Sorry, missed this earlier, Sam. We don't always follow them but the most common ones are that on the 24th no food is eaten until the first star is seen on the sky, sharing the so called opłatek (Christmas wafer) with others wishing each other health, prosperity and so on, putting hay underneath the table cloth to symbolize the birth of Jesus since he was born among animals, having 12 dishes on the table to represent the 12 Apostles, leaving one empty place at the table in case somebody shows up in the need of shelter.

When I was little I always waited for a stranger to come to our door but that never happened and I was disappointed.

Oh and there is also this belief that if you give animals the above mentioned opłatek they are going to speak at midnight. I was really disappointed when my dog didn't speak, I was 8 and didn't really believe this was actually possible but part of me was: What if!

I would seriously struggle to follow that at all
