Yule (Winter Solstice) {pron. eye-elle}
A celebration of the winter solstice; celebrating of life and the returning of the sun. Candles are often lit and left to burn to light the way for the sun. This is the second fire festival. On this day the Yule log is lit and left to burn from dusk of the winter solstice until dawn the following day. The ashes from the Yule log are then kept to be used to help light the Yule log the following year. If you believe in the Goddess and Horned God this is when the Horned God is reborn from the Goddess. Could be considered as the Wiccan version of Christmas.


Imbolc (February 2nd) {pron. im-bulk}
This is seen as the time between winter and spring (despite the date, as it has more to do with being between the winter solstice and spring equinox), and is seen as a time for new beginnings. This is where the first signs of life are appearing after the long winter. Some see this as a woman's day/woman's holiday, and in some beliefs it is seen as a time for initiations, rededications, and pledges for the coming year. You could also call this holiday a spring cleaning holiday as in with the old and welcoming the new is also a big theme of the festival. At this point the Goddess becomes the maiden as she recovers from childbirth.


Ostara (Spring Equinox) {pron. oh-star-ah}
Ostara is a celebration of the spring equinox; a celebration of fertility, new life, and new beginnings. On this day, the day and night are of equal length which means that for many this is a time of equality and balance. This is a perfect time for taking a moment to really appreciate and experience the nature and new life around you. The courtship of the Goddess and the Horned God begins. Could be considered as the Wiccan version of Easter.


Beltane (starts at sunset on April 30th and finishes at sunset on May 1st) {bell-tayn}
A time for unions, loyalty, and new beginnings; this time is seen as a perfect time for initiations, handfastings (weddings), wiccanings (Wiccan version of a Christening), and starting new things. This day is traditionally seen as the fire festival. The word Beltane means ‘bright fire’ or ‘lucky fire’. This is the perfect time to spend the night out in a forest if possible, but most importantly to spend time with friends and family. This is a celebration of light and fertility and is seen as the opposite of Samhain (they are celebrated at opposite times of the year) The Goddess and Horned God are united and the Goddess is now with child.


Litha (Summer Solstice) {pron. leeta}
Also known as Midsummer, this is the celebration of the summer solstice; a celebration of nature and family. It is the longest day of the year so a time of joy and strength of light. Balefires are lit to celebrate the light of the blazing Sun. This is also the time when the inevitable journey towards the darkness begins again, as the days can only get shorter now. It is said to be a time when all things are possible. The Horned God is at his strongest at this point.


Lughnasadh (July 31st/August 1st) {pron. loo-nas-ah}
Also known as Lammas, this is a celebration of food and harvesting. It is a time for preparing for the coming winter. It is a time to be thankful for the previous year. This is the first of the harvest festival, and has a theme of sacrifice - as something must be given way for something new to come. The Horned God begins to age, while the Goddess enters the Crone part of her cycle. I believe this is a little like a Wiccan version of Thanksgiving but I could be wrong as I am not American.


Mabon (Autumn Equinox) {pron. may-bon}
The celebration of the autumn equinox; a celebration of unity and divinity. It is a time of balance as the day and night is at equal length, and also the end of the preparation for winter. This is the second harvest festival. This is a time to give thanks for the harvest the Earth has provided, whilst also a reminder that winter is coming, meaning that the sun is dying and will not be reborn until Yule. This day also marks the end of the preparation for winter. It is a perfect time for finishing up old projects and making plans for new ones. It is also good to remove negativity from your life at this time. The Horned God has aged further and is now approaching his final stages before death.


Samhain (starts at sunset on October 31st and finishes at sunset on November 1st) {pron. soween}
A time to celebrate the lives of those who have passed on, and it often involves paying respect to ancestors, family members, elders of the faith, friends, pets and other loved ones who have died. This is the third and final harvest festival. This is seen as a celebration of darkness and death which is why it is seen as the opposite of Beltane. It is believed that on this night the veil between this world and the afterlife is at its weakest/thinnest, making it easier to communicate with the dead. This is when the Horned God dies and the Goddess is in her Crone phase mourning the loss of her son and consort. This is also a Wiccan’s new year. To many it is also seen as the most important of all the sabbats.
