Movies in Glorious Black and White AND NOW TECHNICOLOR!
It is so hard to find old movies in stores and such and it seems that they're so expensive when you find them online. So I normally reserve them from the library. Which old movies have you seen/liked?
Here are mine any my thoughts: [img]smilies/star.gif[/img] Blonde Venus This movie is a lot of fun to watch if you're a Little Rascals fan because Dickie Moore is in it. Marlene Dietrich's character progresses nicely through the film and the end is nice. [img]smilies/star.gif[/img] Coquette This movie won was Mary Pickford's first talkie and won her an Academy Award but I wasn't pleased with it at all. It was overly dramatic and I really didn't feel close with any of the characters when the movie was over. [img]smilies/star.gif[/img] Daddy-Long-Legs This was my first silent movie so I had sort of a hard time adjusting to it. I laughed in the beginning when Mary and the boy whose name I think was Jack had a protest against prunes. It reminded me of something from Little Rascals against spinach or something. [img]smilies/star.gif[/img] Grand Hotel This movie moves along steadily and is very interesting. Joan Crawford blew me away in this one and I've been a fan of hers ever since. [img]smilies/star.gif[/img] Laughing Sinners I saw this solely because of Joan Crawford. I was pleasantly suprised when I saw Mary Ann Jackson from The Little Rascals in it. However, the movie was rather dull in my opinion. [img]smilies/star.gif[/img] Mildred Pierce This is a very interesting movie. You become engaged with the characters and are sort of guessing the whole time about the murder. Joan Crawford shone again, this time as a mother. [img]smilies/star.gif[/img] My Best Girl Ever since I saw this, I know why Mary Pickford is called America's Sweetheart and why she chose Buddy Rogers as her husband. The end of the Milestone release has some home video of theirs and it is just as sweet as the movie. [img]smilies/star.gif[/img] Platinum Blonde I saw this for Loretta Young but wasn't very impressed by her. I also heard a lot about Jean Harlow but she sort of annoyed me as well. The only thing I thought was amusing about this movie was the joke about the garters. [img]smilies/star.gif[/img] Red Dust I really adore the 1930s, but many of the movies are really predictable. This one is no exception. I did like seeing Mary Astor though. She reminds me of June Marlowe from the Little Rascals. [img]smilies/star.gif[/img] Some Like it Hot I just watched this today and as much as I think Marilyn Monroe was a huge floozy, there is something magnetic about her. She was so innocent and fun to watch. This movie is really fun too. I recommend it. [img]smilies/star.gif[/img] Sparrows It is fun watching Mary Pickford acting as a mom. It is a shame she couldn't have any children of her own. I can't really describe why I liked this movie. It is actually somewhat dull when you think about it, but I enjoyed it for some reason. [img]smilies/star.gif[/img] Tess of the Storm Country I love this movie. It is dramatic yet realistic and sort of off on its own. I love the kiss scene between Mary and the rich man's son. my favorite black and white film is SABRINA, it was actually the first black and white movie that i saw, and i loved it. Other older films that aren't in black and white that i like are: To Sir with Love, and Charade.

Whew, a Mary Pickford fan? [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img] I'm so ashamed to say that I still haven't seen a full feature of hers [img]smilies/frown.gif[/img] Just a few shorts. I'd like to see more though.
Atm my fave is Ball Of Fire which has just everything you could possibly want [img]smilies/wink.gif[/img] A wonderful leading lady who's a bit of a 'tart with a heart', a handsome leading man who loves her regardless, plenty of laughs, a good dose of romance, very clever gags, loads of fun, and even a few tears!! My favorites are You Can't Take It With You, Harvey, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's A Wonderful Life.

Men of Boys Town i also like "Paper Moon" which was in B/W, but it was shot in the 1970s! [img]smilies/lol.gif[/img] but the story takes place way earlier. [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img] |

why do the films have to be older classics? one of my favorite films is from 1999...it's called 'la fille sur le pont' (the girl on the bridge)....and it's filmed in glorious black and white....in french with english subtitles...
the story.... "One chilly night, on a Paris bridge, a girl leans out over the Seine with tears in her eyes, contemplating the icy waters below. Suddenly, a stranger with a penetrating gaze emerges out of the darkness, a man who will change her life. It is Gabor, a once brilliant but now fading performer in need of a partner. He has set his sights on this luckless but oddly alluring girl, Adele, a girl with nowhere to go who is shifting nervously on the edge of a decision. I watched The Bishops Wife yesterday and I didn't really like it all that much, but I realized that Loretta Young c. 1947 looked a LOT like Gwenyth Paltrow (sp?). Check it out.

I agree the older movies are often times difficult to find, thank god for the AMC & TMC channel, they often show the b&W movies. My favorite b/w movies are:
To Kill A Mockingbird It's a Wonderful Life Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, the orginal with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf Sabrina Roman Holiday Love Affair with Irene Dunne & Charles Boyer The Bad Seed, a really good creepy movie [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img] |

A Streetcar Named Desire - I read the play and school and liked it so I rented the movie and also liked it. They are similar (although there are some details missing from the movie).
The Wizard of Oz Singin in the Rain - I love musicals and this is one of my favs. The Sound of Music (same as Singin in the Rain). __________________

I watched Don Juan because Mary Astor and June Marlowe were in it but I was bored to tears. I just kept waiting and waiting for it to be over but it never seemed to end.
I also watched Chaplin's City Lights which I absolutely adored. The music fits the scenes perfectly and Chaplin shines! I love it and highly recommend it. __________________

I saw On The Waterfront recently and loved it. Of course, it helped that Marlon Brando was in it. [img]smilies/wink.gif[/img] I really thought he and Eva Marie Saint had great chemistry.
