Tons of women manage to be mothers while also being incredibly successful doctors, lawyers, judges, Senators, engineers, teachers, professors, writers, astronauts, producers, biochemists, architects, etc. Being a mother isn't the determining factor.

Historically, not all of those jobs have been available to mothers (or women in general) so it's important to push forth the message that women aren't limited in what they can do because a lot of women in the past have fought really hard to get us to this point.

Shonda clearly knew Mer would be great professionally even after being a mom. But she does this thing where she likes to play devil’s advocate. She’s also done it w/ April’s christianity vs. medical science.
