The great thing about the S3 finale was the clarity that Lucas really does love Brooke and wasn't just with her as a convenience pairing until Peyton was free. The fact that season 4 tries to sway it that way is really disgusting, I mean Peyton was free in season 2 and he still went after Brooke.

Even with all the angst in the finale, it was clear that Lucas & Brooke really loved each other, they just had some things they needed to work out in their relationship
  S4 was almost like an alternate universe... __________________

Season 4 is what happens when you get the writers in the wrong headspace and using an actors' divorce as some lame excuse to re-push an old plot device back into the picture.
I really cannot get over how bad that whole season was. I re-watch bits of it on television re-runs sometimes and the new cast are awful (that Chase actor was so bland with Sophia I'm sorry it must be said  ), the whole Lucas and Peyton thing was a disgrace to the memory of Bryan Greenberg in this show... I mean did Schwahn fall out with him or something? Because it spits in the face of what Peyton shared with Jake.And of course it makes the trust Brooke had in Peyton when they reunited in late season 1 completely meaningless. __________________

Weren't a lot of the writers changed between s3 & s4? Also, I think that's when the network became the CW, so that explains some of the drop in quality...
