Dobby's introduction, if I recall, was much needed in CoS. I remember JKR saying that Dobby has to be in the movies because he has a significant role in the last few books (same with Kreacher, he has to be in the movie). I can't recall if she said this prior to OotP or HBP.

I'm really happy with the way the movies used Dobby in COS and DH. What he added to the story and how he helped Harry was really important.

That's true. Who would've thought an elf would have a great storyline in the latter part of the books?

Very well said, Catia. That's true for me reading the books. There are some characters that I disliked but ended up liking in the end (case in point, Dobby) and there are those that I loved and loved even more by the end.

Yeah I loved that. He may not have necessarily had a big part but what he did have was significant.

I wouldn't have thought he'd do that - save Harry. Maybe he felt like he owes him for saving him too but Dobby died for Harry which is really remarkable for an elf.

Yea, and Dobby always took risks to help Harry. I didn't like Dobby at first either, but I ended up for loving him, and he died a hero.
It's funny that Dobby was the one character that JKR made sure we saw Harry saying goodbye to. Of all the characters who died on the 7th book, we only saw Dobby's funeral. And I liked how Harry wanted to do it with no magic. __________________

I know right. I love that we ended up liking and loving him in the end for the sacrifices he made. Earlier I found him irritable (as I'm not really fond of elves) but I did a 360 with how JKR wrote Dobby.

I actually always loved Dobby and it broke my heart when he died, but I'm glad that his death was not pointless and was handled in a respectful manner, with Harry saying goodbye ti him properly and with him having a funeral that took place in the books.

From the beginning I think Dobby always rose above elf stereotypes. When he first showed up in COS, he didn't owe Harry anything. But he still wanted to protect him because he knew right from wrong.
I thought it was so sweet Harry wanted to give Dobby a burial without magic. Since he wasn't always part of the magical world, he'd see the sentiment in doing the work all on his own. Dobby must have meant a lot to him for him to go that extra mile. __________________

That was really very nice of Harry. That entire scene was emotional too. Like I said, reading it in the book I was sad but I really cried when I saw it in the movie.
