You're right It was a good season for Jon because it was like he finally had a turning point with everything that happened to him... everybody was expecting him to actually get pissed off and do something other than following orders (or the Nights Watch)

For me it started (Jon's character development) when he opted to kill Olly. He could have just spared his life and let him go but he didn't.
