I think the main issue was the vast difference in acting talent: Sophia is a natural and Stephen is not. He wasn't terrible but not the best and it showed up all the more next to Sophia.

Ditto! Jana is so talented. I think Alex is one of the best parts of the series post-season 6. I love the character, faults and all.

Nathan also never got ripped (from the fanbase) for sleeping with Brooke. Haley wasn't happy but it was overall excused by the fanbase.

She did, indeed. I guess by this point Monster wasn't interested in actually worrying about quality.
