I still really hate how they splice the Justin/Connor sex scene with Brian's heartfelt talk with Mikey about how "he's not coming back/he's fing movie stars!" The way they set it up, if I hadn't had all the episodes to watch in a row and had to watch it week by week on TV back in the day, I might've suspected Justin actually wouldn't come back to Pittsburgh to be with Brian. Me no likey...at all.

I wanna talk about the music cue "You Are My Sunshine" at the end of 5.07 when Brian's walking down the street alone after his awkward run-in with Justin, his now ex. I feel like it's got an oldschool QAF playfulness to it that I really appreciate, cause it seems kinda fed up in a way. The first time I heard that I remember laughing, and I still do, but also feeling torn because poor Brian.

OMG! I LOVE the music placement. It was so surreal. There are a bunch of scenes like that, where the music sounds sweet, but the scene is devastating. Poor Brian...although he made his own bed
I'm not sure if anyone has seen it, but there is a scene in a movie called Face/Off...well, I'll just play it. I remember actually crying during it, imagining being a kid and being there. __________________

That song choice is a symbol of the epiphany that struck Brian as he begin to walk in the opposite direction. The song is basically screaming out his feelings as Justin walks away, too, and he's definitely having a moment. Earlier in the scene, when Brian asked Justin if he's all right, there was so much longing in his eyes, but as always, his pride prevented him from REALLY expressing himself, so this song broadcasts everything he felt in that moment.
The music placements (the original music) is almost always spot-on in bringing home a certain message about what's happening in a scene. The music of this show will always be amazing. __________________

I adore that awkward run-in between them. It's so well done and so accurately captures the feelings and experience of running into an ex in real life. And Brian had never BEEN an "ex" before, so it's so adorable and heartbreaking to see him struggling to behave in that role for the first time.
The love is so clearly still there on both sides, it's painted across both of their faces. They can't just be grumpy, not-speaking exes. They can barely part from an awkward run-in without lingering and checking up on each other. That music choice was just genius. Renewed some of my faith in the series that used to be chock-a-block FULL of genius music cues, but lost something in the last two seasons. __________________
