GLBT #156: Homosexuality is not a choice, Homophobia is.

I hope you like the title.
Feel free to change it if you can think of something better

You know what a Plebiscite is right? It is similar to a referendum yet not binding in parliament. So basically the population all has to vote on it (we have a compulsory system here so everyone of age MUST vote or get a fine/jail/gaol time! Anyway, it is like a referendum in that way but unlike a referendum they will go by what the majority of us the voters choose, the plebiscite forces us to vote and even if 99% choose 'Yes' they can reject it in parliament! It will cost over $200million dollars to do this! What that article is pointing out is that works out to 12 McChicken Nuggets for every man, woman and child in the entire nation with over $13million dollars left over for BBQ sauce! Plus they could just do a 'free vote' in parliament where they all vote on the issue based on their own personal ideals. This would be better and save $200M to go into other things - ten it means we could have both. Equality and our nuggets.

I studied poli sci and history in university, so I do have a passing familiarity with what a plebiscite is, yes. If I didn't, there's always Wikipedia.

I was mostly rolling my eyes at the fact that, in this day and age, a modern democracy like Australia needs a plebiscite to validate gay marriage.

Sorry about that, I thought you were rolling your eyes at reading that article's title of people being ignorant or something without reading the actual point of the article (I know people in who pretend to read links or watch video links.) Pisses me of that does! Because at face-value that name of the article does give a different idea of what they are going on about.

Well, I might as well be honest and say that I rarely read the articles when they're posted as a link like that. I come to to discuss things/issues, not to have homework, you know? Plus, my poor old laptop had had a lot of viral infections over the years and it's made me quite leery of sites I don't already know. And see, you summed the issue very well, in terms that can be contemplated and talked about quite easily.

To get back to the topic at hand, though, I still think you don't need a whole explanation to feel like a plebiscite, or even a referendum, is necessary when it comes to gay marriage. Australia is a democratic country, with separation of church and state. There is no reason on this Earth why its gay citizens shouldn't have access to the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts with regards to marriage.

That website is a safe one, it is the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper - equal to the New York Times or some other big reputable newspaper website.

I hear you. Of course, I couldn't have known that. I don't really trust the New York Times site, to be frank. I don't know, it just feels like all the U.S. sites get hacked all the time.

Hence why I enjoy talking about the issues so much, I guess.

I could not think of any other big newspapers to name that are not tabloids such as the Sun...

Good to see that you understand how a person who lives on the other side of the planet couldn't possibly be able to determine which are the reliable newspapers and which aren't.

Meanwhile: Roy Moore: Alabama top judge ousted over gay marriage stand

Alabama's top judge has been suspended for the remainder of his term for defying federal court rulings that legalised same-sex marriage.

Roy Moore, 69, violated judicial ethics with an order seen as directing probate judges to deny marriage licences to gay couples, a judicial panel ruled.

The decision was a "politically motivated effort" by radical groups, he said. His lawyer has vowed to appeal.

It is the second suspension for Mr Moore, an outspoken conservative.

In 2003, he was removed for refusing to take down a monument of the Ten Commandments he installed at a state building.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer man, frankly.

These fossils of the past are all going to go away eventually leaving us all with a better world to live in together!

At-least I did not say 'Weekly World News'! Well, now you know that if you see links from SMH (Sydney Morning Herald) then it is a safe link and not a tabloid.
