Oh I really liked that poem. I should read poems more often, I'm not a big fan but I can't just ignore everything because it's a format I don't particularly like, I'm sure there are things there I would love (obviously)

ohhh! I was just thinking these days that I want more (well actually some because I have almost none) theater knowledge. Since I never go to plays because they are either far away, expensive and/or not interesting to me, I end up not watching anything. But I love theater, actually got into it before I did to tv and movies (not counting animations).

I like that! I don't think I've seen/read self portraits before in written art forms.
Neither have I and it was an original idea!

I'm going to post a small part of a piece, by a Portuguese author Miguel Esteves Cardoso
Well, I believe that if you posted his description is because you agree with it. It must be a North thing because, except from certain features, I found my friend from Galicia while reading.

Oh, excellent idea! Just like Nanda here, I like theater but I haven’t gone much, only a few plays. So, I will welcome and read what you post about this kind of art

Ok, so I haven’t read nothing else from him than what you posted and I have already found my second favorite Portuguese writer

I'm pretty sure they have!

When I said naughty, I should have said obscene

But here's another one from him, more chaste!

[SONETO DO PRAZER MAIOR]

Amar dentro do peito uma donzela;
Jurar-lhe pelos céus a fé mais pura;
Falar-lhe, conseguindo alta ventura;
Depois da meia-noite na janela:

Fazê-la vir abaixo, e com cautela
Sentir abrir a porta, que murmura;
Entrar pé ante pé, e com ternura
Apertá-la nos braços casta e bela:

Beijar-lhe os vergonhosos, lindos olhos,
E a boca, com prazer o mais jucundo,
Apalpar-lhe de leve os dois pimpolhos:

Vê-la rendida enfim a Amor fecundo;
Ditoso levantar-lhe os brancos folhos;
É este o maior gosto que há no mundo.

What did you think of this second one?? It's from the XVIII century, so the Portuguese is a little different from nowadays!

Don't worry, his obscenity is not easily find, I read his works were forbidden. I'm imagining a very old book by him forgotten in a library in Lisbon

Owwww So sweet!!! Not very chaste, but definitely sweet I don't find the Portuguese that different, but I don't have enough knowledge of it to notice

While we wait for you to catch up and open the theater part of the thread, I'm posting a poem by Mario Benedetti. He was from Uruguay and this is a small part of his thoughts. I still do not know if he dedicated it to someone...his offsprings maybe.

From Affection by Mario Benedetti
How can I let you know that there is always time?
That one has to look for it and give it to oneself...
That nobody lays down rules, except life...
That life without certain rules loses shape...
That shape is not lost when we open up...
That opening ourselves up is not to love indiscriminately...
That it is not forbidden to love...
That we can also hate...
That hate and love are two affections...
That aggression just because, hurts a lot ...
That the wounds close...
That doors should not be closed...
That the biggest door is affection...
That affections define us...
That defining oneself is not swimming against the tide...
That not the stronger the stroke, the more you draw...
That looking for balance doesn't mean to be warm...
That refusing words increase distances...
That meeting is beautiful...
That sex is part of the beauty of life ...
That life comes from sex...
That children's asking why, has its reason ...
That wanting to know about someone, is not just curiosity...
That knowing everything about everybody is unhealthy curiosity...
That being thankful never hurts...
That self-determination is not doing things alone...
That nobody wants to be alone...
That so as not to be alone we only have to give...
That in order to give, we have to receive before...
That to be given, we need to know how to ask...
That knowing how to ask is not whoring oneself…
That whoring and loving oneself are two different things…
That to be loved we must show what we are...
That someone can be only if helped...
That help is to encourage and support...
That adulation is not support...
That fawning is as hurtful as to turn the face...
That issues face to face are honest...
That nobody is honest because they do not steal...
That when you find no pleasure in things you do you're probably not living...
That to feel life one must not forget that there is death...
That one can be a living dead...
That we feel with the body and the mind...
That we listen with our ears...
That it is hard to be sensitive and not be hurt...
That being hurt is not bleeding to death...
That so as not to be hurt we build walls ...
That it would be better to build bridges...
That across them we go to the other side and no one returns...
That returning does not mean stepping back...
That stepping back may also mean to go forward...
That despite going forward and forward, we do not wake up closer to the sun...
How to let you know that that nobody lays down rules, apart from life?

I'm the other way around. I've started with Game Of Thrones! Book 1 is done, and the second I've already read half (almost).... I'm really liking it a lot. More details than in the show (obviously) some differences too.... I can't wait to start book 3!!!!!

Since I still have ahead of me, 3 more GoT books, I'm trying not to think what will come next, but yes, The Hunger Games, are in my to read list!

There's a poem I'd like to share with you... I was reminded about it when I saw that my friend had a line from it set in a messenger status It's "The Envoy of Mr Cogito" by Zbigniew Herbert and it's one of the best poems I've ever read, probably my favorite... And I guess not much was lost in translation, so enjoy!

The Envoy of Mr. Cogito
By Zbigniew Herbert

Go where those others went to the dark boundary
for the golden fleece of nothingness your last prize

go upright among those who are on their knees
among those with their backs turned and those toppled in the dust

you were saved not in order to live
you have little time you must give testimony

be courageous when the mind deceives you be courageous
in the final account only this is important

and let your helpless Anger be like the sea
whenever you hear the voice of the insulted and beaten

let your sister Scorn not leave you
for the informers executioners cowards—they will win
they will go to your funeral and with relief will throw a lump of earth
the woodborer will write your smoothed-over biography

and do not forgive truly it is not in your power
to forgive in the name of those betrayed at dawn

beware however of unnecessary pride
keep looking at your clown’s face in the mirror
repeat: I was called—weren’t there better ones than I

beware of dryness of heart love the morning spring
the bird with an unknown name the winter oak
light on a wall the splendour of the sky
they don’t need your warm breath
they are there to say: no one will console you

be vigilant—when the light on the mountains gives the sign—arise and go
as long as blood turns in the breast your dark star

repeat old incantations of humanity fables and legends
because this is how you will attain the good you will not attain
repeat great words repeat them stubbornly
like those crossing the desert who perished in the sand

and they will reward you with what they have at hand
with the whip of laughter with murder on a garbage heap

go because only in this way will you be admitted to the company of cold skulls
to the company of your ancestors: Gilgamesh Hector Roland
the defenders of the kingdom without limit and the city of ashes

Be faithful Go

Ugh, my advice won't help you with the hitting I found him overrated when I was 20, but I should try again. Which book did your someone buy? I couldn't finish Veronika decides to die and By the River Piedra I sat and cried but I believe the most known by him is The Alchemist. Tell your target that you also want to read it, so you can discuss it together once you finish, afterall not because you are Brazilian you need to know everything about Coelho, right?

Thanks, Mariana...and you're right, nationality shouldn't count too much on this, haha!
I was able to workaround my "argument" (so to speak) by mentioning other authors, like Flaubert. ..and Alain de Botton, who I really do like!
As for Coelho...he just...never really caught my attention, except for personal stuff like he calling himself a Brujo.

Ugh, I can't stand Coelho... I read a few of his books around 16 and didn't like it even then I had a feeling they were basically the same over and over again: trying to sell cliches as something deep and meaningful The only one book I enjoyed more than the others was "The Devil and Miss Prym".
