to be reunited for the final episode?”
JG: “Yeah. It’s good. It’s kind of like a ‘full circle’ sort of thing where they come all this way and finally find their way back to each other.”
Lisa Ling: “Yay!”

Star, ‘90210 Over and Out’, 4/18/00, Stephen Viens:

“But even that is nothing compared to the last scene. Dylan and Kelly resolve their love triangle and commit to each other as they dance together at the wedding party. The last words ever spoken on the show will be when he asks her to dance, adding that if she wanted to wait she could wait. “I don’t want to. Not anymore”, Kelly replies as the couple slowly dance around the floor to their song, leaving no doubt that they’ve finally gotten together forever.”

Oh, and Court for freakout support, lol. Katherine for bringing over that dancing GIF and inspiring a soon-to-be 3-step rhythm to the quotage. Jane for making a tagline on the first main app. banner which became a somewhat modified tagline for the thread. Special thanks to Jaime and Bee for being with the Dy/K thread from the beginning, even before we had a board, and keeping my schmaltz intact.

The dialogue from the S10 'storage room' scene on one of the Flashback arts is from a scene in the following episode, not shown. Similar liberties were taken with the S5 Flashback scene in which Dylan shows up at Kelly's door and they kiss.

Does this mean we have to stop talking about the groping and the public displays of affection?

What were you guys doing in the last thread? I'm a' go find out.

And here's to reposting the paperback transcript that January made so that my comments don't seem out of nowhere.

Quote:
Dylan had a long evening ahead, and it would give him an opportunity to do a lot of thinking.
Generally he was an early riser because he didn't want to miss the good waves. His sleeping habits sometimes made it tough to stay up late, which normally didn't matter because he wasn't much of a party animal anyway. But this entire Kelly thing had upset his balance more than he pretended, and he needed to speak with Brenda, to hear her voice. Because of the time difference, he's probably have the best luck catching her around midnight, Beverly Hills time.
His present fixation on Kelly wasn't a case of loving the girl he was near when the girl he loved wasn't near. Kelly was as special in her own way as Brenda. Dylan understood that Brenda could rightfully expect a certain amount of loyalty - no question. He just didn't know if he was strong enough to resist a temptation as strong as Kelly Taylor. He hoped that hearing Brenda's voice would strengthen his resolve to be faithful, to remind him that she was a real person; he also needed to be reassured that she hadn't run off with some french dude.
He forced himself to wait until exactly midnight so he wouldn't get Brenda out of bed, and then he punched in the long international phone number of the Hotel Casanova. He had to do it twice because he messed up in the middle the first time. An older woman answered the phone - probably the house mother - and in his rusty French, Dylan asked to speak with Brenda Walsh.
He was concentrating so strongly on hearing Brenda's voice that he was surprised when Donna came on the line. His heart sank. This was more than a social call. Hearing Brenda's voice right now was necessary if he was going to get a grip on himself. He and Donna exchanged pleasantries in French and then he asked where Brenda was.
"She went, er, sight-seeing," Donna told him.
"Bright and early, huh? You didn't go?"
"No. I'm going shopping."
Some things never change, Dylan thought, and smiled. "Who'd she go with?"
There was a moment of silence, and while he listened to transoceanic static Dylan wondered why that was such a difficult question.
"She, ah, left here alone," Donna assured him.
Dylan had the feeling that he wasn't getting the whole story, but maybe it was difficult to explain an entire summer in a sentence.
"I just kind of wanted to hear her voice right now," he admitted.
"I'll tell her you called."
"No, don't, okay? She'll just want to call me back, and I'll probably be asleep." Or out with Kelly. Or who knew what? "How's she doing?" Dylan asked, thinking about suave French dudes.
"Great. But I know she's really looking forward to going home."
"Yeah, me, too." He and Donna said their goodbyes, and after hanging up, Dylan sat with his hand on the receiver. Brenda wasn't required to sit around waiting for his call, and going sight-seeing did not reveal a flaw in her character. But as far as Dylan was concerned, her absence did make his life a whole lot more difficult.
The next day he went to the beach club. He didn't intend to hunt for Kelly, but deep down he knew that she was likely to be there, and they were likely to run into each other.
He was walking casually across the tanning deck when he saw her. She was reading Cosmo and hadn't seen him. He could just pass her by, and no one the wiser. But he suddenly had a wonderful idea, and an overwhelming urge to share it with someone. Without considering his actions further, he went to Kelly and put out his hand. "Come on, girl. I know a better way to spend the day than toasting in the sun."
She wouldn't go with him at first, but he joked and kept at her until she couldn't help laughing, and she could no longer refuse him.
Despite her many questions, he would not tell her what he had in mind. "Just pretend you're being abducted by a UFO," he suggested.
They drove a few miles up the beach, and when they got to Paradise Cove, Dylan rented a wetbike, a sort of motorized scooter for the water. At first Kelly was dubious about the safety of riding on the thing, but Dylan demonstrated, and soon she couldn't wait to get aboard. She wrapped her arms around Dylan's waist and they were off. They swooped up and down the bay, throwing a great plume of spray behind them. Kelly held on to him tightly and shrieked with delight into his ear.
"Faster," she cried. He went faster.
Frankly, the speed and the water and the physical contact, even the vibration of the wetbike, excited Dylan sexually. After they rode up onto the beach and began to towel off, he still pulsated with just being alive. Kelly was one good-looking woman, and she had the same taste for adventure that he had. She could not stop talking about how good riding the wetbike made her feel.
"Anytime you want to do it again, let me know," Dylan said. He looked around for the jug of hot coffee he'd brought along.
Kelly threw her towel out flat and sat down on it. "Aren't you forgetting one thing?" she asked as she gratefully accepted a cup of coffee from him. "We're both going to turn into pumpkins in a few days."
"Brenda, yeah." The truth was that he had forgotten about Brenda for a moment out there on the water. But now she was back, once again a third presence at their little party. He dropped down next to Kelly with his own coffee and shook his head. "But we're not doing anything wrong. We just had fun. I like having fun with you. Don't you like having fun with me?" He knew he was evading the issue, but part of him had grown not to care anymore.
"You're crazy," she said.
"I've been accused of worse," Dylan said. He tickled her ribs, and she playfully slapped his hand.
But they stayed on the beach for a long time, just talking. On the drive home Dylan couldn't remember all they'd talked about, but he knew he was getting dangerously close to this woman.

******

Since the wetbike episode, Kelly found herself seeing Dylan more frequently. She hadn't made a conscious decision that seeing him would be all right, she just kinda sorta fell into it. Of course Brenda was still a factor, so they didn't kiss much. But just being near Dylan was a pleasure. It was enough. It would have to do.
Dylan drove her to the beach club one morning and they found Steve in his car listening to David's music on his stereo. It was so loud, Kelly could hear it from the other end of the parking lot. The amazing thing was that Steve seemed to be so impressed with David's music that he didn't believe it was David's music. Steve made her and Dylan promise not to say anything to David about his opinion of the tape, and then drove off in a big hurry.
"Somebody here is crazy," Kelly said.
"Excuse me?" Dylan said as he reamed out one ear with a finger. "I seem to have gone a little deaf."
They both laughed and went to the Taylor-Silver cabana. Kelly was pleased to see that nobody was home. While she complained about how dry her skin became in the summer and smoothed aloe on her arms, Dylan went to the bathroom. The aloe was cool, and she always liked the cucumbery smell. When Dylan emerged, he came up behind Kelly and helped her spread aloe on spots she could not reach. His hands felt good on her shoulders and back; she closed her eyes and relaxed into him.
While he rubbed, Dylan invited her to spend the night with him at Paradise Cove, the place where they had such a wonderful time on the wetbike. "Two sleeping bags," he promised. "No fooling around."
Kelly knew if Dylan promised there would be no fooling around, there would be none. "Then why bother?" she asked impishly. Leading him on seemed like such an easy thing to do.
He laughed as he continued his massage. "It's beautiful up there. Far enough away from the city lights and the smog that you can see shooting stars."
"Stop it," Kelly pleaded. "You're tempting me."
"Then come," Dylan encouraged. "We'll have a chance to talk. Maybe we can figure out what we've been doing the past few weeks."
"I know what we've been doing. That's why I'm not coming."
"You'll miss out on my cooking. My hot dogs are legendary."
"I bet they are," Kelly said, and then indicated a spot he'd missed with the aloe. Instead of rubbing it with cream, Dylan kissed the spot.
Kelly was startled but not displeased. "You are so bad," she said, not very convincing at being grumpy.
They were standing with Dylan's lips on her shoulder when the door suddenly opened and David walked in. His eyes got big, and he immediately backed out, enormously embarrassed.
Kelly knew that David could not help but get the wrong impression. "Wait, David," she cried. "It's not what you think!" While she ran to the door it struck her that this situation was exactly like the time she'd caught David with Nikki. She wished she had been more sympathetic.
She was too late to catch David. She turned to Dylan and shut the door with her back. Despite what she had called, she knew the situation was exactly as David perceived it. "We can't go on like this," she said sadly. Her own embarrassment brought back all her guilt at playing around with Dylan while Brenda was in Paris. "We're being stupid," she went on. "And somebody's going to get hurt."
Dylan didn't say anything, but he looked chastised, a guy whose own guilt had come home to roost at last.
She asked him to take her home, and he did. They didn't kiss, they didn't touch, they barely spoke, though the silence made both of them uncomfortable. Kelly didn't think David would tell anybody what he'd seen - he'd been too horrified. Her only worry was that they had already gone too far for her or Dylan to act normal when Brenda returned.
Later she was in her room reading - or at least staring at pages - when David came in, looking anxious. She guessed that he wanted to talk about what he's seen in the cabana that afternoon, a subject that Kelly felt needed to be cleared up anyway. But he wouldn't let her explain. He just kept promising that her secret was safe with him.
Kelly finally managed to get a word in. "There is no secret, David," she said with exasperation. "He was just putting lotion on my back."
"Whatever," David said. He looked around as if he feared someone might be overhearing them, and it occurred to Kelly that David was here not for her benefit, but for his own. He wanted something in exchange for his silence.
"What?" Kelly asked.
"I'd like to propose a deal," David said. "I won't tell Brenda what 'didn't happen' between you and Dylan if you don't tell Donna what 'didn't happen' between me and Nikki."
Kelly could not help being amused by David's offer. Apparently he had noticed the same parallels in their situations as she had.
Kelly's smile appeared to distress David, so she stopped. "It's a deal," she said. She remembered something else that had happened that afternoon, and told David about meeting Steve.
David seemed very pleased that Steve liked his music, though she could not understand why. He explained that Steve and his mom had important connections. "They'll help me get a record deal."
"Yeah right." Kelly was relieved that the subject of illicit affairs had been cleared up, and they were back to something Kelly felt confident about - hating David's music.

Going back might be a bad idea, Mel. It's stuff like this....

And our thoughts about such moments. All very sophisticated, of course.

Oh, lord. Don't make me regret reposting that. And Alexis, there were several more excerpts from the books in that last thread. You know ... before Dylan and Kelly got in the water. All about their feelings. Feelings, people.

If I don't go and save them to a word doc now, I never will. I have to regrettably ask you, Jac, to please repost the Casablanca comparison. Don't remember the thread anymore.
