It was too dark to really be a "teen" show, which was definitely an issue in the third season on the CW.

I think he was fairly fond of Teddy Dunn (who by all reports is a nice guy) and that also colored his inability to see what the fans were seeing re : the problems with the character and his treatment of Veronica.

I think part of what saved us with Duncan is that Rob always had him as the back-up killer of Lilly if Aaron got leaked, with the twist that he didn't do it in a fit of rage but he knew what he was doing, and so there was some part of Rob that never full-on went "Duncan is the hero."

I do wonder if Duncan would stayed around if he was played by someone else

Hard to say. Duncan could have been an interesting characters if it had been acknowledged how ****ed up he was, and if he'd been played by a better actor. There is no way, when it comes to the script, for him to have ever been a good choice for Veronica. Too much water under that bridge. But he could have had another place.
