Abrams Confirms Star Trek's Comic-Con No-Show

If it is all an elaborate ruse to disguise a surprise unveiling of the upcoming Star Trek movie, J.J. Abrams is being really blatant about it. While discussing his upcoming Fox series, Fringe, with reporters in-person and on-line, Abrams confirmed that there will be no Star Trek panel or sneak peek footage at San Diego's Comic-Con.

Abrams On 'Star Trek XI' Performances

Abrams is very satisfied with what he saw when watching the work that had been assembled thus far. "Right now we have a cut of the movie that has twelve percent of the visual effects near done but the movie is working and that's the thing that is exciting to me. What's amazing about the movie is that the people are awesome and the characters are alive and they're great and you love them. And Alex [Kurtzman] and Bob [Orci] wrote an amazing script and our amazing actors made it more amazing."

The performances of both Quinto and Pine shone through when Abrams could see them in their entirety. "It was really like...the fun of watching Zachary Quinto take a role like Spock which is an incredibly, deceptively, complicated part. When you see the whole performance there are things that he was doing that I didn't even see or realize or that he was doing when we were making the movie. To have Chris Pine come in and embrace this role of Kirk in a way that is so complete and emotional and funny and cocky and yet vulnerable, it's a wonderful thing, so that to me is where the best news is, that without the stuff that you think 'you need that to tell the story,' it works. It is really a testament to the people in the movie and the script."

It has one of the most passionate, entrenched fan bases in the history of media. The truth is, over the last several years, Star Trek was run into the ground and the franchise was nearly destroyed by the films and the television series that were not being guided by a good hand.

J.J. Abrams is a pretty good filmmaker. Cloverfield and the first season of Lost were great. So you have this guy who's really creative and has a pretty good track record of making science-fiction related programs and you put him in the right seat and say, "Now fly this franchise and recreate it." The pressure that he must be under to deliver something magnificent, and the amount of studio interference must be enduring, has got to be nearly indescribable. So I have a lot of sympathy and understanding based on those things.

Was totally excited when I saw them. OMG! Spock!! I was a bit sceptical at first, but now that these pics are out, so cant wait!

...did I mention Zachary is perfect for Spock?

Maybe now I can make some ST stuff again.

Yes, Spock conveyed a lot with the arch of an eyebrow. I hope Quinto can pull it off as well as Nimoy did.

It's so nice to finally get a glimpse of the actors in character.

I was never all that taken with Kirk. Spock always did it for me. But Pine seems to be quite able to pull it off, visually. Now he just needs the I Am Made Of Awesome aspect.

good description of James T Kirk.

From the expression on his face in that shot, I think Chris Pine can be persuading as Kirk. Quinto certainly looks convincing. It's rather hard to judge from one photo though.

To me, she has a totally different look than Nichelle Nicols, but I think I'll get used to her. The heavy eyeliner looks 60ish.
