Who else thought Scott Bakula did a worthy job at playing a Starship Captain in the Enterprise TV series? I admit I had reservations when the show was first announced, but I liked him in what episodes I have seen.

Agree that Scott did a good job portraying Archer. The first season there was a boyish wonder and enthusiasm to the character, assuming that every species he met would be friendly. As time progressed, he became a bit harder, which was realistic.

Not just better TV; it's life

Very true. Enterprise did a decent job of showing the learning curve while exploring and meeting new species. Maybe especially with Archer and his initial attitude that every species he met would be friendly.

And how that got turned on its ear, and he eventually had to take care not to reach the exact opposite position.

I'm glad they didn't let him slip too far into Airlock Archer mode.

I had really hoped that Enterprise would have given us back story about the creation of the Prime Directive.

They kind of did, they just didn't explore it like they should have.

I suppose. Also would have been nice to learn more about the founding of the Federation.

As far as I am aware of the founding of the Federation was left for the final episode, or was it shown even earlier than that?

I believe it was mentioned, but we didn't get much in the way of details.
