I don't read fan fic unless it's recommended by someone I trust. There are some good writers around, who can capture the characters and have an interesting story to tell, but they seem to be few and far between.

I rented a bunch of DVDs for the long Thanksgiving Day weekend and one of them was Away From Her about a man and his Alzheimer's afflicted wife. I usually try to skip all the advertisements, etc., at the beginning of DVDs but I was in the kitchen doing something and just let it run. Any way, the first thing that popped up was a longish PSA kind of thing with a bunch of actors and other celebrities talking about Alzheimer's disease. One of the people featured was Kate Mulgrew.

That was a lot of words for such a small bit of information.

It's good that celebrities do those public service announcements.

Just the PSA. I saw her image part way through and paid more attention to what was happening but didn't hear her say anything. Either it was near the beginning or her spoken part was cut.

I wonder if it is a personal cause for Kate. She may have had a family member affected.

Could well be. There are so many worthwhile charities around, it's impossible to support them all. I know I choose to help those that have hit close to home

Due to her theatre schedule in New York, Mulgrew will be unable to attend the Alzheimer's Memory Walk in Dubuque, Iowa, which she is honorary chairperson for, on Saturday, September 22. However, she urges Voyager supporters to attend and/or contribute. "It would mean a great deal to me," she says in a message posted on Totally Kate.

hmm ... definitely sounds like she has more than a casual interest in raising money for Alzheimer's. It's really heartbreaking to watch that disease progress on somebody you love.

My maternal grandfather suffered from Alzheimer's so my parents moved in with him for awhile to take care of him. It put a lot of extra stress on my father who had already suffered one heart attack only a year or two earlier and they ended up having to move him into a nursing home.

All imdb.com says is that Kate is an avid fighter against the disease. Odds are someone she knows has/had the disease.

BTW - the episode of Law & Order: SVU she did is supposed to air tonight, Tuesday, December 4th at 8:00 pm EST and again at 12:03 am on Wednesday.
