Anime Sub or Dub?: The debate starts over...
Don't get this confused with the title that's on the Anime Appreciation thread. :)
I'm still sticking with my beliefs that the original sub is a lot better. Of course, there's still a few exceptions when it comes to dubbing and they are... -Witch Hunter Robin -Nightwalker -Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust And I think there's a few more but I can't think of it right now. |
Too bad we lost the old forum. We're getting into a good debate.
I think the oriningal sub is good also. Another exception to the dub is .Hack//Sign. |
I know...I had posted up some nice quotes from the site that thought CardCaptor Sakura was bad to watch because it dealt with magic...or something like that
Is the Sailor Moon thread still around. If it is, I guess I can repost those funny Sailor Moon rumors  Ah that cracked me up, especially with the one who wrote that e-mail saying that Leonardo Dicaprio was gonna be one of the voice actors for Sailor Moon :rotfl: |

Re: dub. I haven't seen that many to be a judge, but I just think the comedies should never be dubbed. Especially the very slapstick ones like Naruto. Forgive me if you disagree. |

Here's the link if you wanna check it out: Dumb Sailor Moon Rumors And it's all right if you like dub. Everyone has their opinion about sub or dub... |
 If Leonardo Decaprio did a voice it'll be the biggest cartoon on tv ;)

Okay, if anyone is confused, here's that e-mail again from that site:

If I have to pick the worst dubbing, it would have to be (sadly) Yu-Gi-Oh. Although the Japanese version was a lot more entertaining, the dubbing company had some potential to appeal to "kids" without kissing the FCC and those parent groups that boycott any "violence", "nudity", and "the random stuff".
Now don't get me wrong, dubbing is fine. At least you won't have to read subtitles, especially if you're illiterate (no really, I have friends who hate reading subtitles while watching something foreign). But I guess it's the way you dub. Sailor Moon may have cut out a few episodes (although having DiC's rights to the series expire a few years later makes up for it...somewhat) but YGO has just the craziest dubbing techniques. This explains why people are pissed at the fact that One Piece had a lot (not like one or two...a LOT) of episodes cut off. After watching the American and Japanese version and going to the nifty site a.k.a Yu-Jyo.net I will give you my two cents on what gets cut off or edited. (Oh by the way, the evidence lies in that site with the pictures. Blood- Fine...I can live with that. Especially when there are those scenes that Bakura or Atemu (a.k.a Yami) are coughing up blood. Light- No this doesn't get cut off or edited. It's actually edited thanks to 4Kids. Apparently, 4Kids has this strange fetish for adding light gimmicks. Ex. Monsters slashing off other monsters, or during one of Yugi's matches when the chainsaw is replaced with a laser disc. Or if someone dies, light surrounds them (no this is not in the original) and apparently, they're not dead. Well...we know where they're going for this one. Violence- Well, depends on how extreme the violence is but some of them are pretty much slapstick (Mai slapping Jounouchi). Dialogue- All right, obviously our mouth movements compared to a Japanese mouth movement is different so obviously it's kinda hard to make the dialogue word for word. One of the reasons why I had stopped watching after the whole Yami no Marik thing is the endless rants of friendship. (Actually, in the Japanese version, it does come and go but not everytime). Signs- I think the point that the American cartoons are trying to make is that even the easiest words (like Kaiba...and Land) would make no sense to kids and views them as full on illiterate. Fine, take the Chinese signs out but what's the point of taking out bathroom signs, keyboard signs, signs (exit signs) and building signs (hospital)? How are we supposed to tell that's a hospital and not one of Seto's many penthouse suites? :irked: Sorry...just that my renewed faith has come back to look up that YGO site and watch my imported DVD. It's all right if you guys like dub and supposedly, it's aimed for kids but there's just a lot of dumb dubbing going on. My only hope is that 4Kids loses its rights to the series just as DiC (and now Cloverway) loses theirs to Sailor Moon. But it's my opinion :D |
I didn't know there was that much wrong  Those dubbers must have fun trying to find ways to cut things or overwrite things out ;)

But I love to rant about the way 4Kids dubs their anime series. But could've been worse. We might have had a live-action Yu-Gi-Oh and all the monsters (or at least the non-human looking ones) would resemble the ones from Power Rangers :lmao: |
Live Action  Oh that was good one. It would be like the Japenese Live Sailor Moon. At least we would be happy that the graphics and filming would be better her in the US ;)

Or maybe it'll be like how "Saban Moon" could've been. Half live-action, half cartoon :lmao: |
I forgot about that. Sailor Jupiter can blast everyone in her wheelchair
I want to see a live actor talk about the heart of the cards with a straight face and sound serious ;) |

I think it would have to be on the Comedy Channel

I'd rather sit through a film that was subtitled than dubbed anyway. Whenever it's dubbed, it's usually done poorly.

I don't know...I should go read that Wikipedia entry again. |
Definitely subtitled. The dubs usually sound pretty montonous to me.

Hi Lady Lee
I think 95% of dubbed anime and movies dialog is changed. I saw the english version of 'Steam Boy" but my sister also watched it in japenese and said the story was basically different, the same with " Castle in the Sky". |
The dubbing companies must've held the belief that their "audience" (kids) would not notice the difference or think it's really a Japanese show.
I can't blame them if some parts of the dialogue is changed...I mean, just as long as it's true to the original and remains consistent with the overall plot. I mean, our mouth movements is kinda different when a Japanese person talks  Changing dialogue to play down to the kids (or to make it something horrendous and different)...that's a different story. |
I agree, If the movie or show had non-kid dialoge in the first place it should remain that way.

I tried watching Advent Children in the dub version and quickly had to change it. Not that the dialogue was that much altered, the acting was really bad. |
I own Advent Children but i haven't seen it yet, luckily i have it in japenese ;)
|
Good thing you have that option to turn off the English dubs and listen to the Japanese. Thank goodness. The actor they chose for Cloud has a great voice. :D
