Buffy The Vampire Slayer Kills a Classic Scooby Gang Member

A major member of the core Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast was just killed and set off a potentially major new development for the Scoobies.

The modern Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic book has been making serious changes to the canon of the original Buffyverse, giving character's new arcs and accelerating some key transformations. However, one of the most radical deviations from the original series just got even further from established lore, which could set up another major shift for an important member of the story's original cast.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #24 just killed Xander, again. But given the circumstances surrounding this demise, this truly might finally be the end of this vampiric version of the character.

In the original continuity, Xander became a consistent ally and friend to Buffy and a foundational member of the Scoobies, the informal term for the group of evil-fighting heroes of Sunnydale. However, the modern incarnation of the character has had a far rougher experience. As a far more put-upon and despondent version of the character, Xander was eventually lured into the night by Drusilla and bitten by the vampire. Drusilla intended for him to die, only for Spike to share some of his blood, which began his transformation into a vampire. But Willow was able to sacrifice half of her soul to stop the full transformation and instead turn Xander into a half-vampire.

Xander used his newfound abilities to help the Scoobies for a time before the events of the "Hellmouth" crossover forced him to sacrifice this bond and have his soul fade. While his friends initially believed this resulted in his death, it only ensured the fully vampiric form of Xander was able to finally rise up. Quickly establishing himself as the new "Big Bad" of Sunnydale, Xander tried to manipulate things to be reunited with his "best friend." But his efforts only resulted in more chaos, building to the events of Buffy the Vampire Slayer #24. While Buffy tries to help Willow control her darker mystical impulses, Xander finds himself in the Sunnydale High courtyard facing off with Faith. Xander proves to be a capable enough fighter to hold her at bay, even biting her before Kendra arrives to help and force him back.

But when Willow descends to the courtyard, seemingly back in control of herself, Xander becomes distracted for one moment too long. Faith takes the chance to drive a stake into his back, causing Xander to crumble to dust and ash as he reaches out to Willow one more time. This seems to be the end of the vampiric Xander, as there's little way to reverse the full destruction of his body. While the series is full of magic and resurrections, this seems (at least on the surface) to be a fairly final fate for this version of Xander. But Willow, consumed by her grief, quickly opens a portal to try and find him, which results in many of the Scoobies being dragged into alternate dimensions.

Perhaps there's a chance Willow will find Xander -- or at least another reality's version of him, which could result in her either bringing him back to their universe or at least coming to terms with the loss of her Xander. It also marks the third time Xander has been "killed" in the series, effectively making him the Kenny McCormick of this Buffyverse. But even his final moments in Sunnydale could be a tease of dark things to come, with some of his final words being a warning to Faith that the Scoobies would inevitably turn on her. With her killing of Xander, it's likely there'll be additional drama with the other teens, which could lead this version of Faith down a similar road as her original incarnation, where she ended up striking out on her own.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Officially Steps Back Into the '90s

The new incarnation of Buffy and the Scoobies just stepped back into the '90s to see some familiar faces and found a deadly threat.

BOOM! Studios' incarnation of the Buffyverse has made some serious deviations from the original show's continuity, far beyond simply updating it for the 2020s. Set in the modern day instead of the late 1990s, this version of the Scoobies has been through a number of more nefarious threats than the original version of Buffy eve had to face, notably including the corruption of her close friend Xander into a vampire. But following a recent battle between him and Dark Willow in Buffy the Vampire Slayer #24, fellow Slayer Faith was able to deliver a surprise killing blow to Xander, dusting him in front of their friends.

Desperate to see Xander again, Willow threw herself into a dimensional rift, with Buffy, Giles, Kendra, and Rose following after them. Likewise, Wesley and the ghost of Ethan Rayne were also dragged into the portal and seemingly deposited in a version of the Buffy universe going through the events of Season 3's "Band Candy" from the original show. It turns out this is because they're actually in the timeline from the original series, with the new version of the cast having to briefly explore the original show's universe.

Moving behind the scenes, the modern version of the Scoobies are introduced to their alternate counterparts, who are in the process of picking up the pieces from "Band Candy," which was the sixth episode of the show's third season. This means that Xander is still dating Cordelia, Willow is still romantically tied to Oz (and carrying on an illicit romance with Xander behind their backs,) and Faith's descent into villainy hadn't started yet, which is supported by the relative peace of the group. The classic Scoobies share tacos and celebrate their victory, even making sure to lightly harass Giles over his brief time returned to his rebellious teen phase as Ripper.

The group gets to explore some notable locations from the original series, including the music club called the Bronze and the original Sunnydale High School. Unfortunately, it turns out there's a strong rule to dimensional hopping in the Slayerverse -- if a human makes their way into a reality they're not meant to be in, then they are tracked down by Lurkers. These ghost-like hounds hunt down the unwelcome visitors and rip them to pieces, swallowing their memories and destroying them completely. With little choice, Anya sacrifices her last Vengekhi Crystal -- a seemingly powerful magical artifact -- to follow after the modern-Willow's trail and find the displaced Scoobies from the modern day.

After the modern Willow watches her counterpart being friendly with the original Xander and Buffy, she finally comes to terms with the loss of their version of Xander and allows Buffy to lead her back to the rest of their group so Anya can return them to their own reality. While it's a brief visit and one that doesn't end in any encounters between Buffy and her pre-established self, it's still an interesting excursion into the growing Buffy the Vampire Slayer multiverse. With more realities out there -- such as the one where Willow was the Slayer instead of Buffy or the mysterious multiversal Hyperion Hotel found by the current BOOM! Studios-continuity version of Angel -- this suggests there could be more crossovers in the future.

It's also the closest connection to the original Buffy canon yet for the new series, teasing a possible return to that world down the line as Buffy and Giles agree to further research this other reality, and what the full ramifications of such a discovery mean for their world. If anything, all these journeys hint that a day may be coming for Buffy where she'll have to venture back into the universe that made her a household name.

The modern reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has slowly opened up an entire multiverse of vampires, slayers, and monsters for Buffy and her allies to confront. But their greatest threat might be the other residents of Sunnydale.

As revealed in Buffy the Vampire Slayer #26, several of Buffy's allies have seemingly allied themselves with the Mayor of Sunnydale Richard Wilkins and the Watcher's Council, setting up a dark inverse of the core Scoobies at the worst possible time.

Things have become increasingly dangerous in Sunnydale as of late -- and considering the town is home to plenty of threats thanks to the Hellmouth within the city limits, that's saying something. But ever since the death of a corrupted Xander at the hands of Faith and the Scoobies' brief multiversal adventure, tensions are high in Sunnydale, with multiple vampires trying to gain power and Slayers like Kendra and Faith pushed to the brink of exhaustion. While Buffy, Willow, Giles, and Anya have been trying to focus on the multiverse, other figures have been circling one another and taking on new responsibilities. This includes Faith, who finds herself drawn away from that group and more towards Mayor Wilkens following an encounter with him in the previous issue.

The Mayor is revealed to have quietly recruited numerous others, including Robin Wood (Faith's Watcher), as well as Wesley into his confidence. He's even seemingly recruited Cordelia Chase, who serves as an assistant to him at night and provides assistance -- and is seemingly unaware of the true stakes of the situation. Upon having Robin, Wesley, and Faith altogether, Wilkens speaks to the group about their place in Sunnydale. It turns out that he's been in further contact with the Watcher's Council and has been informed that Giles has been relieved of his duties as a Watcher, leaving the position open for Wesley to take over. Wilkens has also been given the freedom to offer anything to his "A-Team" to help them reestablish control over Sunnydale, with Wilkens wanting Faith, Robin and Wesley as be that group.

This is worrisome for numerous reasons, in particular for introducing chaos into the Scoobies dynamics just as universal level threats have begun to surface. This could divide the Scoobies and their allies at a crucial time, with the entire multiverse seemingly in danger. The fact that it's Wilkens behind these moves also bodes poorly, as his history in the previous Buffy the Vampire Slayer makes him a possible threat even in this new timeline. In the original canon, the Mayor was ultimately the villain of the show's third season. An outwardly affable figure, the Mayor was secretly a powerful man who'd been seeking ascension into a pure demonic form -- and all the power that came with it.

His previous version threatened plenty of lives across Sunnydale and was crucial to the corruption of Faith, turning her against the rest of her friends and setting her up to become one of Buffy's toughest challenges. Although the Mayor was eventually defeated, he came close to victory in the original series. It's possible that he's responsible for breaking the Faith of this world too. Now, with an entire team of Scoobies at his disposal, there's a question of what the Mayor is planning to do with them -- and how much damage they could really bring to Sunnydale in the process, even while trying to save it.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Teases Multiverse With a Surprising Villain Behind It

There's a threat to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer multiverse -- and it could be connected to a minor figure from the original Angel series.

Across the modern revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, an entire multiverse of slayers and monsters has been steadily introduced -- with the modern incarnation of the Scoobies even seemingly visiting the universe of the original show for a brief visit.

These multiversal adventures helped Willow and Buffy contend with the loss of Xander (who'd finally been fully corrupted into a vampire and was subsequently killed by Faith), and also unlocked other threats -- including setting up a multiversal level threat that, according to Anya, wants to wipe out every reality in the Slayer multiverse.

Among these other dimensional threats to the Scoobies are the Lurkers, the monstrous beasts that roam realities in search of people who don't belong so it can consume their memories. The Scoobies escaped the Lurkers while visiting an alternate reality largely unscathed, but Willow is surprised to discover that one is still following her even in her home reality as she researches more about dimensional travel. While she and Giles are still trying to figure out the full extent of the multiverse, it turns out that Anya has a deeper understanding of it -- which makes sense, given her previous travels to other dimensions. While speaking with Morgan -- the Slayer before Buffy who was secretly revived and has been working with her -- Anya reveals that there's a specific threat to the multiverse.

Anya has discovered that someone known as Silas is at the heart of the threat to the multiverse, and is the one controlling the Lurkers. He seemingly wants to bring about the end of all things, wiping out every world in the multiverse as part of some unknown scheme -- and effectively make him into the Buffyverse version of DC's Anti-Monitor. He's specifically looking for a "connecting point," where all the universes intersect. Anya seemingly knows more about Silas as well but doesn't get the chance to further explain the situation before Giles comes over to continue their research.

It's a major development for the series, giving the so-far unseen ultimate threat of the series a name. Notably, there was a Silas in the original Buffyverse, and although he wasn't a crucial villain he was an important one who also hopped across dimensions. Silas was introduced in the conclusion of Season 2 of Angel, during a story-arc that saw Angel Investigations relocated to the world of Pylea. Silas was the leader of the Covenant of Trombli, the ruling class of the dimension and secretly an agent of the demonic law firm Wolfram & Hart. His mission was to force an empowered princess from another realm (Cordelia) to sleep with their champion (the heroic Groosalugg), potentially stealing her visions from the Powers That Be.

Desperate to hold onto his power across the three-part storyline, Silas ultimately ordered the eradication of the human slaves to quell a revolt, but was stopped and beheaded by Cordelia. While he was a minor villain in the grand scheme of things, it's possible that this could be another, more ambitious version of the villain who can use pocket realities and dimensions to his advantage. Alternatively, this Silas could be an original and unconnected threat -- which the modern Buffy the Vampire Slayer has proven willing to utilize at various points, such as with the monstrous Hellmother. Regardless of the true nature of the threat, it's clearly a big enough danger to catch the attention of Anya -- and potentially bring about the end of the Slayer multiverse.
