I don't see in any way that Snape would be friends with the Marauders. Though it would've been nice if both of them fought to keep their friendship. But I guess it was meant to be that they weren't gonna end up longtime friends because of how the Marauders treated Snape and how Snape eventually joined the Death Eaters.

And they were friends since they were kids. Lily's sister, Petunia, didn't like Snape. But Lily stood her ground with Petunia with regards to Snape. It all came crashing down when they were Hogwarts students and Lily met the Marauders.

Yes it's also in the book. Petunia was never fond of Snape and I think she's just jealous because he was doing magic with Lily and she's a muggle and therefore can't do magic. Petunia wasn't also accepted into Hogwarts.

She was always envious of Lily because their parents supported Lily's ambitions more than hers.

This explains why the Dursley's never treated Harry any better and it was mostly because of Petunia:

The truth is, Petunia holds a grudge against her sister because she's jealous. She actually wanted to be a witch at one point, which is proven when the Pensieve reveals that Petunia wrote to him asking if she could attend Hogwarts. He kindly responds that Petunia can't attend without magical abilities, which simply devastated her. To deal with the rejection, she began hating anything that resembles magic... including Lily.

And one would think they'd have more pity or be kind to Harry now that he's lost his parents but yeah...that wasn't gonna happen. They were abusive and Harry shouldn't even be allowed to stay with them if they lock him up most of the time.

Harry should've stayed with the Weasleys instead but the Dursleys will just report him missing so he can't do that.
