Speaking of reading, was I the only one not aware that the Percy Jackson books (and all the books that came after) were specifically written to showcase more representation in kid lit? I mean, I've only read the Percy Jackson books so far, but even in them, you could tell that it was a diverse world.

Apparently, the other books have gay couples, transgender characters, bisexual representation, etc.

On top of the "run of the mill" characters of all genders, ethnicities, backgrounds, abilities, preferences, etc. that you could already see in the original series. And on top of the fact that the character of Percy Jackson himself has ADHD and dyslexia (which the author's son has)...

And they're for kids. How awesome is that?

I still need to read the Percy Jackson series. I didn't know about the diversity in the books until I read it on Twitter.

Awesome video! Love Troye

I didn't know that about the Percy Jackson books either! I haven't read them, but hearing this makes me want to check them out.

They're fun! Well, I've always been a fan of mythology, and this is a really fun spin on mythology, so maybe I'm biased. Still, even before I knew about the "on purpose" diversity aspect to them, I did love the attitude they have.

They don't hit you over the head with it, but they really do seem to have a philosophy of difference being a good thing.

I have a friend whose been reading the Percy Jackson series.

Personally I can't do it because they are YA. The only YA I've read are Hunger Games and Twilight but I can't read any others. The YA genre is just one that I'm not into. And even when I try it doesn't work for me.

I guess I'm lucky enough that the YA thing doesn't matter to me when it's well written. Well, except when it's those "fight for survival in a dystopian society where you never know who your friends are" narratives. Fortunately for me, the Percy Jackson books are about mythology, which I love, and also driven by hope.

^ I don't care if it is YA or not. As long as the story is good I'm all for it.

If anyone wants to read a YA Fantasy story about two girls falling in love. This book is pretty good.
