I might have to watch the movie now after the finale of American Inventor to hear that voice :D

Lain 05-23-2006 03:25 PM

My friend prefers Ranma 1/2 dubbed but only because she doesn't want to read the subtitiles.

At least half of the cast or secondary characters sounded lifeless to me

There are dub actors that have this really bad habit of not putting any life in their characters.

Jedisakora 05-23-2006 06:12 PM

I know. They're just soo bland. I watched a little bit of the english version of my Angelic Layer and they have the same words but the voice acting and voices are horrible!

I have the imported version :yay: And the Japanese voices were great. Just kinda found it annoying that it focused too much on Cloud. I don't know, maybe it's just me. I've never really played the games before.

I'm not buying the billingual version...I hear a lot of mix reviews on how the English version was so I'm just gonna stick with my intuition and avoid it

Jedisakora 05-24-2006 06:16 AM

The Advent children movie goes with the new Kingdom Hearts that my sister is playing so she keeps telling me about the Final Fantasy characters in it since she already went ahead and watched the movie so she'd know about the characters for the game.

Lain 05-24-2006 09:38 AM

I havent played both Kingdom Hearts but I've seen screenshots with Cloud and Sephi(roth)

Jedisakora 05-24-2006 08:46 PM

Ash told me that they're the same person some-how...

wanderer78 05-29-2006 05:18 PM

I don't necessarily prefer dubs, but I think they should be an option. And anything that creates work for actors is a good thing IMO. But that's just me.

Also, I think it gets more people into anime. I watch subtitled foreign movies all the time, but I never did it with anything animated. But well dubbed animes on Adult Swim got me into the genre (ie Cowboy Bebop).

Now I can go either way. If the VA's are good and expressive, I don't have a problem with dubbing.

Jedisakora 05-30-2006 01:40 PM

I guess Dubs are good that they lead you into the original sometimes. Its how i saw Sailor Moon and CardCaptor Sakura to begin with but sometimes i think they can turn you off from watching the original too.

Lain 06-02-2006 11:41 AM

I suppose it depends on how it's dubbed and how dubbers handle it. Are they gonna cut off random stuff...etc.

Dubs are okay for the fact you don't have to read the subtitles. I don't mind reading the subtitles...it's just something you get used to.

Jedisakora 06-03-2006 02:45 PM

I know. After watching 3 episodes in a row i sometimes forget i'm reading subtitles

Lain 06-04-2006 04:16 PM

You just get used to it

Rarely does 4Kids cuts and dubs amuse me or isn't drastic. This one seems to be okay (quite frankly, it looks pretty cute in the English version)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...2/189-01-u.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...2/189-01-j.jpg

But most often, 4Kids light fetishes and random cuts never fail to amuse me. One example is taking out letters from a computer keyboard.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...2/191-02-j.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...2/191-02-u.jpg

Soon enough, not only will we have kids that have the potential to be illiterate but computer illiterate as well.

Lain 06-26-2006 10:02 PM

So, anyone else want to put their two cents on dubbing and subbing? :look:

Jedisakora 06-27-2006 05:32 PM

I didn't see those pics earlier. I don't see why they had to dub out the keyboard

Lain 06-27-2006 07:38 PM

I'll understand dubbing the zoo sign (the lions are actually cute :D ) but dubbing the keyboards is just dumb

MBfan19 06-27-2006 10:48 PM

Since i'm so used to subtitles.. I think it's better but if it is dubbed it allows people instead of having to read to follow the chracters better or story-line definitely. It does sound kind of weird to me though at times because of the difference in the sounds of th original to the dubbed.

Jedisakora 06-29-2006 08:03 AM

You can't forger dialog, character personalities, and places.

There are some anime series when the voice actors who dub it to the English/American version sound lifeless. I can understand if they have to slightly change the dialogue because our mouth movements aren't the same to the Japanese version.

This is true. But sometimes the story line or the characters do change in dubbed versions. Sailor Moon (story-line wise when episodes were being omitted entirely), Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece...etc.

Lain 09-04-2006 11:40 PM

I will only say this once. I hate it when VA's force themselves to try and sound like the original character...when dubbing that is  I was a bit disappointed at Shinchan's dubbed voice. I know the seiyuu for Shinchan was a woman but this dubbed version, the VA is just attempting to sound manly with a hint of a woman's voice >.<

angry little lawyer 09-05-2006 05:46 PM

For me, it usually depends on how I first heard the anime in question...For example I first heard Neon Genesis Evangelion in Japanese with english subtitles and when I saw the dubbed version I found myself constantly nitpicking Shinji and Rei's voices... Not that I'm dissing the voice actors..much props to them but sometimes I feel that they don't "get" the characters...For example in English Shinji sounds whiney when in the original Japanese version he sounds apathetic.

Sailor Moon I first heard dubbed and loved it until they changed the voice actors and the new actors tried to sound like the originals and it wasn't that good...Now I can only stand the Japanese version..

Cowboy Bebop I first heard dubbed and think its one of the finest dubbings ever...I heard the Japanese dub and didn't like it as much. :)

So for me, I usually prefer an anime depending on how I heard it first.

Lain 09-06-2006 01:21 AM

 Hey angry. You do make a good point there on how it depends which version of the anime you heard first. Say like Sailor Moon. In America, especially for kids, they grew up hearing the English version and have gotten used to it.

Though I did my rant on the voice acting for Crayon Shinchan, I applaud Cartoon Network for being smart enough to put Crayon Shinchan on Adult Swim instead of Toonami (Toonami hasn't been the same since Sailor Moon was pulled from the air. That and DBZ has overstayed its welcome). After all, Crayon Shinchan is a cartoon not intended for kids, even if the main character is a 5 year old who takes after his father.

So kudos to CN, you've finally done something right

Lain 09-26-2006 04:25 AM

I'm going to entertain you with some rants of why certain things were taken off from Yu-Gi-Oh or added/edited.

Here's some keywords in case I'm going to get people confused:
Cut: English version has cut this entirely
Edited: It's still there, just that 4Kids tinkered with it
Added: Ranges from lights to clothes.

All pics: Yu-Jyo.net

Keep in mind that these are not the real reasons but just my theories:

Status: Cut
Theory: In hopes of preventing kids from diving more in to obesity by copying this move.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...17bakura_u.jpg
Status: Added
Theory: Bakura's just a dark magical creature and one must emphasize on that. I think...

Status: Cut
Theory: It's a world where no one catches even the sniffles. Well, except for Bakura's constant habit of fainting that landed him in the hospital...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...2/128-16-j.jpg
Status: Cut
Theory: None of us was supposed to know this guy had any abs at all

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...2/140-01-j.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...2/138-07-j.jpg

Theory: Gene Simmons was afraid of the competition.

I'll add more later on but what do you guys think ;)

Lain 07-12-2007 01:04 AM

Time to bring back an oldie but a goodie.

But it's because I watched this comparison of the original vs. the English version of Sailor Moon. Kudos to this person:

Side-by-Side Comparison 1, Dub and Original Sailormoon

babyyangelz 10-31-2007 04:01 PM

I think 90% of the anime is better with sub

Tomorrow's skies 04-02-2008 11:48 AM

Like with movies, I tend to like both. I only speak English, so I think I need to watch both to get a fuller understanding of what I'm watching.
