I still have a hard time with the whole he made it up because she is better without him theory. If he was going to do that I think he would have done it when she asked where he was all night. I don't see him making up an excuse to make her think things were fine and then throwing that at her later if all along he thought it was better for them to break up. I also don't see him begging for forgiveness if he was just making it up. I also think he would say he didn't remember if he really didn't remember even if he thought he did cheat.

So that doesn't fit with him being confused about people being mad at him... does it? Or did I let my mind fill in the blanks?

Off to go rewatch a few. Pray for me.
on re-watch i have gathered that he did not really admit to cheating but the dialogue made Zoe & us the audience believe that he was talking about cheating. but then again i am choosing to be very literal about what was said and treating it like fine print to bring me to a happy place

I don't know guys I think they are both talking about cheating at the bench scene. When Wade first starts talking he brings up when Zoe asks him about leaving the bar with a girl the night before and where he was all night. Then he says he was in denial and didn't want to believe it himself. I really think he was directly referencing leaving with the girl. What exactly happened with them I don't know, maybe it isn't as bad as we and Zoe think but I do think something happened with that girl. I think Wade believes something happened between him and that girl.

Yeah, the logical part of my brain keeps telling me all of the above, which is why I've already accepted. And I don't want to poke holes in the theory to try to burst anyone's bubble. Rather, I feel like if we try to poke holes in theories, we might, just might come up with one that has no holes. Truthfully. I just keep thinking one of these times, there will be a theory that fits with the sides we know and works with what we just saw.

But...

I don't like the dialogue on the bench. There is way too much ambiguity. Not trying to spin it. It is what it is.

When they leave the church they think they are on the same page. He admits to doing a stupid "thing". "It" meant nothing to him. He wanted to pretend "it" didn't happen. He couldn't even admit "it" to himself. "That" would be the one thing she couldn't forgive.

Why doesn't he say once "she". No granted the other pronouns work too.

And I'm not saying he isn't talking about cheating because yes it certainly sounds like it. And the demeanor is there. And as I said before I thought that he believed he cheated.

I just wish once they came right out and said that in 216 if that is what happened and they don't. Now in 217 someone does call him a cheater.

I don't like it either, it allows people to see what they want to see. Too many possibilities. But I am going with expecting the worst and hoping for the best.

I know. I hadn't watched the scenes since people had started to get my hopes up. Then I watched the mvid that was posted in the ZW thread with that exact line. It's the one that made me believe he cheated again. Or at least truly believes he did. Because at first I thought he was too calm about it all earlier in the episode. He seemed sad, but it was more like he did something similar to sabotage the loan for his bar, and not that he cheated. But that one line explains the odd demeanor. He was still in denial himself.

I want to be wrong, and I want to be convinced that I am wrong. It just feels so inevitable at this point. I still find it odd (though I'm thankful for it regardless) that they chose to show us nothing from that night, and that they kept a lot of things so vague and open to interpretation. Truthfully, it makes it all a little easier for me if he did cheat, because then I don't have to bleach my brain with that image.

That line along with the intense emotion and the pleading for forgiveness leave little room for what it could be if it isn't cheating. Plus the whole line about it meant nothing to him. How else have you ever heard someone say that line when it wasn't referring to cheating? It is a classic thing people say.

Exactly! It is like they are really trying to make us believe that he cheated but at the end of the day he NEVER said "I cheated on you" or "I slept with some random girl". I think this could be the key for the plot twist. And right now writers could be watching us here (freaking out about all of this) and thinking: what a great troll was that!

I'm done with looking at this stuff. It will be what it is come next week. I still don't think everything adds up. I'm just literally exhausted trying to figure it out.

I just wish that they made it as cut and dry as saying the word cheated. Or she or something. Or had Zoe ask who she was. Anything. And yet yes that scene on the bench very much makes you think that Wade is talking about cheating or at least believes he cheated.

And still the rest of this just doesn't make any sense.

I can't get why she is walking over to his porch in 218 to talk to him. I don't get why Lavon is getting love life advice from Wade regarding Ruby in 218. None of that makes any sense if they believe he cheated.

Also why have the whole town crap on him in 217? Isn't the way he felt at the end of 216 enought? Seriously we are going to have the whole town and Lavon crap on him and call him a disappointment? What he wasn't low enough in 216?

I think that no matter what happens next week we are never going to feel it adds up. Because whether he cheated or whether it is some other lame misunderstanding that doesn't make sense, nothing will fit completely.

This is how I'm interpreting the bench scene. It could be a MAJOR misunderstanding. I don't care if the writers did this to us coz it's sweeps but the alternative, of Wade cheating, is much worse. It could also be consistent with the coming out of the bathroom scene in which I believe what Wade said to Zoe then. Now the breakfast scene, where I started to get worried that he cheated, it could be that he was having doubts about "not being good enough" for Zoe. Ergo, the sad face. Then when he said he's best man & how it was kinda romantic to be walking down the aisle with Zoe, if he really cheated, that was too mean for me for him to have passed a guilty conscience that fast. Then the vows, maybe Wade was feeling bad about the "open & honest" part since that's when they focused the camera on him, and not about the "faithful partner" part since that's when they focused Zoe.

Gosh, I feel like I'm back in school taking law classes.

I know, and yet, having only rewatched that bench scene over and over again, looking for a sign, I hadn't really rewatched the earlier scenes. I just got done watching the first scene with Zoe at her place, and George asking him about it, and he so does not act like a person who cheated. He looks like a guy who knows he was a bit of an idiot, but he's so non-chalant, and he doesn't seem like he's even that much in denial. Maybe they wrote it that way to service a plot point, so I get that, but it's the weirdest thing.

Also I honestly can't get over the ambiguity from last week and even for a lot of this week. The fact that they don't show anything other than him leaving the bar with her remains weird. I'm grateful for it, but it's weird. Most shows want to have some reason to show that sex scene and the guy feeling guilty afterward. I honestly cannot think of one show that didn't show any of the cheating. The closest I've seen is getting drunk and waking up in bed with a woman and not knowing. But just outright not showing it?

It's just strange.

Actually during the vows it was the open and honest part that I did figure they were talking about. I figured that he wanted to come clean to her about whatever he felt he needed to.

It isn't even them not showing anything. It is the total lack of actually saying it that is bothering me. The word cheat or cheater isn't said until 217.

I'm betting he did something else not even related to cheating. What I don't know, but I do think it is related to LA.

Right before Tansy punches him he says "What for?" Now if the guy cheated he'd know why he was getting punched.

In the sides for 217 so this isn't speculation, when Wade is around Lavon getting ready to do the casino stuff, Wade senses that Lavon is pissy with him. The sides specifically say that Wade senses he is in the doghouse. He also tries joking with Lavon. And then gives up when he senses he is in the doghouse.

Again this is in the sides. After that he is at the table collecting the entrance fees. That is when the townspeople come up to him and call him a cheater. That is when he excuses himself to go and take a potty break.

I am betting he has no idea Zoe broke up with him because she thinks he cheated. And when he takes the potty break he goes and calls LA. She comes to town and can clear up whatever he was doing.

Now in the promo we have 2 townspeople just telling him "Shame on you for hurting our Zoe" Never saying what. That isn't the casino theme. That has to come early in the episode while he is at work at the RJ.
Phew you guys are moving fast for me to keep up.
But yes, I'm feeling pretty confident. It seems next week's episode will be a make or break episode. We'll know what actually happened that night. (I hope.)

And add to everything you said the fact that George is calling Wade a good guy in a future episode...Yep. Feeling good in my bubble.
