Diane Kruger
She studied ballet in London, was a top model in Germany, and began her acting career in France. But what really gives this 25-year-old the edge over the hordes of Hollywood hopefuls can be summed up in one word: "Helen" - as in "of Troy." Kruger trumped 2,000 other actresses to grab the pivotal role in this summer's swords-and-sandals epic "Troy" (alongside Brad Pitt and Peter O'Toole, no less). She'll follow it up with the romantic comedy "Wicker Park," opposite Josh Hartnett. Looks like her third career's the charm

Sin City offical cast news from Yahoo!

Release Date: TBA 2005 (wide)

MPAA Rating Note: (4/7/04) If this movie is faithful to Frank Miller's graphic novels, this movie will surely receive a "hard" R rating for excessive graphic violence and nudity.

Distributor: Dimension Films

Cast: Mickey Rourke (Marv), Bruce Willis (Hartigan), Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Maria Bello, Kate Bosworth, Steve Buscemi, Benicio del Toro, Michael Douglas, Carla Gugino (Lucille), Josh Hartnett, Jaime King (Goldie), Brittany Murphy (Shellie), Marley Shelton, Christopher Walken, Elijah Wood; other cast not announced yet.

Director: Robert Rodriguez ( )

Screenwriter: Robert Rodriguez ( ) and Frank Miller

Based Upon: (4/7/04) This movie is based upon the "Sin City" graphic novels by Frank Miller. In particular, the three stories that are being adapted are the original "Sin City," "The Babe Wore Red," and "Those Yellow Bastards."

Premise: Sin City is a violent city where the police department is as corrupt as the streets are deadly. In this movie, we follow three stories, the central of which is Marv, a tough-as-nails and nearly impossible to kill street fighter who goes on a rampage of vengeance when a beautiful woman, Goldie (King), he sleeps with for only one night is killed while lying in bed with him.

Filming: Production started on April 5th, 2004 in Austin, Texas. The production got its start when Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller shot the first scene of the movie, featuring Marley Shelton and Josh Hartnett, as a test to prove that they could capture (something like) the look of Miller's art on film.

Genre: Action, Based on a Book, Crime, Eye Candy

Greg's Preview Thoughts:
Sort: By Most Recent | Chronologically

4/06/04 - In the early 1990s, when most of the rest of the comic book industry was going in a muscle-bound, lowest-common-denominator direction that is now commonly derided by fans who felt stifled by what they perceived as a lack of originality, acclaimed writer/artist Frank Miller had long since abandoned the mainstream to focus on taking his artistic style in a new direction. With the first "Sin City" stories in 1993, Frank Miller abandoned all colors but stark black and white, creating images of super-stylized film action and suspense that were heavily influenced by the blackest (both visually and thematically) of film noir movies, as well as traditional engraving arts. To fans, "Sin City" was the masterwork that Miller had obviously been working toward his whole career... by stripping out all the fat, he accomplished a gripping visual style that seemed like it was from another century, it was so daring. Each panel could hang in an art gallery, the book was so well crafted. "Sin City" ultimately proved very influential, with Mike Mignola's Hellboy arguably being heavily influenced by Miller's artistic innovations.

Now, not only is Robert Rodriguez making a movie based on "Sin City," but he is doing in tandem with Frank Miller himself, who is sharing the directorial duties, in what one has to imagine is a cinematic attempt to replicate the starkness and imagination of Miller's art. If they can pull it off, we might be in for a movie like none we have ever seen before. Hollywood's stars are apparently impressed by what they've been shown, because this movie has enough for four movies. Here's hoping we get a glimpse of what live-action "Sin City" looks like soon.

DAHLIA TO FILM IN ROME

According to an article at the Italian news site Ansa, Brian De Palma has been in Rome this past week visiting with Tarak Ben Ammar, the producer of Femme Fatale, as well as of the upcoming Toyer. Ben Ammar told the newspaper that De Palma's The Black Dahlia will film at the producer/financier's recently aquired Roma Studios in Rome this August. Previous reports had the film beginning a May-or-June shoot in Los Angeles, which is possibly still the case-- the Roma dates could simply be for additional interior scenes. De Palma will next be traveling to Berlin

ELLROY TALKS BLACK DAHLIA
SAYS THEY HOPE TO BRING IT TO CANNES, 2005
James Ellroy, author of The Black Dahlia, has been popping up on French television this past week, promoting his novel Destination Morgue. As reported last week, the author appeared on ARTE, mentioning that Brian De Palma's adaptation of The Black Dahlia should begin shooting in June. On April 11, Ellroy appeared on French TV's France 5 channel, and said, "We hope to bring the film to Cannes in 2005." Some have been criticizing the casting of the project so far, fearing that Ellroy's novel is being too Hollywoodized, and getting away from its substance. But it sounds more and more like Ellroy is keeping himself involved in the project, which must be a good sign for such naysayers.

EVA GREEN IN DAHLIA?
ALONG WITH FIONA SHAW...
It is looking as though Eva Green will be the choice to play Madeleine in Brian De Palma's upcoming The Black Dahlia. According to the website of Quality International, a company that controls international productions with an aim toward increasing European and German creative participation within international films, the cast for one of those films, The Black Dahlia, includes Josh Hartnett, Mark Wahlberg, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Green, and Fiona Shaw. Some have speculated that Shaw may be playing Madeleine's mother. Green, who has been getting much attention of late for her part in Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers, has completed filming on Arsene Lupin, which was cowritten by Laurent Vachaud, co-author of the French-language Brian De Palma interview book from two years ago. That film also stars Kristin Scott Thomas. Green is currently filming Ridley Scott's Kingdom Of Heaven. Shaw, often compared to Vanessa Redgrave, can be seen in the latest installments of the Harry Potter series.

MORE SINNED AGAINST

Gutterati Nate Southand emails me with a "Sin City" location report from the upcoming Rodriguez/Millar movie.

"A friend of mine worked as an extra on 'Sin City' yesterday, and he had some exciting news.

"They were filming the strip club scene. Apparently, this will be the most faithful adaptation of a comic in history, because their shooting script was xeroxed copies of Sin City. They line up the camera to look like the panel, and they shoot.

"They're filming 'Sin City, That Yellow Bastard' and 'The Big Fat Kill.' The stories will be cut together 'Pulp Fiction' style. An intro starring Josh Hartnett is from 'Booze, Broads, and Bullets.'

"Mickey Rourke as Marv. They used prosthetics to make him true to the comic: square jaw, flat nose, everything.

"Nancy hasn't been cast yet. They used a stand in.

"Frank Miller is on set."

Here's something posted on the IMDB message board, stuff about Josh's character we already knew and others...

"DWIGHT McCARTHY (Josh Hartnett) - A former photographer who was in love with a woman named Ava before she left him for the multi-millionaire named Damien Lord and caused him to commit a murder. Although he is capable of murder, Dwight tries to keep people from hurting each other. Sometimes though, the only way to protect your friends is to kill your enemies."

"SHELLIE (Brittany Murphy) – A waitress at Kadie's. She’s a close friend of Dwight’s and from time to time they hook up."

"KEVIN (Elijah Wood) – A total sociopath and mute, Kevin kills (and eats) women, and leaves their heads mounted on the wall of a cell at the Farm."

Here's the transcript pertinent to Josh:

Host…Star mentioned before you have 4 movies coming out, not just with Denzel. But one with Josh Hartnett, one with Johnny Depp….

RM: …Yeah, no it’s great working with those guys and I got to kiss a few of them too, which was exciting….

Host…Do you have to pinch yourself constantly?...

RM: I mean it is very exciting, but I mean both actors, what’s really great about working with them is that they’re incredible actors. They really are. So, you know, it’s great to be in the same scene.

Host…Absolutely.

More Info on Sin City

The leads for the stories are Mickey Rourke as "Marv" in the first segment followed by Josh Hartnett as "Dwight" in the second with Bruce Willis as "Hartigan" in the third segment. These leads, along with other characters, will be making cameos in the other segments.

At this time, Robert Rodriguez is planning to shoot this entirely in black & white with spot color here and there (see That Yellow Bastard and The Babe Wore Red among others for examples), similar to the comic. He also plans to share directorial duties with Frank Miller and Quentin Tarantino. Due to the aforementioned subject matter, look for this movie to have an "R" rating.

FERRETTI HAS DESIGNS ON DAHLIA
FILM TO BE SHOT AT CINECITTA & ROMA THIS SUMMER

Legendary Italian production designer Dante Ferretti, fresh off of his sixth collaboration with Martin Scorsese (The Aviator), will be bringing his "built-from-scratch" visions of 1940s Los Angeles to the sets of Brian De Palma's The Black Dahlia. According to Screen Daily, the film will mark "the first ever collaboration between Italy's two biggest studios," Cinecitta Studios and Roma Studios. The latter was recently aquired and restored by Tarak Ben Ammar, who mentioned earlier this month that Dahlia would shoot there. The article states, "It is expected that De Palma will shoot interiors at Cinecitta and will use Roma Studios' huge backlot to shoot exteriors."
At Cinecitta Studios, Ferretti virtually recreated 19th century Manhattan for Scorsese's Gangs Of New York to much acclaim in 2002 (go to CHUD to read a fun interview with Ferretti). More and more, Ferretti's name is associated with high quality pictures that get Academy heads turning at Oscar time. His presence on the project is another indication, along with the high-profile collaboration between the two Italian studios, that De Palma is going for something grand with The Black Dahlia. Perhaps the first indication of this, other than the presence of Art Linson as producer, was when author James Ellroy mentioned a few weeks ago that they were hoping to bring the film to Cannes in 2005.

The Screen Daily article also mentions Eva Green as part of the cast of the film. As posted earlier this month, a Web site owned by Jan Fantl, who claims to be a co-producer of The Black Dahlia, lists Eva Green and Fiona Shaw as members of the cast, along with Josh Hartnett, Mark Wahlberg, and Scarlett Johansson. De Palma was unavailable for comment, so I have not been able to confirm either Green or Shaw

Hey! I dont know who, but at the start of this thread someone said that the only reason they watched 'The Faculty' is because of Josh's hair and his pants, and I have to agree. He looked so good in that movie, and when they had the camera on his backside (LOL) for like 10 seconds i nearly died. Heaven.
Overall I LOVE JH in Pearl Harbor. What can I say im a hopeless romantic and I just loved the story. It was sweet and Aw. LOL

Owen, Del Toro lured into 'Sin City'

Robert Rodriguez (news) has closed his cast on "Sin City" by adding Benicio Del Toro (news) and Clive Owen (news) to the Dimension Films ensemble pic.

Rodriguez wrote the script and is co-directing the screen version of the graphic novel series with its creator Frank Miller.

The noir drama is divided into three chapters named for titles in the Miller series: "Sin City," "That Yellow Bastard" and "The Big Fat Kill."

Del Toro and Owen will be seen in the last segment, along with Brittany Murphy (news).

Rodriguez still hopes to draft Quentin Tarantino (news) to direct at least part of that segment, once the "Kill Bill" helmer returns from presiding over the Cannes Film Festival (news - web sites) jury. Pic is shooting in Austin, Texas.

Despite persistent rumors, neither Leonardo DiCaprio (news) nor Johnny Depp (news) committed to "Sin." Still, Rodriguez cajoled quite a few name performers to take part, including Bruce Willis (news), Josh Hartnett (news), Mickey Rourke (news), Nick Stahl (news), Jessica Alba (news), Elijah Wood (news), Carla Gugino (news), Jaime King and Marley Shelton (news).

Dimension co-chairman Bob Weinstein and co-prexys Brad Weston and Andrew Rona are supervising production, and Rodriguez is producing with Elizabeth Avellan through their Troublemaker Studios label.
