That's right, funny.

It's a pity they couldn't have kept the narrative about the four leads all the way through the story instead of side-lining Cole and Alison as the series went on. Maybe then Ruth and Josh would have stayed.

Sarah had other ideas, unfortunately.

And it was more than that. According to the article, Ruth agreed to be in season 4, as long as Sarah Treem wasn't there. And Reiner showing Lena Dunham a nude pic of Maura Tierney and asked her to persuade Ruth to do nude scenes? Sick.

I always wondered why Reiner left after Season 3. And apparently Sarah lets this all happen.

And Sarah originally wanted Alison to be brutally raped then murdered by Ben....no words.

Even in the articles it's a bit of he said she said. I know from other interviews with Ruth that she wasn't comfortable with the nude scenes and explicit sex acts the way they were depicted, which probably built up her resentment as the show went on.

Crazy that Sarah wasn't on set during any of Ruth's S4 scenes per Ruth's wishes. Ruth had several scenes with Josh in S4, so of course Josh had to know what was going on.

I wonder if that played a factor in Josh not wanting to return for S5 either. I think a part of him was supporting Ruth.

I felt very early on by some of Ruth's comments during her stint in The Affair that she didn't like the fact that the men didn't show as much as the women in regards to nudity, so that was an issue very early on. The unfortunate thing when comparing the two is that there is more to expose on a woman than on a man, so it's a tricky situation by comparison. It is possible that ST had some issues with Ruth's outward dislike for the whole thing given that it was likely a stipulation to getting the role.

We are only hearing one side at this point, so I don't know that I want to form an actual opinion except that if Josh left in part because it was a show of support for Ruth, then I applaud that.

This whole thing puts Josh and Ruth's 8 hour lunch/drinks day a little in perspective because I bet that had something to do with this whole matter.

And that was the day (the day Josh and Ruth had their wine fest) of the table read for Season 3.

Josh and Ruth wanted to leave after Season 3 (remember Josh's Instagram post), but Ruth was persuaded to return on the condition that they film all her scenes first and Sarah Treem could not be present, and Josh was persuaded to return when he was presented with his arc for Season 4.

The Hollywood Reporter is a trusted industry trade publication, not a rag mag or "blind item" site, so there's that.

I guess we will never really know the whole story.
